Are you kidding? Parents are so scared and paranoid now, I am surprised they would let their kid even ride a Big Wheel. Riding one involves allowing them outside, and even possibly onto the sidewalk. I guess if they had a cell phone so they could call from the driveway...
"they're too young to be by themselves until they're 13"
I really pity kids these days if all parents feel this way. 13 yo is Junior High! That is too young to be by themselves? As I have said before, I must have had really bad parents. I think I will call them tonight and give them a ration of shit for treating me so poorly throughout my childhood.
I agree wholeheartedly. I must have had some horrendously bad parents, based on the posts I have been reading in this discussion. I can't believe I survived!
When I was a kid, it was rare to see a parent drive their child to school. Kids walked, took the bus, or rode their bikes. Now, every morning when I drive by the same elementary school I went to, it is rare to see a parent not drive their kid. The bike rack that was always full when I went there now sits empty, not one single bike. Heck, it is rare to see a kid ride a bike period. My neighbor drives her 6th grade son the 1/4 mile to and from school everyday. I rode my bike the 2 miles to and from junior high every day. I guess I had bad parents.
And it is pretty much luck of the draw whether or not a drunk driver crosses the yellow line and smashes into you head on. Get real, you can't control other drivers and their actions anymore than you can control whether or not the plane you fly in has mechanical problems. There is the illusion of control when you drive, but it is merely an illusion. You think that careful drivers who pay attention and have safe vehicles never die in auto accidents?
According to the NTSB, your odds of dying in a single trip in a car is 7.6 million to 1. Your odds of dying in a single trip in a plane is 52.6 million to 1.
53% of fatal plane crashes (1950-2004) were caused by pilot error. 8% by "sabotage" which includes hijackings.
Gotta love the moderators here on Slashdot. Hundreds of people spew their own IANAL legal expertise bullshit, and get modded insightful. A real lawyer comes on, and gets moderated flamebait.
I guess wanna-be legal information is better than the real stuff.
You do realize that 200 years ago, no one had indoor plumbing, right? Man, I wish my ancestors were here to tell you spoiled kids about the conditions of the outhouses they had to use.
Nice argument. My father used to use the same one when I was a kid. "Napolean conquered all of Europe without a bicycle, so why do you need one?" You could use that argument to justify taking away pretty much anything. 1000 years ago, no one had guns/healthcare/medicine/freedom from slavery/etc. Man, I wish my ancestors were here to tell you spoiled kids...
You know, you don't HAVE to travel at all. It is something you are choosing to do. The DHS should just restrict our right to travel and eliminate all these pesky conditions.
And there is no right to have any carry on luggage at all. Would you be okay with that as well? No book, no magazine, no Ipod, no laptop? Stare at the seatback in front of you for 8 hours.
Because it is only a matter of time when they uncover a plot to blow up airplanes with explosives hidden in a hollowed out book.
Just looking forward to the time when I will be able to buy a "DHS approved" copy of Time magazine on the plane for $20.
The vast majority of crimes associated with drugs comes from their illegality. If they weren't illegal, those crimes would not occur. No need to shoot the competing dealer down the street if drugs can be purchased at the local liquor store. No need to steal to support your habit if drugs are much much cheaper because the criminal element has been eliminated in the production and distribution of drugs.
"Oh and if you truly believe everyone has the right to be free you should first be willing to grant that freedom to others right? Okay, grant me my freedom of killing you. If you are willing to grant me that freedom, I will grant you yours. "
How about granting me the freedom to call you an idiot for the worst. analogy. ever.
While he didn't commit manslaughter as you said, he did commit a crime. He did not report the accident in a timely manner to the local law enforcement agency. This delay is illegal because then the authorities did not have the opportunity to verify whether or not Cheney was inebriated at the time of the shooting. If he had been, he could be subject to prosecution. Failure to report the shooting was a crime, but that fact has been swept under the rug in every report you read about the incident.
The bias towards the software company is getting pretty thick around here. Regardless of the dispute the city and the company, the innocent people who have had their cars seized without due process should be the first concern here. The fact that the company used those cars as hostages to get the city to pay, I feel, is reprehensible. They should have released those cars first, then shut down the garage, thereby only hurting the parties involved in the dispute, not innocent third parties.
What contract did the people who parked their cars there sign? Did it have a provision saying that their cars are subject to seizure by a software vendor who has a dispute with the city?
Given the vast size of the Universe and the vast number of planets out there, even with an infintessimal chance of life existing on any given planet, there is likely at least a few other planets with life.
But I agree that it is unlikely that life is "very common." But there is a big difference between very common and none.
I wasn't aware that cellphones were stopping a mass dieoff and possible extinction of our species. Pretty powerful little devices.
Don't you young punks watch Saved by the Bell anymore?
You will learn fairly quickly that 18 is young. Very young.
1989? You act like that was a long time ago. That ride was built in 1977.

So, you don't drive then?

Of course, since you have never had a 2 hour wait, all the rest of us who have had 2 hour and longer waits are just talking out of our ass, right?

Is that the country where everyone bought Macs?

" FinalFantasy-WHATEVER"
Watch out or you just might invoke the wrath of all the Final Fantasy fanbois out there, and we will never hear the end of it.
Just remember to lift your feet in event of a front end collision! Got a '71 myself...
There was no "War on Drugs" 50 years ago. That was a substantial change and expansion in police powers.
