  1. Sprint time and my opinion on Review: Ultimate Spider-Man · · Score: 1

Now for a moment of shameless showing off; my best time to complete the game from starting a new game to completign the last mission is just under 2 hours. Can anyone beat that? Course, I have an unfair advantage, I was QA at activision on USM for about 2 months. Played way more USM than should ever be played of one game.

And my views on the game? Overall, a good game. Not great, but good. It's a fun romp, but not something I would stick with for more than an hour or so at a time.

What I liked: A minority I may be, but I actually liked the Spider-man combat. It was a lot of fun seeing whether you could get Ultimate and working on becoming an expert on when to switch attacks. The boss fights in general are very fun, and it's a lot of fun to just blow random things up with cars. Throwing cars with Venom definitly takes some getting used to, but it's quite accurate one your used to it. If you want a challenge, try hitting helicopters with army tanks in "The Great Escape"

What I didn't like so much: Shenanigans got awfully repetitive awfully fast, especially med transport missions. Chase mission are especially annoying with Venom because one mistake can cost you the entire mission ("chase electro" in particular is bad for this) Trick races are obscenly difficult in comparison to the rest of the game. After working about 50 hours a week just playing USM, I still could only get Ultimate on about half of the trick races. And I was one of the best at them!

Final thing: The complaint about tentacle attacks being the most effective attack with Venom is only true when you aren't very good. You can get some awesome combos with Venom when you learn him better. For example, hitting tentacle, then grab, then punch will have Venom tantacle attack, grab the emeny with the tentcale, pull them close and then Venom will power punch them into the ground. Lots of fun!

Oh yes, and buy Gun when it comes out. Great game. Can't say anymore, I've got a bitch of an NDA over me.

The fighting is not dumber down, it's different. Instead of focusing all your attacks on one person like in Spidey 2, in USM you gain signifigant bonuses for attacking multiple enemies at once, so it become a game of how well you can calculate whether to attack a greater threat or spread attacks around to deal more aggregate damage.

  3. Re:They're asking for trouble. on ESRB Demands Hidden Content Review · · Score: 3, Insightful

I do not think you understand the problem. Here is an example of what the prblem is:

    1. The developers put an edgy thing into their game (lets say blood from gunshots).

    2. This game is now submitted to testers at the production end, who notice the blood.

    3. The testers tell the production legal team about the blood.

    4. The legal team decides that they want a "T" rating, so they tell the devolpers to take it out.

    5. The developers, now in beta and nearing release date, decide to disable the blood (say, by turning it invisible) so as to not delete code which may cause problems other places in the game. (Which happens A LOT. A minor change in one part of a game can FUBAR a whole different part. I've seen it happen.)

    6. Steps 1-5 repeated again when title is delivered to Microsoft/Sony/Nintendo, only now development has only a few weeks to fix problems Microsoft/Sony/Nintendo told them to fix.

    7. Game is released with all objectionable content deleted when possible, disabled when practiality and time demands.

    8. Hacker comes along and decides to make a name for himself and re-enables the disabled content. (No doubt violating the EULA in the process)

    9. Crack is distributed around the Internet

    10. Well, you know the rest!

The point is that it is not that easy to "simply" delete the code for something and gamea are often on an EXTREMLY tight schedule. I work as a production tester for a major game company, and we hav to work 72 hour weeks! It is not laziness, not just poor planning, it's a reasonable response!

You design an arrow on the plug as well. Point arrow in same direction. Poof, problem solved.
