  1. Re:Woot! on US Responsible For the Majority of Cyber Attacks · · Score: 2, Interesting

According to Akamai's quarterly "State of the Internet" report, Japan and the U.S. account for "over 50% of observed [attack] traffic in total."

You can see the executive summary and download the report here.

Full Disclosure: I work for Akamai.

Wow. I was looking around Los Angeles, wanting to see what Santa Monica looked like when I came across this ad blatantly hanging in the air. Incredible. That's reason alone to stick with Google Earth.

  3. Re:Can't we wait? on Windows Media Player 11 Released · · Score: 1

You're correct in that Microsoft does not have a record label. However, they do work closely with the music and film industries to develop these DRM products. This news bolsters the movie and music industry's confidence in using Microsoft's DRM products, which in turn means those parties are going to be more likely to use the technology in an attempt to protect their rights.

Does it provide a tighter grip on Windows users? No. But it does help the weakening grip Microsoft has had on protection of artistic content.

  4. For Those Who Don't Understand on Blizzard, Square/Enix Ban Yet More Farmers · · Score: 2, Informative
I had to do some research on just what "gold farming" even meant. From Wikipedia:
A farmer is a general term for a person who acquires in-game currency in a MMORPG through collecting items and money that can be obtained by continually defeating enemies within the game. Farming is a popular method in which to obtain in-game currency within many MMORPGs. A gold farmer is a person who collects in-game currency for the purpose of selling it to other players for real world currency, such as the US dollar.

A broadcast organization, like the poster is working for, is most likely in a live environment and can't just Bittorrent to success. There are Peer to Peer streaming tools out there including Abacast and Red Swoosh who I work with on a daily basis that provide sound results for their customers.

Unfortunately, though, a CDN-style infrastructure is still the optimal way to go. There are generally resellers of the CDN technologies that can give you reduced rates on the same service. I know our particular model allows for easy scalability with tools that allow you to control your bandwidth usage. </pitch type="shameless">

Didn't the film "Pitch Black" deal with a planet that had three suns?

  7. False Advertising on Tatooine-like Planet Discovered · · Score: 5, Insightful

"Tatooine-like Planet Discovered," I read. Eagerly, I clicked the link. "They've found a way to tell just what the planet is like! Now that is news!"

Oh, but wait... It's actually a story about a planet that was discovered in a solar system with three stars. What in the hell does that have to do with making the planet "Tatooine-like"? That's like calling every other planet in our system "Earth-like".

    *sigh*

  8. Oxygen and Memories on What's Your Earliest Memory? · · Score: 1

My earliest memory is from around 1 to 1 1/2 years old. Say what you will about it, but I have them. And they're not repeating things that people said. "Do you remember...?" was not something we did. In fact, I did that to my parents. Growing up in the Army, we moved a great deal. I once described a room I had a memory of to my parents. My parents were shocked because I was describing a room from a house that we moved from before I was 2.

The oxygen part intrigues me because when I was born, there were complications. I was put on a very pure oxygen immediately following my birth. I'm curious if there's a relation. Anyone know anything else about this?

The military actually has laptops manufactured by Panasonic that take a LOT of abuse. NPR had a story about it on Morning Edition. The reporter took the laptop and gave it to three kids under the age of 10 who beat the living snot out of it. This included driving over it, pouring ketchup and water on the keyboard, slamming it against a tree and just about any other abuse that might happen. According the story, the thing will take a bullet and still work.
