Before sending ppl into outer space serious problems have to be solved. Space kills! By its sheer size! Or its other extreme parameters. All of those has to be addressed and solved before it makes any sense putting mankind into space for prolonged time.
In _some_ parts of scandinavia (sweden) 10Mbit is possible to get. Here in denmark ADSL is the fastest normal money can by, and the max speed hovers around 2Mbit/512, with very few providing 4Mbit/1Mbit.
Windows has evolved into mainly a x86 platform. Hardware as common as it gets. On the contrary HPC is all about custom/very specialised hardware running a very specialised application built for one perpose alone.
I find it naturally that MS tries its luck in the HPC world, but windows surely does not fit the bill.
I know about hackvalue, but why bother for a webserver? All of the reasons you mention are easily met by a mini-itx board.
Fanless, low on power (can even be frequency/voltage scaled if I remember correctly), small physical footprint, and a lot cheaper than mucking around with some custom built router.
Gramted it is not nearly as much fun than hacking some piece of proporitary hardware!;-)
Given that the PCI interface was introduced to the world by intel in 1992 and that we since have increased the cpu processing powers by a hundred fold (give or take a little) it is really about time that the bus catches up.
Yesterday, Microsoft chief technology officer Craig Mundie said the company won't charge companies to participate in the program, despite the word "Premium" in its name. Microsoft will receive a royalty for each copy of CE that is distributed, whether it is altered or not.
.... one has to wonder if it's just a smart method of getting work done for free? Every single copy sold (modified or not) still generates revenue for MS.
Outsiders agree. "The story here isn't really Linux on cell phones. It's Java running on Linux," Jackson said. "It's more about it being a bigger part of Motorola's Java strategy than it is about the efficacy or viability of Linux."
That's just wrong. The story is about selling more phones. How to do that. Easy: Put (java)games, (java)PIM applications, (java)Chat, (java)anything on the phone. A second bonus is ofcourse that linux runs on top of the PPC arch that motorola develops. It's also worth noting that now that Apple is flirting with IBM motorola needs customers for it's PPC line. It all makes sense: Let one division of motorola use the chips that the other division produces.
I'm only worried about what all this does for battery lifetime of my phone:-/
Am I the only one feeling that moral is a thing of the past? Piracy is wrong, period! While everyone agrees, that you don't steal from poor people, people are starting to go like:
"Company A has XXX Millions dollars, so they won't mind/feel the impact, bla bla".
Wrong! Morally you're not allowed to steal from rich people either. If you have some problems with a CD containing one good song and the rest is utterly bad, boycot the music company for producing crap. If you think movie XYZ is to expensive in the cinema, boycot the movie industry. If you've got something against a corporation, boycot them. Do not turn yourself into a pirate. It's just entertainment for Gods sake, you can easily live without.
... thanks but no thanks. I like my linux box just the way it is. It's about time that clippy took a hint and stayed out of other peoples buissnes.
Great news technically, but ...

239 MPG Car
·
· Score: 2
... my guess is that it won't make any sense economically (might not even help with the environmentally aspect either:/
The thing is, that the car has good figures due to being very very light, kilogram wise. This is done by molding the car in lightweight aluminium, which unfortunatly is very expensive compared to steel. Therefor my guess will be, that the car will be expensive, so much that the econmics are in favor for a normal car + normal gasoline.
As for the environment, the new gasoline is a good thing, but if my memory serves me right, aluminium is not!! Therefor it might be better for the environment just to make ordinary cars.... I do hope that I can be proven wrong, but that's my guestimate on the matter:/
Well, nice specs, but by browsing the messageboards I got the impression, that the product have been delayed again and again, not to mention that I see no pricing info on these beasts.
Your konwledge isn't that good. The fastest 486 in terms of Mhz was the Amd 5x86 - 133Mhz (4*33Mhz) chip. That chip easily overclocked to 160Mhz (4*40Mhz). In terms of pentium performance (integer wise) it was equivalent of a P75 at 133Mhz and of a P90 at 160Mhz (give or take a few percent)
In terms of performance the fastest chip that fitted in a socket 3 was the Cyrix 5x86 120Mhz, which (again speaking of integer performance) was equivalent of a P100.
While serving the purpose of locking the cpu for ordinary people, these small bridges on top of the cpus have attracted all the HW geeks which have unlocked, overclocked, underclocked (to get a quiter system)these cpus.
One of the biggest strength in the Athlon line (in my opinion) is that AMD have been able to sell locked cpus to 90% of the population but have made it possible for the last 10% to overclock these cpus. They have won both the normal consumers and the techfreaks in that respect.
.... ofcourse it also helps that their cpus are affordable and that there are plenty of them!
In order to get this movie out to a broader audience, it will feature things like:
Hordes of Jar Jar binks instead of Nazis
Feature a boyband singing a tribute to Indiana.
A 15 minutes long airship chase (Hindenberg style), so there can be build a computer game over the scene. Ofcourse this chase has to have no relevance to the movie.
Trust me on this! Got it from at friend who got it from his uncle who does kokain with the celebs!?:)
You've got a good (some might say fantastic) director in Steven Spielberg, access to good actors, lots of money, can travel anywhere to shoot the film on the right location....
... and then you MAKE A SEQUEL? Has to be for the money in it! People are going to watch the movie, spielberg are going to get paid, but one has to wonder how much soup you can cook on the same bone!! Use some creativity! Make up new characters, new stories, new worlds. Sigh.
If we change anything......, we should define a new system of units, PI, instead of SI. The basic unit is measurement is the Penguin. It is abbreviated as p.

in terms of latency, hit/miss rate, bandwith, associativity? (n-ways)?
... for watching porn during work :-)

Nothing newsworthy in that really.
Given that the PCI interface was introduced to the world by intel in 1992 and that we since have increased the cpu processing powers by a hundred fold (give or take a little) it is really about time that the bus catches up.

I mean, at $1599 you have certain expectations :-)

Relax dude! It is a joke, and a pretty good one too.
... got backups. Only fools ditch the backup procedure!
If the actually have backups it's only a matter of money/time before sites will be up'n'running again.

So now I'm able to open up 100.000 pr0n pictures in just 2 sec. Ubercool ;-)
Haven't seen any announcements of this Tetris quake engine anywhere?
;-)

As said by Dick Johnson:
