The idea is that the traditional sense of community is being destroyed as corporations pluck up and move wherever the freeways take them, and the digital age has greatly accelerated that. It is not a matter of anything IT related; it is a question of social values. Lord, are you thick. --

Not really. more than 80% of all wealth generated by the stock market has gone to the wealthiest 10% of the population. They make much of it through speculation, or buying mass quanities of a particular stock or group of stocks, driving up the price beyond that of the small investor. --

This can be very handy. I'm assuming that all your users have 10-20 Mb of space on a Unix server somewhere. Windows NT (which I am assuming you are using) has a number of AFS and NFS clinets that will allow you to mount the users' home directories as a drive. You can then set, in most programs, the default "Save To..." directory to be that networked drive. Then make sure to launch a large campaign to let users to know to save their work there. --

Michael Moore would change the anthem and country name, not Nader. He would also abolish presidential elections and replace it with a winner-take-all monster truck rally. Of course, Moore supports Nader, so it's all good. --

They have had one major outage in the last year and a half. It was down for about 12 hours, and they gave me a month off (when I bitched enough:P). The rest of the time, the service has been fast and reliable. They now use pppoe, but it's standard, so rp-pppoe works fine with it. I leave my computer on all day whilest at work, no problems at all. --

Nader is the only really useful candidate on the ballot. The Libertarians are corporate anarchists - any sort of gross violation of personal freedoms, rights, safety, environmental derstruction, is okay, because the marketplace will take care of it!
Tell that to people who saw what the marketplace did in the 1930s. Even better, talk to European Jews who saw what the marketplace did in the 1920s and 1930s to Germany. --

Of course there were extremists who deserved it, but a lot of folks were protesting peacefully
Yeah, Rob, really fucking bright - if you dare express your opinion, you clearly deserve to have your skull bashed in, get sprayed with pepper spray, and then tossed in a cell with 100 other people (standing room only) for 72 hours with no food, little water, and all your rights stripped away from you.
Do you even know who was tossed in jail? Do you honestly BELIEVE the garbage you see on ABC (owned by Disney, a major contributor to the RNC) or any of the other networks? They arrested over 450 people - very very few of whom were "violent". Most were practicing non-violent civil disobedience, the sort of stuff Ghandi used. People laying down in the middle of the street is not violent, and does not deserve the usage of pepper spray - but it was done. People who want delegates to be able to see them and know that they do not like what they stand for don't deserve to be arrested for 'criminal tresspass' on a public street - but it was done.
I know this is basically the wrong forum, and I really do not give a rat's ass if my karma is dropped (it's high enough already, thankyouverymuch), but for fuck's sake - does anyone in this world every really think things through anymore? --

I am going to go out and buy all the parts and give it a whirl. At the worst, I'm out a few bucks. At the best, I've found a way to save s pretty chunk of change for my boss...

$165,000,000 = one lost space exploration device. $165,000,000 = free lunch programs for all of the needy kids in the NYC region for a decade. These kids will not eat lunch otherwise.
Which is more important to you? What does that say about your priorities and your humanitarianism?
This is not a flame, by the way.
I don't care if space research is done. I just believe it should be 100% privately funded. If people are that passionate about space exploration, let them foot the bill directly. -- Matt Singerman

No, you're thinking of the former CEO of a shoe maker in Lynn, MAssachusettes, who told a reporter "I am not in the business of making shoes. I am in the business of making money for my shareholders." That was the quote I was working with.
See, all companies have one goal in mind: To make money for their owners, the shareholders. When that is given utmost priority, all other issues - safe working conditions and fair wages, ensuring software integrity, ensuring safe disposal of hazardous materials - become secondary. The products and services themselves become secondary. MAKING MONEY BECOMES THE PRIMARY GOAL.
Oh, and the government is in the business of helping private enterprise make money. We're still 5.something trillion dollars in the hole, so don't think the government has cash to spare. -- Matt Singerman
You are, after all in the business of making money, not software. All companies are in the business of making money. Your company's embracement of Linux can therefore only be seen as a means to that end. My question is, what is your long-term strategy towards Linux? And please, don't give me a sond bite I can read off your corporate webpage, thanks. -- Matt Singerman
No, you are WRONG. It is NOT a finding of fact - it is a statement saying that the plantiff's case has merit. Study the law a little bit before you go and make such rash comments. -- Matt Singerman
All a preliminary injunction says is that the plantiff's case does in fact have merit, and to prevent further potential damage from being done, the defendant must cease in the offensive behavior until such time as the defendant is cleared. There has been no trial, no finding of fact, and no consideration of the merits of Amazon's case by either a judge or a jury. Don't get too worried too quickly. -- Matt Singerman
Or, to be more specific, it will never make much money. Not enough to justify the types of prices that it will go for. In an age where clickthrough ratios are steadily declining, why would anyone buy stock in a pure search engine? It doesn't have the traffic or services of Yahoo!, nor does it have the number of steady users. -- Matt Singerman

Yes, it is bad. It's like pretty much admitting that you have no ideals, that you're more than happy to sell your soul to the system.
