World Trade Towers and Pentagon Attacked
The World Trade Towers in new york were crashed into by 2 planes, one on each tower, 18 minutes apart. Nobody really knows who did it, but the planes were big ones. Normally I wouldn't consider posting this on Slashdot, but I'm making an exception this time because I can't get news through any of the conventional websites, and I assume I'm not alone. Update We're having server problems. Sorry. Updated info, both towers havecollapsed, pentagon hit by 3rd plane. Part of it has collapsed.

NEW YORK (CNN) -- What appeared to be two passenger planes crashed into the World Trade Center towers in Manhattan on Tuesday, leaving both towers in flames.
About 18 minutes after the first plane hit the northern tower, a second plane slammed into the southern tower, erupting into a huge fireball. The harrowing images were caught in live video.
Live pictures showed a gaping hole on the side of the northern building, several stories down from the top. Black smoke was billowing from at least two sides.
The second crash hit the second tower several stories lower than the first in a huge burst of flame.
Sean Murtagh, a CNN vice president, was in an office near the World Trade Center towers at the time of the first crash. He witnessed the crash.
"It was a jet, looked like a two-engine jet," Murtagh said. "It looked like maybe a 737."
Murtagh said he saw the plane "teetering back and forth, wingtip to wingtip" before the plane smashed into the side of the building.
Jeanne Yurman witnessed the explosion that followed the crash.
"At first it was like leaflets," she said, describing the debris that fell to the ground. "There was tons of debris and it continues to fall out."
Yurman said she did not see the plane.

MSNBC has been saying that the FBI thinks one or both of the planes were hijacked.
Ok this is what I know:
8:55 one Plane or missile hits tower
9:05 secone 727 Passanger plane hits tower
Eye witnessess are pretty sure the first one was a plane, but some believe they saw a missile.
2nd crash caught on tape because news crews came to cover 1st crash.
Not sure if it is navigational error or deliberate attacks.
All I know, and could be erronous - everything is the first hour into an event like this

Well, take it for what it is worth, but the Today Show is claiming that both planes were hijacked. Like Taco said, the only size of the planes being reported is 'big'. But if they really were hijacked, that usually implies they were pretty good sized planes.

I was going over the Williamsburg bridge this morning...at that time, I saw that the first tower was on fire. I saw the clock at the Essex/Delancey station, it was about 3 of 9.
When I got to work in DUMBO, I saw that the other tower was on fire.
This is insanity.

I just came home from school and sa the whole thing live on the tv. They where broadcasting live as the second plane hit. It seems as if there where reports about a hijacking just before the planes hit. This is bad :/
In Europe people seem to think that it is a terrorist attack (certainly the hijacking reports suggest that it is).
When I saw the video of the second plane crashing, the first thing that I thought of was one of Tom Clancy's books in which a 747 was crashed into the US Capital Building. I always wondered why someone didn't so something like that. Now, unfortulatly, someone has.

New York, Sept. 11 -- Two aircraft slammed into the World Trade Center in New York on Tuesday, in what was immediately speculated to be a terrorist attack. The FBI reported that a hijacking might have taken place just before the crashes. Police and ambulances were rushing to the scene.
THE AIRCRAFT struck about a half hour apart, starting fires and sending smoke billowing out of the skyscrapers. The first crash happened shortly before 9 a.m. ET.
"You could hear a jet overhead and it seemed to be low," eyewitness Mary Cozza told WNBC TV, describing the aircraft as a small jet plane.
Another bystander described a barrage of debris raining down on the sidewalk below.

About 9 a.m., a second aircraft was seen crashing into the other tower. Broadcast cameras already watching the scene filmed the second plane ram the tower.
Large holes were visible in sides of the 110-story buildings. The tops of the twin towers were obscured by the smoke.
Thousands of pieces of what appeared to be office paper came drifting over Brooklyn, about three miles from the tower, one witness said.
Terrorism was speculated given that the center was bombed on Feb. 26, 1993, killing six people and injured more than 1,000 others.

I was watching CNN as I got ready for work when the the planes piled in - saw the second one happen live. I'm sure the news folks will have some better info out there shortly, but it looked like a 737 to me. Grey paint, so maybee Continental. It hit fast and they were too busy to show a re-run of the impact.
Man, I was just in that plaza last week. Tons of people on the street in that area. My heart goes out to those people.

i used to work at a company in the world trade center, in the tower that was bombed in 1993. everybody used to remember the bombing in the back of their minds, but security was pretty tight everyday. however, there were hundreds of thousands of people who commute to the financial district everyday and the place is ripe for terrorism.
that said, i hope everyone is ok. the two towers make a great target for anyone. i didn't work that high up, but i can't imagine walking the stairs. they're plain concrete stairs without windows or anything. in a time of panic like this, it would be easy to get hurt simply trying to evacuate.

The second plane was shown crashing in. From the outline of the plane in the video, it was a Boeing 737 or 727. Midsized twin-engine jet, full of fuel.
Reports are confirmed of one hijacking; they are also sure that they were both planes.

I really don't see how this could be an accident. The rule is that any airplane accident is a combination of at least three different errors/factors.
However. Any urban area, especially one with such a dense traffic, is at all times under radar surveillance and Air Traffic Control. Unless a number of people simultaneously had their braincells commit mass suicide, this could (or should) not have happened.
I fear that this is the result of terrorism. And if the news say different, I'll be very skeptical. After all, if it were terrorism, what does this show to the US public? That they're vulnerable at any time. Not exactly a sentiment the Powers That Be would like to instill to their voters...
And one last thing. Whatever this turns out to be, and as much as people all over the world are glued to their PCs or TV sets for news, there's one thing to remember here. It's not 'exciting', it's not 'fun'. It's tragic. These were real, live people...and the news channels are having a field day.

Are David Letterman unhurt?
I saw one of the towers when I got off the PATH train this morning, a little after 9:00AM. All these people were crowding Greenwich St., staring up. I looked over, and there it was.
I didn't find out what happened until I walked up a few blocks; someone had their car radio turned on to a news station, and they were describing what had happened. There were a lot of people with cameras or video recorders taking pictures. Everyone looked shocked, some where crying. Many of them were on cell phones, but the circuits are pretty much jammed so it's not much use.
It's hard to really describe what it was like seeing the WTC smoking. Putting it into words would just diminish it.

A coworker passed on the following: The FBI has confirmed that 2 planes were hijacked this morning from LaGuardia Airport in NYC; presumably, these were the 2 that crashed into the World Trade Center. Source is WTOP, a Washington DC radio station. Apologies if this has already been submitted.

I was going in late today; i saw this article and called my office, which is about 3 blocks from WTC; I go through WTC on the way to work and would have been on the way through when this happens.
I'm watching CNN now; its fucking scary.
Our CEO told me he watched it, people were jumping out of the windows (unclear if he meant the plane or the building). I have friends and coworkers who work in the WTC and the WFC. Let's all pray for them and their families.

NEW YORK, Sept. 11 -- Two aircraft slammed into the World Trade Center in New York on Tuesday, in what was immediately speculated to be a terrorist attack. The FBI reported that a hijacking might have taken place just before the crashes. Police and ambulances were rushing to the scene.
THE AIRCRAFT struck about a half hour apart, starting fires and sending smoke billowing out of the skyscrapers. The first crash happened shortly before 9 a.m. ET.
MSNBC.com reporter Martin Wolk, who was inside one of the towers, said the lights flickered and then a loud bang was heard. People panicked and started to flee the building.
When they reached the lobby, smoke started to fill the building and people could see debris falling and many cars outside were damaged. "It was sheer pandemonium, people were screaming and crying, afraid to go outside because of the falling debris," Wolk said. "We looked up and it looked like the top 20 floors were in flames."
Another bystander described a barrage of debris raining down on the sidewalk below. About 9 a.m., a second aircraft was seen crashing into the other tower. Broadcast cameras already watching the scene filmed the second plane ram the tower.
Large holes were visible in sides of the 110-story buildings. The tops of the twin towers were obscured by the smoke.
Thousands of pieces of what appeared to be office paper came drifting over Brooklyn, about three miles from the tower, one witness said.
A video freeze shows a plane just before it hits the center some 18 minutes after the first crash.
Terrorism was speculated given that the center was bombed on Feb. 26, 1993, killing six people and injured more than 1,000 others.
The FBI said it was investigating reports of a hijacking. A United Airlines employee said he had heard reports that an American Airlines jet had been hijacked and was one of the two aircraft that flew into the center. It was not clear if there were passengers on board.
New York airports and the Lincoln Tunnel reportedly were closed as a precautionary measure.

Thick smoke is billowing around it, coming out of the central courtyard. Most of the offices in the area are leaving work early. Air traffic has been shut down, and air force jets are patrolling the skies now.

ABC News reported (complete with smoke-obscured footage from a distance) about 20 minutes ago that there had been an explosion in the ___ Wing (I must admit that I don't remember which) of the White House. There hasn't been a whisper about t his since their 5-minute-long coverage (quite lengthy, IMHO.)

Two planes have crashed into the World Trade Center in New York City while another - reportedly a Boeing airliner - has smashed into the Pentagon in Washington DC.
The White House, the Capitol and the Pentagon - the heart of the US military machine - are all reportedly being evacuated.
All flights within the US have been grounded.
An early report said six people had been killed in the World Trade Center attack while hundreds were injured. There are no details so far of casualties in Washington.

Briton James Winter, 30, living in an apartment close to the centre, said he was woken a huge bang at around 0800 local time.
"I was in bed and there was a huge explosion. The whole building rattled and shook," he said.
"I ran to the window and there was smoke billowing from the south side of one of the towers. Everyone in my building was panicking and running around."
About 40,000 people work inside the two-building centre, and more than 150,000 people enter the complex every day.
On 26 February, 1993, a terrorist bomb exploded in building number one's lower level.

According to CBS News, the plane which struck tower 1 was hijacked and coming from Boston. The plane which struck tower 2 had taken off from Newark; no word on whether it was hijacked or stolen. Tower 2 just collapsed 10 minutes ago after a 2nd explosion, damaging another building.

Two aircraft smashed into the twin towers of New York's World Trade Center at 9 am (1300 GMT) today. One tower has reportedly collapsed. Six people are reported to have been killed and over a thousand have been injured. Reports say all three were hijacked and one of them was an American Airlines aircraft. The Federal Aviation Administration has meanwhile shut down all aircraft takeoffs in the US. People are being evacuated from the Pentagon and the White House.
The Democratic Front for the Liberation of Palestine has taken responsibility for the crashes. US President George W Bush has said that the crashes were "an apparent terrorist attack on our country'' and that it was a "difficult moment for America''.
The first aircraft that crashed was a Boeing 737 and as people watched, another plane rammed into the second tower of the trade center 18 minutes later. The crashes by the two planes into each of the twin towers have raised concerns that terrorists may have launched an attack on the tallest buildings in the city. The New York airport is close to the towers and there are also rumours that the crash may have been caused due to a communication or navigation failure.
More than 40,000 people work at the World Trade Center. The downtown Manhattan complex comprises two buildings, with more than 400 firms from over 25 countries. More than 100,000 visitors come to New York's Twin Towers every day.
The New York Stock Exchange, located in lower Manhattan near the trade center where many financial offices are kept, has indefinitely suspended trading.

One of the Towers has actually collapsed and hundreds are now thought to be dead.

Also, eyewitness reports are claiming that one of the towers has completely collapsed as a result of the fire. I cannot confirm this, thought. Your best bet at this point would probably be TV because almost all of the news websites I've tried are completely dead.

I got through to the CNN articles by going through cnnfn.com - according to CNN the Pentagon has also been hit by a plane today, and the White House has been evacuated. Bush is currently in Florida but is supposed to return to DC today.

This tragedy (and, unfortunately, Major News Event) really illustrates how not-getting-it ALL of the websites of major national news providers are. Instead of concise, light website design with a few carefully encoded JPG files, we get bandwidth-heavy Shlockwave and ActiveX "multimedia experiences" that, in the even of an actual story, quickly brings the likes of MSNBC down to its knees. sorry if this is already posted, slashdot is working bad for me, but the state department in DC has just been allegedly carbombed, too. Things are not looking good.
Congress typically feels the need to respond after some high profile incident like this. There is no way at this time to know what accually happened, or how to prevent this. (Much less how to prevent this without trampeling your rights). Still congress wants to do something, so they appear to have the ebst attentions. Odds are this will be used to trample on your rights.

If it really was Palestinians, as much as I hate to say this.. I sort of understand..
before I start, I am a normal American white guy, am open minded, and think every race in the world has a right to their own safety and piece (including Americans).. I have absolutely nothing to do with the Arab israeli conflict (I am not arab, or Jewish, or anything like that), nor do I know any of either side closely at all..
But I was in Isreal once on business, and I saw what the Israelies do to the Palestinians, and what I saw made me sick to be an American because of how our government supports what the Israelis do to those people..
Basically, the isrealis take palestinian land bit by bit to make settlements for Israelis only, and shoot/run over/kill Palestinians with the guns, helicopters and bullets that we, America give the Israelis.
We dont report these travesties on American news (though you can get it on the BBC, CBC and other foreign outlets, and watch Israelis shoot with machine guns, 12 year old arab kids throwing rocks).
It is worse than south Africa, and I go as far to say, that the Israelis have put the Palestinians in concentration camp like conditions for the last 20 years or so, bulldozing their houses for their land, shooting their kids, controlling their land, their economy and choking them off one by one..
And when other countries like the Africans try to tell the truth (yes, the Israelis are racists..absolutely, they have dual licence plates for Palestine cars, dont let them drive on the same roads as Israelis, and occupy their country).
And we, the United states government, give more money, bombs, guns and weapons to Israel than to any other country in the world in foreign aid.., knowing (and allowing0 the Israelis to shoot, maim and rob more palestians of there property, lives and freedom.
And we have been doing that for 20 years now at least..

President Bush called the events a "national tragedy" as an emergency government crisis team rallied in Washington D.C.
Shortly after the planes crashed into the World Trade Center towers, the southern tower, 2 World Trade Center collapsed in what witnesses described as a demolition crew operation. At 10:30 a.m. ET, the northernmost tower, One World Trade Center, also collapsed.
There were no immediate details available on casualties, but thousands of people work in the buildings affected.
The West Wing of the White House and the Capitol have both been evacuated, and the Federal Aviation Administration issued an order that no plane was allowed to take off anywhere in the country. All military bases were put on Threatcon Alpha, the highest level of alert, after the attacks, which came without any warning.
At least one military fighter jet patrolled the skies above Manhattan this morning in the wake of the tragedy.
"Today we've had a national tragedy. Two airplanes have crashed into the World Trade Center in an apparent terrorist attack on this country," President Bush said.
Police in Washington blocked off a two-block perimeter around the White House.
Agents with automatic weapons, machine guns were trying to move tourists out of the area, locking down entire buildings around the White House.
Cell phones may have been deliberately turned off because of fear that cell phones could be used to detonate a bomb.
There were no immediate reports of how many were injured or the extent of damages at the twin towers, or at the Pentagon.
A government source requesting anonymity told ABCNEWS that the FBI was investigating reports of three plane hijackings. One of the flights was American Airlines flight 11, which departed from Boston's Logan International Airport at 8 a.m. bound or Los Angeles.
?It?s simply a jetliner, it?s extremely reliable flown by two [people], could have been three in the cockpit," ABC aviation expert John Nance said of the Boeing 767, the plane hijacked from Boston. "The door is flimsy anyone who wants to get through that door can get through that door.?

All New York City area airports were closed down shortly after the second WTC crash, and armed military aircraft imposed a no-fly zone around the city to prevent further attacks.
In Chicago, the Sears Tower was evacuated and the police department went on heightened alert.
"Usually the building is so full of activity, and now there's no one in the hallways. It's creepy," Cathy Grable, a 31-year-old interior designer, told the Associated Press.
Witnesses speaking in the moments after the first crash told WABC that the first plane seemed to try to avoid the northern tower, One World Trade Center, but could not, plowing into the top floors of the north side of the northernmost tower at about 8:48 a.m. ET.
As television camera crews filmed the billowing black smoke, a second plane, which appeared to be a Boeing 737, flew toward the towers from the west and crashed into the southern tower, 2 World Trade Center, about 20 to 25 floors from the top.
The witnesses described the first plane as a small twin-engine passenger jet. The witnesses said it appeared that most of the jet stuck inside the building.
"Papers were billowing down and it looked like the wing crashed down to the street causing a panic on the highway and cars hit each other. People were in a panic. Things look in better control now," a witness from the Dow Jones offices in the neighboring World Financial Center said.
There was no immediate word on injuries or fatalities in the twin disasters, which happened shortly before 9 a.m. and then right around 9 a.m.
Police, fire and emergency personnel were already on the scene attempting to deal with the first disaster when the second plane struck.
Jennifer Tammi, 33, a doctoral student taking an elevated subway train from her home in Brooklyn to Columbia University in upper Manhattan, was watching the smoke from the first explosion when she saw the second plane hit the other tower.
"I was looking at the smoke and saw a plane heading low over lower Manhattan," she said. "It banked and headed straight for the middle of the other tower. It looked like it flew right through the building."
Large holes were visible in sides of the 110-story buildings, landmark twin towers, which were struck by terrorist bombers in February 1993.
The tops of the twin towers were obscured by the smoke.
Thousands of pieces of what appeared to be office paper came drifting over Brooklyn, about three miles from the tower, one witness said.
Commodity trading in the New York Board of Trade (NYBOT) shut down after the crashes.
"They've evacuated the building," Mike McDougall, vice president of the Latin American desk at FIMAT USA Inc., told Reuters.
Brokers said business in NYBOT, which is located in the WTC complex and trades raw sugar, coffee, cocoa, cotton and orange juice, has been suspended.
The World Trade Center bombing on Feb. 26, 1993, left six people dead and injured more than 1,000 others.

While the US continues to base its foreign policies on domestic politics: - ie, because of the influence of the Zionist lobby & US politicians being shitscared of Jewish voyers voting as a block on a single issue, the US continues to support Israel (with more aid in any given year than the whole continent of South America); even though Israel's welfare is not really a relivent to the US's strategic interest; you can't really blame foreign interests if they decide to take things out on the American people.

While Israel refuses to permit the return of Palestinian refugees & refuses to return confiscated properties (before 1948 the Arabs owned about 90% of the land, after the mass expulsion & expropiations of 1948 they owned only 4%), Israel is in contravention of the Geneva Convention (A49P6), the Hague Convention (1906C), the IDHR & dozens of UN resolutions. I was going to post the same thing. This shows how incredibly foolish and shortsighted that it is of us to believe that this missle defense shield will do us any good. It has often been mentioned that anybody can get a suitcase-sized nuclear bomb into the country, but this shows that it doesn't even take that to entirely shut down the country.
Here we all are -- on Slashdot. I'm at home, and I bet that I won't go to work until late this afternoon. Most of the country is in similar shape. No missle defense shield could help this. In fact, I'm not sure that *anything* could help this. If half a dozen guys decide to hijack airplanes and crash them into major buildings, no defense shield or anything else will help.
All routes into NY are shutdown. Tried to take the train into work today and the engineers were kicking people off the train as they are not leaving New Jersey.
Apon getting back home I find out that both towers are now rubble! Cell phones are not functional in the New York/New Jersey area.

While the focus on the WTT is important does anyone have and information on the situation over at the pentagon? if as suspected a third aircraft detonated there is this a real world attempt to throw the government off it's internal network security? My dad, who flies A'A 757/767s, called to say that one of them was Flight 11 from Boston to LA (fortunately, he wasn't flying those highly unfortunate 757/767s). One thing that I'm wondering about is how in the world they got their weapons, assuming they had them, through security?

Iraq 'shoots down US plane'
Iraq claimed a similar "kill" last month
Iraq says it has shot down a US spy plane over the south of the country.
The official Iraqi News Agency (INA) said the plane was brought down near the port city of Basra.
(The spy plane) was used to provide the American enemy with information concerning our installations, vital sites and our air-defence formations

Maj. Brett Morris, spokesman for a US-British military task force in the Persian Gulf, told the Associated Press the coalition force had lost an unmanned aircraft on Tuesday similar to a US spy plane lost last month.
INA said the plane was shot down at 1130 local time (0730 GMT) and wreckage from the "highly advanced" plane was being collected.
The news agency quoted an unnamed Iraqi Air Defence Command official as saying: "The plane was coming from Kuwaiti territory and it was used to provide the American enemy with information concerning our installations, vital sites and our air-defence formations."
Second plane shot down
If confirmed, it will be the second US spy plane shot down in Iraq in the past two weeks.
Iraq said its forces shot down an unmanned Predator plane in the Basra area, 560 kilometres (350 miles) south of Baghdad on 27 August.
The US Defense Department acknowledged losing a plane at that time but did not confirm the circumstances.
The United States and Britain frequently fly sorties over no-fly zones over north and south Iraq, imposed after the Gulf War.
Iraq refuses to recognise the legitimacy of the zones and has stepped up efforts to shoot down allied planes over the past few months.

(KFWB) 9.11.01, 7:44a -- In what the federal government is considering a terrorist attack, a number of apparent terrorist attacks took place in Washington, D.C. and in New York.
Two planes crashed into the upper floors of both World Trade Center towers in New York this morning at 6am Pacific time. Black smoke is pouring out of gaping holes which were blown into the two towers from the impact and subsequent explosions.
One of the two towers at the World Trade Center collapsed about an hour after the attack. There were eyewitness reports of people jumping and falling out of the upper floors of the towers.
Meantime in Washington D.C., the White House and the Pentagon, Capitol Hill, and all other federal buildings have been evacuated and closed down. There are reports that an aircraft crashed on a helicopter landing pad near the Pentagon within an hour after the first attack in New York. There is also a fire at the State Department building.
The Federal Aviation Administration has shut down all aircraft takeoffs nationwide amid reports that at least one plane was hijacked for the attack.
Military planes are patrolling a no-fly zone above Manhattan, where there are orders to divert or shoot down any plane above downtown New York.
President George W. Bush said that the crashes were "an apparent terrorist attack on our country." The president has cleared his day's schedule and is heading back to Washington D.C. to meet with advisors. Bush says there will be a "full scale investigation to hunt down and find those folks who have committed this act."
In New York, two planes crashed about 18 minutes apart -- one crashed around the 80th floor of one tower, the other crashed at around the 60th floor of another tower.
The planes are described as jet airliners.
CNN and the AP are reporting that one of the planes may have been a hijacked American Airlines flight, a Boeing 767 jetliner, from Boston.
A large amount of dark smoke is billowing out of the remaining tower. Debris is falling out of the upper floors of the tower and onto the streets below.
There are major evacuations in the area. KFWB's Erin Kotecki reports that a friend in one of the towers told her by phone that the World Trade Center is being evacuated, and described the scene as "chaos."
"Flood of folks escaping downtown Manhattan," an eyewitness reports. Emergency crews are having trouble reaching the disaster area.
The New York stock exchange was evacuated and trading is not expected to take place. A number of financial businesses are located in the towers.

An aircraft about to fly into the World Trade Center in New York
America hit by terrorists
In a horrific sequence of destruction, terrorists crashed two aircraft into the World Trade Center and knocked down the twin 110-story towers this morning. Explosions have also reportedly rocked the US Defense Department and the State Department, spreading fear across the nation.
Another hijacked aircraft is on its way to Washington, DC. A fifth aircraft has also reportedly crashed just south of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
US fighter pilots are patrolling the skies over Washington.
President George W. Bush has ordered a full-scale investigation to "hunt down the folks who committed this act".
One of the planes that crashed into the Trade Center was American Airlines Flight 11, hijacked after take-off from Boston en route to Los Angeles, American Airlines said.
It is believed that another hijacked airplane is still on its way to Washington, DC.
The planes blasted fiery, gaping holes in the upper floors of the twin towers. The southern tower collapsed with a roar about an hour later.
"This is perhaps the most audacious terrorist attack that's ever taken place in the world," said Chris Yates, an aviation expert at Jane's Transport in London. "It takes a logistics operation from the terror group involved that is second to none. Only a very small handful of terror groups is on that list. ... I would name at the top of the list Osama bin Laden."
All airplanes were grounded across the country by the Federal Aviation Administration. All bridges and tunnels into Manhattan were closed down.
The twin disaster at the World Trade Center happened shortly before 9 a.m. (1300 GMT) and then right around 9 a.m.
Heavy black smoke billowed into the sky above the gaping holes in the side of the twin towers, one of New York City's most famous landmarks, and debris rained down upon the street, one of the city's busiest work areas. When the second plane hit, a fireball of flame and smoke erupted, leaving a huge hole in the glass and steel tower.
John Axisa, who was getting off a commuter train to the World Trade Center, said he saw "bodies falling out" of the building. He said he ran outside, and watched people jump out of the first building, and then there was a second explosion, and he felt heat on the back of neck.
Within the hour of the New York attacks, an aircraft crashed on a helicopter landing pad near the Pentagon and a car bomb exploded outside the State Department. The White House and all government buildings have been evacuated amid threats of terrorism.
"Today we've had a national tragedy," Mr Bush said in Florida. "Two airplanes have crashed into the World Trade Center in an apparent terrorist attack on our country." He said he would be returning immediately to Washington.
Terrorist bombers struck the World Trade Center in February 1993, killing six people and injuring more than 1,000 others.
The Democratic Front for the Liberation of Palestine (DFLP) was initially reported as claiming responsibility for the attacks. But a DFLP spokesman has denied these reports.
All flights in America have been grounded and flights are being diverted to Canada.
The London Stock Exchange and Canary Wharf have been evacuated.
Tony Blair, speaking at the TUC conference in Brighton, said: "I know that you would join with me in sending the deepest condolences to President Bush and the American people on behalf of the British people after these terrible events.
"This mass terrorism is the new evil in our world today it is perpetrated by fanatics. We, the democratic societies of the world are going to have to come together to fight it together."

Both the 1,360-ft towers have now collapsed. More than 50,000 people work in the complex.

Hijack
It is reported two United Airlines passenger planes were hijacked shortly before the first plane struck the Trade Centre in Manhattan.
One was thought to be a 737 capable of carrying more than 100 passengers. The other was confirmed as an American flight 11 from Boston to Los Angeles. A Boeing 767 can carry up to 269 people.
A third plane has slammed into the Pentagon just outside Washington DC parts of the complex collapsed after fire engulfed the building. Much of the complex is in flames.
Gaping hole
The first plane smashed into the top stories of one of the Trade Centre's towers, leaving two gaping holes in the side.
Minutes later another aircraft approached, turned in the air and crashed into the lower storeys of the second tower - the footage was seen live on TV stations around the world.
The second explosion engulfed several floors.
A person who answered the phone on the trading floor at interdealer-broker Cantor Fitzgerald, located near the top of the World Trade Center, said: "We're f***ing dying," then hung up. There was screaming and yelling in the background. A follow up call was not answered.
"This has got to be one of the most horrendous terrorist attacks perhaps ever perpetrated," terrorism expert Chris Yates told Sky News.
Flights grounded
At least 1,000 people have been reported injured. The 110-storey towers are in lower Manhattan.
All flights to the US have been diverted to Canada. All flights in the US have been grounded. Telephone lines to New York are all down.
President Bush was in Florida at the time of the attacks but is now returning to Washington.

There is also a photo of one of the towers missing part of its top, captioned "Flames and smoke erupt from the World Trade Center after a second plane crashes into the New York City landmark." Given one of the holes is 7 stories large, it looks like some 20-30 floors are missing from the other.

I'm on business in Pittsburgh, and CNN just reported another 767 crashing southeast of Pittsburgh in Somerset County. The city is on alert, and of course, all airplanes are grounded. I can't reach my family to let them know all is well with me because "all circuits are busy".

These people have not left Bush much of a choice. At this point, the only question is "Can the CIA/NSA track the attackers and supply enough data to nuke their leader?"
An attack this large is going to leave a ton of evidence to be analyzed. Getting away with a crime is inversely proportional to the number of people involved. The very size and nature of this attack eliminates most of the sane/reasonable world as suspects.
Having no reasonable options, Bush is not in a position to do anything other than hunt down the loonies and administer radiation therapy.
Perhaps Bush's real test will come in the form of unrelated international challenges, where the confusion of this attack is used a diversion. If China wanted to invade Taiwan, they won't get a better opportunity than this.

Also a carbomb has gone off just outside of the State Building in Washington D.C. All total, more then 50,000 people work within the twin tower / twin zip-coded towers of the World Trade center, the guesstimation of fatalities is immense. "Everyone was screaming, crying, running, cops, people, firefighters, everyone," said Mike Smith, a fire marshal from Queens, as he sat by the fountain outside the Supreme Court building, shortly after the second tower collapsed. "A couple of marshals just picked me up and dragged me down the street."
"It's like a war zone. There are many injured."
This was the horror unfolding in New York City in the wake of an apparent terrorist attack.
"I just saw the building I work in come down," said businessman Gabriel Ioan, shaking in shock outside City Hall a cloud of smoke and ash from the World Trade Center behind him. "I just saw the top of Trade Two come down."
Nearby a crowd mobbed a man on a pay-phone, screaming at him to get off the phone so that they could call relatives. Dust and dirt flew everywhere. Ash was 2 to 3 inches deep in places. People wandered dazed and terrified.
"People were jumping out of windows," said an unidentified crying woman. "I guess people were trying to save themselves. Oh my God!"
"I was in the World Financial Center looking out the window," said one woman. "I saw the first plane and then 15 minutes later saw the other plane just slam into the World Trade Center."
Another eyewitness, AP newsman Dunstan Prial, described a strange sucking sound from the Trade Center buildings after the first building collapsed.
"Windows shattered. People were screaming and diving for cover. People walked around like ghosts, covered in dirt, weeping and wandering dazed."
"It sounded like a jet or rocket," said Eddie Gonzalez, a postal worker at a post office on West Broadway. "I looked up and saw a huge explosion. I didn't see the impact. I just saw the explosion."
Morning commuters heading into Manhattan were stranded as the Lincoln Tunnel was shut down to incoming traffic. Many left their cars and stood on the ramp leading to the tunnel, staring in disbelief at the thick cloud of smoke pouring from the top of the two buildings.
On the streets of Manhattan, people stood in groups talking quietly or watching on television at ground-level network studios.
Joan Goldstein, communications project leader for The Associated Press, was on a bus from New Jersey at about 8:50 a.m. when she saw "smoke pouring out of the World Trade Center building. We said, 'Oh, my God! The World Trade Center's on fire!"
Perhaps 10 minutes later, "All of a sudden, there was an orange plume, a huge explosion. It shot out the back of the building. Everybody on the bus was just moaning and gasping," said Goldstein, who wept and trembled as she spoke.
The plume was from the second plane, but she didn't see the plane because of the thick smoke.
She tried to call friends who work there, but couldn't get through.
"It was the most horrible thing I've ever seen in my life," said Goldstein.

Qatar-based al-Jazeera television reports FBI sources say one of the two aircraft had been hijacked.
In another article they hint that a fourth plane was hijacked and heading towards Washington and jets have been scrambled to intercept the plane.

US President George W. Bush said on Tuesday that the full resources of the US would be used to "hunt down" the perpetrators of the World Trade Center and Pentagon attacks.
The immediate assumption was that a Middle Eastern group must be responsible for an attack of this magitude and complexity. Palestinian militants made an immediate claim of responsibility. The Democratic Front for the Liberation of Palestinian, a militant splinter group, issued a statement of responsibility to a TV station in Abu Dhabai.
Analysts said the claim should be treated with caution. The DFLP has no history of terrorist attacks outside Israel and the occupied territories. The group was founded in 1969 when it split from the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP) and opposes the Middle East peace process.
The group conducted numerous small bombings and minor assaults, and some more spectacular operations in Israel during the 1970s, concentrating on Israeli targets. Since 1988 it has been limited to border raids around Israel.
Phil Butterworth-Hayes, the civil aviation editor with the Janes information group, said that aircraft attacks such as those on the WTC were very difficult to stop.
"The whole civil aviation system works on trust. In America,security systems are the responsibility of the Federal Aviation Administration. The first thing the FAA are going to have to do is completely rethink some of the security systems they have in place at the moment," Mr Butterworth-Hayes said.
"Terrorists are always one step ahead of the institutions that really need protection. Once you defeat one aspect of terrorism, you have to battle against something else," he said.

If I remember correctly they say it was Cleveland to Chicago, which makes me wonder if Washington or NY was the target, since it was so off course.

I'm listening to National Public Radio. The host of Morning Edition, Bob Edwards, just interviewed Dr. Alice Cronin professor of Counter-Terrorism at Georgetown University. She said (I'm paraphrasing),

In Washington, a senior government official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the FBI suspects the events in New York and Washington were part of an organized terrorist campaign.
Each moment seemed to bring fresh evidence of that:
--A car bomb exploded outside the State Department, senior law enforcement officials said.
--A loud explosion was reported in the vicinity of the Capitol.
--The departments of Justice, State, Treasury and Defense were among those ordered evacuated, as were the Capitol and the White House. In a remarkable scene, security guards brandishing automatic weapons could be seen outside the White House.
--The FAA ordered the entire nationwide air traffic system shut down.
A senior U.S. intelligence official, speaking on the condition of anonymity, said, "We don't know who's doing it. Clearly, it's terrorism related, a carefully coordinated attack. It's not the work of an unsophisticated enemy. It's too soon to say who."
Paul Begala, a Democratic consultant, said he witnessed an explosion near the Pentagon.
"It was a huge fireball, a huge, orange fireball," Begala said in an interview on his cell phone.
He said another witness told him a helicopter exploded. AP reporter Dave Winslow also saw the crash. He said, "I saw the tail of a large airliner.
Gen. Richard Myers, vice chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, said that prior to the crash into the Pentagon, military officials had been notified that another hijacked plane had been heading from the New York area to Washington. He said he assumed that hijacked plane was the one that hit the Pentagon, though he couldn't be sure.
Meanwhile, one of two planes that crashed into the World Trade Center was hijacked after takeoff from Boston, a U.S. official said, citing a transmission from the plane.
The second plane may have flown out of Newark, N.J., the official said, speaking on condition of anonymity.
Asked if there was any possibility the crashes were anything other than deliberate, the official said it appeared not to be an accident, the official said.

The TV is reporting that a Palestinian group conducted these attacks. No matter who did it many Americans will believe that it was done by Palestinians. Over the last 5 years public opinion in the US has been turning toward the Palestinians and away from the Israelis.
But now, this attack will rate up their with the loss of the Battleship Maine and the attack on Pearl Harbor. Who ever has done this has doomed themselves, and they have destroyed Palestine as well.

PITTSBURGH (AP) -- A large plane crashed Tuesday morning just north of the Somerset County Airport, airport officials said. The plane, believed to be a Boeing 767, crashed about 10 a.m. about 8 miles east of Jennerstown, according to county 911 dispatchers, WPXI-TV in Pittsburgh reported. The airport is about 80 miles southeast of Pittsburgh.

World markets plummet after "apparent terrorist attack"

LONDON (FTMW) - Global markets slumped on Tuesday afternoon after two aircraft crashed into New York's World Trade Center, causing the collapse of both towers in what President Bush called an "apparent terrorist attack".
Indices plunged in extremely volatile trade as the disaster escalated with reports of planes crashing into the Pentagon in Washington, causing part of the building to collapse. The White House and key federal buildings were evacuated. See Terrorism strikes hit U.S.
The Federal Aviation Authority said all aircraft had been grounded and all flights to the U.S. had been diverted to Canada.
World indices slump
Frankfurt's DAX 30 fell as much as 9 percent before rebounding slightly. It is presently off 7.4 percent at 4,324.4. In Paris, the CAC 40 [FR:1804546] fell 5.6 percent to 4,137.7 while Neuer Markt [DE:1809455] fell 9.3 percent to 827.5.
London's FTSE 100 [UK:1805550] shed 4 percent to 4,830.7 while the FTSE TechMARK [UK:1859502] fell 4.1 percent to 1,285.5. See London market report
Meanwhile, Stockholm's benchmark OEX index fell 8.3 percent, the Amsterdam AEX index [NL:1810101] fell 5.6 percent and Milan's MIB 30 was down 7.5 percent.
Latin American bourses also slumped after the attack. Trading was later halted in Argentina, Chile and Brazil.
The New York Stock Exchange delayed the market open indefinitely and the London Stock Exchange is being evacuated, although trading continued.
Currency markets also saw sharp swings in the wake of the disaster. Sterling hit six-month highs against the dollar at £1.4692 and traded recently at £1.463. The dollar spiked up against the Euro reaching a high around $0.909 and recently traded at $0.9030, up from earlier levels of $0.8975 before the blast.
October Brent Crude soared by $2.42 to $30.01 in London boosting oil majors BP [UK:BP] and Shell [UK:SHEL], up 5 percent and 6.1 percent respectively.
Gold surged, trading at $287, up $16 an ounce in London.
Insurers, airlines hit
European insurers across the board were dumped with UK insurers CGNU [UK:CGNU] and Royal Sun & Alliance [UK:RSA] off more than 9 percent. Germany's Allianz [DE:840400] [US:AZ] dropped 13 percent and Munich Re [DE:843000] plunged 16 percent.
Among the airlines, British Airways [UK:BAY] fell 22 percent and Lufthansa [DE:823212] followed suit, off 10 percent.

United's site just has a press release, but I think they said flight 93 was from Newark to San Fransisco.
I know the area where it crashed, and it's just where the allegheny mountains begin, _nothing but trees_, so obviously they didn't acheive what they were aiming for.
There are still planes unaccounted for by airlines.

I work right across the river from NYC, and around 9 someone told me that a plane had hit the WTC. I ran down to the conference room and saw a huge cloud of smoke. There was a giant hole in the building, and i could see the flames licking out. A few minutes later, the second airplane hit in a huge explosion. I went back to my office to talk to co-workers, and about 20 minutes later, went back to the conference room. I just got there when there was this huge puff of dust and smoke, and I saw the building fall.
Please, if anyone wants to help, go see your local red cross, and donate a few pints of blood. We are going to need it.

Certainly this will mean air travel will be different. Certainly this will mean our government will try to pass all sorts of laws blatantly anti-Constitutional. Certainly this will mean GW will lash out in some ill-advised retaliatoty scheme to try and get revenge.

All news outlets on the Internet are shut down due to massive surge in traffic, so I am summarizing from reports collected via television, as well as friends in CNN , New York, and Boston. The best source for news is probably television broadcast, or your local city's newspaper website.
Around 8:00 AM, two planes smashed into one each of the towers of the World Trade Center in New York City, not more than twenty minutes apart. One of the airplanes was confirmed to be an American Airlines flight 11 from Boston to Los Angeles, which was hijacked and diverted. The other was also a hijacked American Airlines flight, this has not been confirmed.
Around 9:00 AM, the south tower of the WTC collapsed. People were seen jumping out of the 101-story building's topmost floors. At about 9:30, the second tower also collapsed. Both towers of the World Trade Center have been utterly destroyed.
At about the same time, a plane also crashed into the Pentagon building in Washington DC. That plane was also a hijacked passenger airliner. Another passenger airliner (United Airlines flight 93, enroute to San Francisco) has crashed in Pennsylvania, which may also have been hijacked. Car bombs have been reported at the US Capitol and the State Department.
The White House, State Department, Treasury, and Pentagon have all been evacuated. Manhattan island has been quarantined and Wall Street has suspended trading. Canary Wharf in London, The Sears Tower, Chicago Board of Trade, and John Hancock Center in Chicago, the John Hancock and Prudential Towers in Boston, and CNN Center in Atlanta have all been evacuated/locked down. Major downtown centers in cities across the United States are also being evacuated. The Federal Aviation Authority (FAA) has grounded *all* flights in the USA.

I remember after the WTC and Oklahoma City bombings of reports of attacks against muslims and people of arabic descent, including harassment and mosques being vandalized.
I won't be surprised to hear organized calls to violence against a group of people as a result of this horrific act -- an attitude no better than that of a terrorist -- though I might be slightly surprised if such calls come from any standing politicians.

I was on a flight last week and I noticed that there is NO security for the pilots of commercial planes.
The cockpits need to be secured. I'd propose that the cockpit be completely separated from the rest of the plane, separate ventilation etc.
With hindsight, we now see the weapons that these planes can cause.

Perhaps another poster has addressed this... but I was wondering about the networks/computer information that is stored in the building. What has been lost in this? How much has been backed up elsewhere?
I live and go to school in Newark, and fom my school you can see thick columns of smoke coming from where the WTC towers were. Here is all the info I have heard on local news, please realize some news is still unconfirmed, and at a time like this lots of conflicting stories are coming out.
It is said that both of the towers have collapsed now, I don't know if that means half-way, or to the ground.
All of the tunnels, bridges, subway, trains, to Manhattan are closed. The same is said to be true of the transportation in Manhattan, people are told to walk North if they are located in the South Manhattan area.
Newark airport has been closed. One of the flights that hit the WTC supposedly was highjacked out of Newark, and supposedly so was the flight that crashed near Pittsburg.
Just about everything in the area is shut down. My university in Newark shut down all classes, and I believe most universities and big business in the area have done the same.

About an hour later, a plane crashed into the Pentagon in Washington, part of which later collapsed.
Sources say a second plane was heading toward the Pentagon; F-16 jets were in the air monitoring it.

Was talking to my dad on the phone, sounds like there is a plane grounded at Hopkins in Cleveland, apparently with a bomb. They were taking passengers off the plane when I talked to him.
They were saying on the news that another plane was in the air, possible headed to Dayton or Detroit. Kinda uncertain though.

My first visit to the States (from England) was last Thursday to New York City.

agent, said five or six people jumped out of the windows. People screamed every
time another person leaped.
David Reck was handing
out literature for a candidate for public advocate a few blocks away when he
saw a jet come in "very low, and then it made a slight twist and dove into the

People ran down the stairs
in panic and fled the building. Thousands of pieces of what appeared to be office
paper came drifting over Brooklyn, about three miles away.
Within the hour, an aircraft
crashed on a helicopter landing pad near the Pentagon, and the West Wing of
the White House was evacuated amid threats of terrorism. And another explosion
rocked New York about an hour after the crash.
"Today we've had a national
tragedy," Bush said in Sarasota, Fla. "Two airplanes have crashed into the World
Trade Center in an apparent terrorist attack on our country." He said he would
be returning immediately to Washington.
Terrorist bombers struck
the World Trade Center in February 1993, killing six people and injuring more
than 1,000 others.
"A second occurrence is
just beyond belief," said Ira Furber, former National Transportation Safety
Board spokesman.
Several subway lines were
immediately shut down Tuesday. Trading on Wall Street was suspended.

a bookstore on the World Trade Center's first floor when the first explosion

In 1945, an Army Air Corps
B-25, a twin-engine bomber, crashed into the 79th floor of the Empire State
Building in dense fog.

I don't understand why the second plane wasn't shot down. The US air force ought to have a crapload of fighters that it can deploy to new york within about 10 minutes. They must have detected the second plane on radar... So why wasn't it shot down over some water or a big field or something? Clearly it would have been bad if the 2nd plane were loaded with people, but when you make the decision -- either a planeful of people or a planeful AND an unknown number when the plane crashes into the middle of NYC...
Now, I guess, the USA is gonna have SAM sites all over the place...

There may stil be up to 5 hijacked planes in the air, but that is very unsubstantiated.
I know this is horrible but my first thought when I heard about the plane crash was 'gee, I hope everyone there has off-site backups'. At the time, I was mostly joking and didn't know how serious the damage was.
Now, while I'm struggling with the human toll, I am also wondering about all the data centers in the World Trade Center that are now dust. Looking over their client directory, I found at least half a dozen companies that did just data hosting. It also looks as though most every Fortune 100 company had a major toe-hold in the building.
I can't help but wonder what sort of data has been lost and how this is going to screw up finantial records for months if not years to come.

The first plane in the World Trade Center attack was American flight 11 from Boston to LA. The selection of this flight seems somewhat arbitrary, as the flight would need to be diverted from its flight path for over a half hour to reach New York. This is in line with reports that the FBI had been tracking a terrorist takeover of a flight shortly before the crash.
Security at Logan is typical as compared against other US airports, with metal detectors between the terminals and the gate areas with all baggage going through an X-Ray device. A terrorist would be able to enter the gate area easily with a ceramic weapon as the current technology does not detect ceramics. It is, however, unlikely they got a bomb through the baggage area without inside assistance, nor would they need a bomb to affect this level of devastation.
As far as having a bomb on the plane, this is not a likely scenario. There would be enough fuel in the wings to cause the type of explosion we all saw on TV, furthermore they would want to crash a plane from another city to increase the amount of vapor in the wings to allow for greater combustibility and produce a more powerful explosion. This would be why they did not hijack a plane out of New York for the attack, as they would risk having the fuel tanks full which would have reduced the violence and effectiveness of the explosion.

The plane in Pittsburgh has been confirmed that it was highjacked. It was enroute from Washington DC to San Fran. Probably with a lay over in Chicago.

The finical district in London has pretty much been evacuated apparently. We've got a some big towers and London is surrounded by airports and US military bases. This is bad, my thoughts go out to the relatives and friends of those harmed in this terrible act. Like most Londoners I've witnessed terrorist attacks (on a much smaller scale) and it fills me with pure dread. I only hope that it's the work of a small group, so that the retribution will cause minimal 'innocent' deaths. Peace.

I don't know what the appropriate reaction is to these terrible attacks, but whatever the US decides, they have my sympathy, without reservations. My collegues at work feel the same.
I hope everyone thinks about this, real hard, especially those people/countries normally not sympathetic to the US. Think about this, not only now but especially during/after the US's response.

Everytime a disaster of this magnitude occurs, I feel the need for a better information structure. For example why couldn't we figure out which AA crashed? If we had a flexible db where we could populate it with data of planes we know landed safely then would could determine the possible jet that crashed. The db needs to be populated by anyone, yet we need easy unique identifiers for the populators. The db would need to be very flexible, structured quickly (eg establishing a list of workers in a building, their status, when they checked in, where then can be reached, etc...). If I was in the area of the disaster it would be nice for me to enter my status, thus any one concerned w/ my health could check the db. Also the could see any message I put up. Access via phone would be great to. Any open source projects doing this?

THERE IS NO REASON FOR THIS. Even if one government nuked civilian populations for fun... it always comes back to logic and reason. IF what your enemy did is 'evil' by your definition (thus the reason for your hate) then if you commit the same act YOU ARE EVIL BY YOUR OWN DEFINITION. However, I do agree that attacking them is not the way to stop terroist attacks. While my natural inclination is to say bomb them into the dark ages that's not the best way to stop this. It would've been much better if we'd been smart and minded our own business BEFORE this happened, but now that it's happened lets not fail to learn our lesson.

ABD reports that the planes attacking the world trade center towers in Manhattan were a Boeing 767 and 757, not sure which plane hit first. As seen on live TV, both towers have now collapsed, the World Trade center no longer exists. God only knows how many people were unable to escape the buildings before the collapse.
A third attack sent a plane into the Pentagon building in Washington DC. A portion of this buildnig has been destroyed, apparently the plane hit the side and penetrated into the inner courtyard area, the portion of the building hit has collapsed.
Earlier reports of a car-bomb outside the State building in Washington DC seem to be untrue, no such car-bomb has happened.
A fourth plane crash in the state of Pennsylvania has been reported to have happened, but no real details beyond that. At first it was said to have happened near Pittsburgh, but later said to have happened near Philadelphia.
A fifth plane had been reported unaccounted for after all airships in the USA were ordered to land immediately, a United Airlines flight. A plane has recently landed somewhere with the same origin as this missing United flight, but they were not yet certain if this was the same flight landing or not.
The FAA has grounded all flights in the USA and ordered all flights already in the air to land at the nearest airport immediately. Apparently Canada has ordered all Canadian flights grounded as well. This was done in the hopes of preventing any other possible hijacked kamikaze missions from completing.
Maybe America can now understand the intensity of the hatred towards America by countries that have suffered from direct or indirect agresion against them by the American government (not the American people).
If you, as an American, cant understand how foreigners could hate America enough to do this you don't know your own countries history (past & current).
Still, having said the above, my heart felt condolences to those who have lost family in this tragedy.
The scariest part is that the media here in the US keeps saying "this is a declaration of war against America" and keep talking about how the US is going to have to go to war. They're trying to make policy for the government. What is wrong with our media? Why were they so unprepared?

Any useful leader would long ago have turned away from terrorism, and toward realistic efforts for peace. Arafat has been the singular roadblock to this.

Secondly, what has Israel been doing in the last few weeks ? Regular helicopter and tank attacks on Palestinians, with little thought as to civilian casualties.
America has supported Israel in this. It has not castigated Israel for any over-reaction (when many other non-Arab nations have)nad it has done nothing to distance itself from these actions. Whether you support these actions or not, this evident support will have consequences for the safety of Americans.
You might regard Israel as justified, you might regard America's support for it as reasonable, but you should not be surprised when others don't feel that way and response by an escalated attack.

HTF is this an "insight" ? It's one viewpoint, and it's understandable. It might even be morally justified (you have to ask yourself that). What it clearly isn't is "Insightful". What's an "insight" ? It's a new and novel view of something that makes it clearer and opens up a new path through some problem.

All planes en route to the US are being diverted to Canadian airports, where they and their passengers will stay until air traffic is restored.
All other flights in Canada have been grounded, as in the US.
Just letting everyone know what's up.
I sympathise with your desire for revenge. But please try to bear in mind in the days and weeks to come that revenge against a large group of people will hurt many innocent people. Those responsible for this attack are unspeakably evil individuals, but don't get so caught up in your desire to punish them that you end up hurting yet more innocent people - for example the civilians of another country. God forbid this tragedy should get any worse; that's what will happen if the US seeks revenge against an easy national target such as Palestine or Afghanistan rather than hunting down the individuals responsible for this awful attack. Please don't add your voice to those calling out for blood. Enough blood has been spilled already. Let us find and punish the individuals responsible, but let us not make an easy scapegoat out of innocent civilians, whatever their nationality or religion.

Palestinians across the West Bank on Tuesday celebrated the series of aircraft attacks on New York and Washington. There were scenes of celebration in the West Bank cities of Nablus, Tul Karm, Bethlehem and the Balata refugee camp.
While Palestinian Authority Chairman Yasser Arafat condemned the attacks which levelled the twin towers of the World Trade Center in New York City and struck the Pentagon in Washington, hundreds of Palestinians distributed sweets in Nablus.
"I feel I am in a dream. I never believed that one day the United States would come to pay a price for its support to Israel," said Mustafa, a 24-year-old Palestinian gunman.
Several dozen Palestinian youths gathered in East Jerusalem to celebrate as well, honking out wedding tunes on their car horns. "We are so happy that America was hit. America is against us in supporting Israel," Suleiman, one of the demonstrators, said.
In Nablus, motorists honked their horns and gunmen fired into the air from assault rifles to cheer on the attacks which unfolded in the space of a few hours.
F16's are flying over Washington and I've heard rumors that there is another hijacked plane that may have to be shot down.
An aircraft carrier has been dispatched to NY and another one will be sitting off the coast in the DC area. Presumably they'll be there to intercept any international flights that have been hijacked.
This was WELL coordinated. Not only did the hijackers have to get past security, but most likely they would have to fly the planes themselves.
I know a lot of pilots, they're not weak willed individuals. Given the order to ram the WTC I believe most pilots would've chosen to tank the plane into the pavement elsewhere.
Whoever did this is going to get a lot of grief over this. I've heard that people in Palastine are celibrating. That's a mistake. Most American's couldn't care less about Isreal, the Middle East or Palastine.
Assuming this attack came from Palastine sympathizers they've just guaranteed that just about every American will be begging the president to nuke them.
The sight of the World Trade Center collapsing, millions running for safety and bailing out of windows - on the other hand - is far from routine. Innocent people are innocent all over the world, and when they are killed, our hearts should bleed for all of them.
I condemn all this loss of life, but I ask you all to keep a balanced view when judging these actions, and to react accordingly.

There's a report of another plane crashing in Somerset, Pennsylvania, on CNN. It's unclear what the target was or whether it was related to the terrorist attacks.
There was also a report in some media (I think it was in the initial BBC story) that a carbomb went off outside the State Department in Washington - apparently that was false.
They maybe crazy, but they're not stupid.

Violence induces more violence. Retaliation will only lead to more deaths. If you are a citizen of the U.S. of America, please write your representative right now and ask him to join a plea for peace. Historically the U.S. reaction to this kind of attack is to counter strike. It's highly probably that it's already being planned or even carried on. That will solve nothing. You might get even, but that achieves nothing. The death will not come back and the attack has been already recorded on the books of history. At this point in time, counter attacking is irrational and puts not only the lives of U.S. citizens at risk, but those of lots of people all arround the world, too.

It's truely unbelievable that cockpits are so vulnerable, this type shit has been going on for at least thirty years and now it's really done some damage. I wonder if the aircraft companies can now say that the cost of implementing security is less than the cost of the disaster and possible litigation in much the same way that car companies weigh up saftey concerns?

The Arab nations attacked Israel numerous times intent on total genocide, vowing to 'push the Jews into the sea'. They acted, then, in a unified fashion claiming that 'all arab nations were one'(panarabism). Against all odds they lost, no American aid involved. Then the Arabs couldn't give a shit about the palestinians. Sure, the nations like to complain, but has Syria allowed the Palestinians to move into Syria since all Arab nations are one? Prior to the creation of Israel, there was no such thing as 'Palestine'. What hypocracy. Palestine was what the Romans tried to rename Israel when they wated to destroy it. The Arabs got 99% of the land in the Middle East. Israel got 1%. And apparently this was too much for the Arabs.
Israel tries to keep Palestinians from settling near Israeli millitary establishments because it would pose a national security risk. They can't get permits in those areas (so it's very difficult for palestianians to get building permits anywhere, since Israel is such a small place- the size of New Jersy, for god's sake.). They build anyway, and then get pissed off when the buildings are bulldozed.
Keep these things in mind;
1. It's easy to judge others, but name one nation in all of history that has had its very existance continually threatened for over 50 years and maintained such a high degree of personal liberty. An arab Israeli citizen still has more freedom than a Palestinian, an Iraqui, a Syrian etc.
2. While Arafat claims to have given up on the destruction of Israel he gave as a condition of 'peace' what he calls the 'Palestinian right of return'. Any Palestinian who wanted to could become an Israeli citizen. Israel, unlike it's neighibors, is a democracy and would not survive intact. No nation should be forced to submit to its own destruction.
3. If you think Syria or Iraq is better than Israel you should seriously go live there. If you're feeling really frisky, try telling your neighibor about your religious beliefs if you have any. Find out what the government thinks of that kind of behavior. Iraqui and Palestinian broadcasting stations make up facts wholesale to support the government's chosen political beliefs. Oh yeah, they don't even bother to rebroadcast the BBC.
4. A person watching WWII late in the game might have had difficulty telling the Americans from the Germans. They may have pointed out that there were concentration camps in both nations. Reading history, it becomes clear who the agressors were. Israel made huge concesions during the peace process. What have they gotten to date? More bombings. The only thing that has prevented the wholesale slaughter of all Israelis has been the use of force in self defense. In that situation, I'd make the same choices that the Israelis have.

I am sickened by this morning's horrible acts of terrorism, and I morn for what will surely turn out to be thousands of dead.
We, in the technical community, need to make sure that this event is not turned into a political opportunity for other groups that seek to undermine our freedoms, also for what they see as the greater good. If we yield to them, then we will have also lost. I am talking about not one specific group, but many: those who seek to trade away our rights of privacy, our relatively free access to information, and due process.
For example, I don't know if it's true, but I remember hearing a rumor that then-FBI director Louis Freeh told a congressional committee in closed session that if cryptographic export restrictions were loosened that he would finger those who voted for it at the next terrorist incident. Louis Freeh has his own political problems right now, but you can bet that others of similar mind will articulate this view in the news and talk shows over the next week.
Fortunately, while there is probably little you can do to help the victims of this morning's attacks if you are not in the affected areas, there are things that you can do to help defend our freedoms from opportunist political attack.
If you have some relevant credentials and are well spoken, consider contacting reporters and just offering yourself as a resource for some quotations on why we should not ban cryptography, require hard ID's for internet access, etc. For example, taking the perspective that a good offense is the best defense, you might want to make the point that we need ubiquitous strong cryptography to impede cyber cracking, especially when you consider that stolen information is often of a nature that it cannot be made secret again once the information is out. These terrorists must have gotten access to some information that they should not have had at some point in the course of their preparations (we'll see what the details turn out to be). That might turn out to yield a few examples of the sort of thing that could have benefitted from ubiquitous encryption. (I imagine there will be speculation in the other direction that these terrorists used might have used strong crypto themselves.)
You might consider submitting letters to the editor of print media (some people still get their information that way, I hear). Finally, you might want to write your representatives and senators know. I imagine that congress is going to get so much mail over this that letters on this topic will not be read in detail by anyone, but some consideration is but I imagine that attention will be paid to how many letters say, in essence, "don't put the constitution in the paper shredder yet."
I can accept that some institutional changes may have to be made to reduce chances of something like this happening again, and I certainly don't mean to detract from the significance of the tremendous tragedy to that has occurred today. Let's just make sure that this does not turn into a second tragedy with respect to the way our society works.

Besides, the U.S. now has reason to fully commit its troops and other resources. In Somalia and even the Gulf War, no U.S. lives were at risk, other than the soldiers themselves. I live in Fort Greene, Brooklyn; just a few blocks from both the Manhattan and Brooklyn bridges. The lower Manhattan skyline is visible from the end of my block and most of the route to Manhattan.
This morning a little after 9 am I heard a bang. I later learned that this was the second plane hitting the South tower.
I got a call from my mother in Chicago who wanted to warn me that 'the World Trade Center is under attack by planes.' I turned on the radio as President Bush acknowledged an 'apparent terrorist attack.' Immediately, I got off the line, grabbed my camera and my girlfriend's Walkman, and hopped on my bicycle.
The plume of smoke, an immense black ribbon stretching toward Manhattan, was visible the entire route down Flatbush Avenue, which terminates at the Manhattan Bridge. This same roadway then becomes Canal Street after reaching Manhattan.
I tried to take the pedestrian walkway over the Manhattan Bridge, but it seemed at the time that the police weren't going to allow me to pass. So I went to the next best vantage point.
So I rode into DUMBO; Down Underneath the Manhattan Bridge Overpass, to the park in between the Brooklyn and Manhattan bridges. Buildings obstructed the World Trade Center itself until I reached that point.

As I came out from under the Manhattan Bridge, I was moved to revulsion at the sight of the gutted twin behemoths. Several floors of the buildings seemed to have been reduced to black girders, consumed by flame as gouts of black smoke spouted from their interiors. Still too large to fall, or so I thought.
There were fewer than 50 people watching with me, similarly aghast. They opened their car doors and played their radios as loud as they could.
I watched and shot video from this vantage point as the reports came in: Another plane hit the Pentagon. A plane was missing in Pennsylvania. Another DC Police plane was unaccounted for. I watched reviling at the horror as objects fell from the cracked and fuming edifice.
The city seemed uncharacteristically quiet. Sirens could be heard over the East River in Manhattan, and occasionally an escorted emergency vehicle or two would cross the Bridges toward Manhattan.
And then the South tower collapsed.
It started at the break about 3/4 of the way up the building, the black smoke overcome by white, milky dust. I thought merely the top of the building would fall off, but the entire length of the building splintered open, shattering and unfolding like an explosion at a crystal chandelier factory.
A solid, white pea-soup fog enveloped downtown. I could only see the very tip of the North Tower's antenna.
Incredulously, I tried to imagine New York with only one World Trade Tower. Skylines would have to be revised. The remaining tower would be an icon of American resolve and determination over adversity. Musing this kept me from considering the real losses.
And then the North tower vaporized, unfolding in a shattering parasol of black, then white dust.
I felt growing dread about my proximity to a remaining landmark, the Brooklyn Bridge, so I unlocked my bike and started home. Nothing more to see.
It was then I noticed the refugees- throngs of people pouring over the walkways of the bridges above me. Streams of pedestrians walking FDR Drive, the highway running along Manhattan's East side. I even spot a few police trucks headed North on FDR, trailing eddies of debris and dust behind them.
F-16 fighter jets prowl the sky on high, while Police helicopters and boats trawl the lower strata. All powerless; unable to change the condition of the city; only manage the aftermath.
I deftly ride my bicycle home, streets gridlocked in car traffic. The police on the streets in Brooklyn are evidently reserves; I spot several uniformed *school* policewomen standing on corners, directing traffic.
The city is closed south of Canal street. The bridges and tunnels are closed. The subways are closed. Every payphone I can see is in use. Storefronts are shuttering. Now I am safe at home, but I fear for my girlfriend.
She works in Times Square in a relatively high-profile building. I had several messages from her on my return. Amazingly, I am able to get through to her in the office and she informs me that her office has closed. She is walking to a coworker's apartment 29 blocks away. I don't know when we can... er, UPDATE: She's made it to her coworker's apartment without incident. No word yet on when she can cross over the East River to our home in Brooklyn, but she's safe for now. So friends and family- we're OK!
I still don't know what to make of all this- it seems like a movie.

My university is a long way from NYC (I'm in Canada) but some of my friends are leaving to go home and watch the news. I know that in the context of pain and suffering world-wide, this is a small event, but it is still a horrible tragedy and a sad, sad day for those whose loved ones are victims.

If you dig a little into what's currently going on in the middle east and into history, you'll find out that:
* Israel is not a democracy if you are not a jew. Palestinians have less freedom than jews because the latter are making sure palestinians can't move freely between palestinian town & villages, can't dig a well nowhere (Israel considers control of water a "military concern"), can't build houses except for a few isolated spots already overcrowded, etc.
* The right to return is what the palestinians have been clamoring for since they were expelled from their land in the 1940's. The creation of the state of Israel was not a clean, friendly affair. Zionist extremists burned a few palestinian villages to the ground in order to create a state of panic amidst the palestinian population who fled in fear of their lives, in effect emptying great parts of a country so that jews would go and occupy palestinian land. The palestinian, many who still own the keys of the homes they had to flee to save their skins and where jews are now living, just want their houses/farms/whatever back. They did not abandon what they had willingly in 1948.
* Not all arab nations are one -- this is typical Zionist propaganda. And the surounding arab nations are hostile towards Israel because of the very dirty way Israel was created in '48. As for the so-called lack of help towards the palestinians, might I remind you of US military support to Israel as well as economic & political pressures against Arab states that keeps them in check right now?

The conflict between the Jews & the Arabs was created by Theodore Herzl when he conceived the idea of zionism just over 100 years ago.
Before then, the Islamic/Arab worlds were where thousands apon thousands of Jews sought sanctiory (& prospured, too) from the on going inquisitions & pogroms of Christian Europe (as far as field as Spain to the Ukraine).
The simple fact is, & even Israeli experts agree on this, if zionism had not been conceived about a century ago, there would be no Israeli/Arab conflict today.
The problem with the "Never Again" defense is that no sooner had they suffered their own attrocities then they started INFLICTING THE SAME ATTROCITIES in the land they unilaterally decided was theirs and theirs alone.
Israel COULD have had credibility as an idea if they'd tried to create a Switzerland of sorts, a promised land flowing with milk and honey where people were free to worship as they pleased and proudly declare their heritage without fear of persecution.
But instead, they decided to found the nation on principles of xenophobia and entitlement and death and suffering to anyone who opposed them. That's the main reason why the arabs detest them.
It's sad, because I am sure that not all Israelis are like the guy who killed Yitzak Rabin, or Ariel Sharon. They are most likely human beings who would like to live out their lives as best they can and let their neighbors do the same. Most palestinians are probably like that, too.
Frankly, I don't think any power in that region is capable of fairly governing it.

I remember reading an article on possible terrorist scenarios in Maxim in August of last year. It goes into some detail of possible scenarios. I remember thinking then that it sounded very plausible. But you kind of rely upon the fact that anything you read of this nature has been investigated by those in charge right? What with the events today, is it unreasonable to think it could happen anytime?

indeed, if the case he makes is valid, america is in fact driving the islamophobic bandwagon.

My school is about 4 blocks away from the WTC.
Here is a consciousness stream I wrote after I got home if anyone is interested:
Ryder ran into my photography classroom. He shouted " a missile hit the world trade center" I didn't think it was true
he said turn on the tv
we did
we saw the hole in the building and the reporter explained that a plane had crashed into it
we were in disbelief
there was a gaping hole in the building
we continued the lesson, with the tv on showing its pictures of the destruction
I had a free period after photography and wandered the halls
i saw the hole in the building with my own eyes
I then heard that another plane had hit the building
and that the pentagon had also been hit
It seemed like i was in a movie
acting
while on the first floor, I was looking outside, and i noticed a butterfly
it was calm, fluttering about, while all this was going on
i had never seen a bug in stuyvesant, let alone a beautiful monarch like this one
I wandered some more, in a daze, and i happened into a classroom that was watching the events
I looked out its window and could see small figures falling from the hole in the building
they were people

then the electricity in our school started to give out
I felt the building rumble
and the trade center collapsed upon itself
the cloud of dust rushed towards stuyvesant

i didn't feel like going up to the 9th floor at a time like that
