You can't copyright something that's illegal. You can, however, patent something that's illegal, which results in full disclosure of the patent text (like the way the government patents chemical formulas for illegal substances, and illegal military weapons, or how to grow strains of Mary Jane)
I don't rememeber it being that clear-cut - I wish I was a legal expert - isn't there something that Congress can do to get around that? I mean, this sounds like one of the examples of unconstitutionality that people have been bitching about, but my one-law-class-taken brain keeps regurgitating this weird sense of deja vu on this topic...
McLuhan, says author Marshall Coyne, identified the era of preliterate culture as a golden age in which humankind was at one with itself and nature. Speaking and listening in the absence of both writing and technology involved intensely interactive exchanges that come close to directly sharing thoughts. Then, says Coyne, we entered the age of literacy in which we write, lay things out in order and divide the world. Society in this era is urban, global and fragmented rather than local, integrated and whole.
I don't buy that... just because you're forced to talk to someone doesn't mean that they're going to listen to you - ever hear of selective hearing? Liek when people keep telling you the same stuff over and over until you just selecively ignore their voice?
Then again, most academics I've met have pretty selective hearing...;)
They're even more dumb because they don't charge for the software or its use in the 1st place - aren't people doing them a favor by making this more popular and writing different versions? If they had any brains, they'd GPL the whole thing with a modified license that required people to use their advertising, or something along that line so they could take advantage of the proliferation of clients.
Some of the best stories ever created are created by groups of people. Folk tales, Homer's Illiad and Odyssey... refined through generations of storytellers. If you ask me, given the crap that most writers hack out now-a-days in search of a quick and easy pay-check, a revise-a-book-by-community approach would rock.
You know, I have to agree with that guy from suck (in this article from Friday) about geeks bitching about the things constantly but actually doing very little about them.
If only there was a web site where bithcing could be turned into legitimate public action... like, submit a complaint and someone mails it to a congressman for you;)
Dude, he's talking about selling the entire site. Did you read the auction description? he said that he will continue with the business. He gives stats and a preview page. He is selling a business, not just a domain-name.
That would be an interesting marketing ploy - put your high-profile site up on eBay and get/. to write about it, and use the/-effect instead of banner ads...
I don't know, if it's such a hot company, he could be taking a great risk by that. What if the bids never got that high? People might think that his site isn't all that.
I bet that he's got a huge reserve, and the deal's going to go down offline. Why would anyone let eBay skim a big chunk off a multi-million dollar sale like that? Especially when lawyers are going to get their chunk, anyway... an auction doesn't exactly constitute much of a legal contract for the terms of sale that he's proposing, IMHO. This is just to drwa some potential investors out of the woodwork.
If they keep reusing numbers, I don't want to be the database guy having to write disgusting queries like "select $$$ from transactions_table left join temporary_cards left join members_info on..."
Why do we want completely anonymous purchasing? A better system would be one where everyone accepts what people buy without stupid prejudices.
Say what you want, but when you accept life and all of the possibilities and consequences that come with it, you don't need to hide yourself from others. And when they accept them too, they won't need to hide from you.
c'mon, it would be tough to hold back on a half-assed letter like that one... yeah Taco took some cheap shots (and tried to cover them up in vain, especially at the end of the post), but there were a LOT of cheap shots to take.
The lesson - don't email fscking stupid letters to slashdot and expect to be treated better than everyone else.
It used to be, actually - until auto makers finally realized that there was a huge aftermarket for custom autos and let other shops work on souping up production cars (with lucrative results for all).
Anyone who can work Wayne and Garth into a legitimate conversation should be rewarded somehow. Or at least feel rewarded somehow. Or maybe they never saw Wayne's World II and lost all respect for them...
My Japanese history isn't the greatest, but aroudn the time The Tale of Genji was written, it was the first real work in Japanese, all the rest were in Chinese (because it was believed to be more educated, as the Chinese were very advanced? I think that was the reason...). So I'm not pulling it out of my ass... but maybe Asian history is a little too large and fractured for a good comparison here.
Yeah, why is it that small news sites are always illegitimate, while the big ones are supposedly so big that corporate interests wouldn't make a dent in their reputation? Is it that small news agency's are perceived as easy to bully becauase of their diminuative size? Or just becausae people don't really use their brains all that often, and forget to breathe on a consistent basis?
To paraphrase Henry David Thoreu, the state ultimately doesn't rule by convincing logic or reason, but because it has enough people working for it who can beat the crap out of you.
The Japanese upper class had historically spoken only Mandarin, and left the women and "uneducated" to speak japanese. So size matters little, right? What's perceived as "trendy" and "important" is what people really want to speak. Someone correct me, but don't a lot of country's ruling classes speak English, because of it's "superior" perception? (Just like all governing Europeans spoke French in the 18th century)

If you can do no good, at least do no harm.
I'd hardly call capitalists "jedis," unless you're talking about the dark kind.

Yuck.
... and they aren't really accountable to anyone (because they can audit anyone)... it is scary, dude.

cool springboard modules?
you mean, they've actually come out with a few? Besides that helluva expensive mp3 player that was 5 months late?
Hey, a lot of horses breed with a little help from people...
DOH!
