Indeed, try news sites, you'll notice they are cut off at least a month or two, while other sites (non-news) seemed to have no problem doing daily updates. Some of the news sites were being archived at least 4 times a day, then just happened to be cut off. Then just happened to start right back on 9/11. Just a coincidence? heh
Go ahead and search it yourself, everything is deleted before 9/11 up to a month or two. Certain articles and websites end up being deleted too. And it's not because it wasn't archived, it was there before. It's quite interesting.
Makes me wonder who really runs archive.org..
In Konqueror, the URL can be spoofed, however, when I try to use the SSL paypal.com, a warning pops up that the certificate does not match (The IP address of the host www.paypal.com does not match the certificate it was issued too).
At least Konqueror gives me a warning, Firefox doesn't care:P

Then you're simply not looking hard enough. There are plenty of companies offering notebooks for sale without Windows. It may not be sub $500 for the newer notebooks, but they're hell of a lot cheaper than the brandname notebooks with Windows loaded on. (You can even buy the same laptops Alienware uses for half the price, just without the paint coating & Windows Alienware charges for)
"Now, most people use Windows or Mac for their primary desktop. Hardly any users that buy their computers at Walmart are running Linux on their main machine. So what are they going to do with this laptop? It's not really compatible with their standard machine."
Because they have choice? If they don't want to buy the desktop running Linux, they can simply get the one running Windows. How hard is that? As for me, it's very compatible and it's not really a bad laptop either from what I've seen. Though, I'm not going to buy it since their are better notebooks to use with Linux:)
"My best guess is that the hardware is basic enough that they can probably install Win98 on it with very little trouble. This is a computer for software license violaters, in that case."
Have you even bothered looking at the specs on these laptops? Are you just that stupid? This isn't a 200mhz old laptop. And how is it a computer for software license violators? Anyone that wants to install pirated software on it should know more than enough where to get real notebooks and desktops without having to pay the MS or brand name tax. You're just sad if you want to install pirated Windows on this thing, and it's not even funny. I'm surprised this post has been marked "Interesting".
Why? If people can do that, I'm sure they know they can order PC's and Notebooks without anything loaded on to it (Which I have done plenty of times), without any MS tax on it.
If you have to go to Walmart to pull this off just to load pirated Windows on it, then you are just sad, it's not even funny.
Anything that sends data about the computer you are using is a serious breach of security and is not to be trusted, especially without the users knowledge or permission. This is more like a trojan. Trusted Computing is simply not really trustable when my personal computer & software collection data is being sent out over the network to some computer I AM supposed to trust because they said so.. mmm hmm.. I can already imagine cops pulling people over for blackmarket chips and sending them off to jail as if they were carrying drugs...
There are, on the otherhand, some good features which TCG seems like it could help in, but as Linus said, as long as it is developed for the interest and benefit of the user. But as of this moment, it's not.
So basically we are going through the 80's once again with terminals and central computers, that's just wonderful. It failed the first time and it's not going to work a second time around.
I'm starting to believe you never used Gentoo before and just talking straight out of your ass. I guess you knew you were going to get flamed over this, but oh well.
This is just my laptop. I have a ~x86 server running Gentoo for almost a full year now and a PPC server running for half a year.
Gentoo is as good as any Slack/Debian/Fedora box, it's all the same and depends on what crap you end up putting on it. There are plenty of companies running Gentoo in the production environment with great success.
"Its about as stable as Windows98 in that it feels untested with no QA is done for a production environment. Maybe Gentoo has improved since I used it back in 2002. I dont know."
It is? It's about as stable as using Freebsd in my opinion. One of my uptimes on one of my gentoo boxes is at 62 days and holding (They day I've installed Gentoo on that box). No crashes, no bugs except for using Amarok-cvs (but that's pretty obvious why Amarok would crash from time to time):)
"If I were an admin I would stay far away from Gentoo as possible and I am supprised your server is even running without constant crashes or bugs."
These same bugs and constant crashes are going to be shared over with other distributions, any fixes will obviously be updated in Gentoo just like any other distribution. It's not like Debian or Redhat is going to hide any fixes from anyone using Slack or Gentoo. And there's a reason why Gentoo uses the term "Stable" and "Unstable" in Portage.
Linux is a real OS and BSD's end up having to use a Linux "Emulator" to run half the software anyways (not that I'm bashing BSD, I love Freebsd, hehe). So does that make FreeBSD or OSX (for using OSS software) crappy? No.
I just hope Solaris doesn't end up being competition to opensouce, Linux or BSD's (Some recent articles are claiming so) but instead just provides to the community like using either Linux or Freebsd, both providing the same tools to use and all of them having their uses.
I say make em. Is it evil? maybe. The more spy/malware on the net, the more ways people will develop to counter all the crapware, be more aware of where they visit, and make sure the right tools are being used.
The more the community knows about exploits, the better, instead of having company X knowing a secret exploit that no one even knows about for years at a time and using it to there advantage.
Have you been on irc lately? Take a look at how many shells are using the .us and .info domain. Plenty.

Uhh, did you even look? They were crawling websites quite a bit before 9/11, daily, then all of the sudden 2-3 months end up missing.
I get modded troll for this? Go figure. Why don't you guys look for your damn self?

They should have done a better job at protecting their secrets in the first place.

What kind of computer do you have? Azureus takes at the most (That I've seen) 80mb of RAM for me, even with a lot of stuff downloading.
They do, but it's usually a commercial product.
Or it could just be someone running an OSX theme in KDE or Gnome! Suckers :P
Holy crap! I can't believe someone submitted a bug report like that. I don't even have 1/10th of that in my make.conf for Gentoo :p
What about MUTE?
http://mute-net.sourceforge.net/
uhh, forums.gentoo.org is working fine for me.
What makes this any different from say... Using Slackware and then compiling KDE, Xorg, Gnome all from source?
