I would be more carefull than to simply assume something is "secure". your machine may be as secure as you know how to make it, but to think of it as secure is just tempting fate. security is an ongoing matter, especially if your machine is actually meant to be doing something, like handling mail, acting as a web server, etc. I have faith that next month, or the month after, or the month after that another remote linux exploit is going to be found. This exploit quite likely will not be initially posted to bugtraq and may be exploited in the wild for some time before it is found and fixed. Apart from that, your security violation is more likely to be from an employee, than from an outside attacker. A completely secure machine is a nice idea, but it is not reality.
(Sorry for the rambling post, this is just a collection of brain farts)
You are right, that could be a problem. Perhaps having a seperate IRC network for the IM, or having the client connect to whichever IRC networks you wish and do a WHOIS on the person you are looking for, or just always be on one IRC network. there should be tons of people to talk to on a decent IRC net anyhow. Anyway, those are the only ideas I can think of right now, I'm rather tired and my brain is giving out, so pleaase forgive me.
Could this not all be implemented on top of the existing IRC protocol? I'm sorry if I'm all wrong about IM's, I haven't really had much experience other than "Hrrm, someone's been touching *my* work computer, in *my* cubicle, hrrm, what's this funny thing in the task bar, AAAAAAAAAAARGH!! AOL!! KILL IT, KILL IT!!! DIEDIEDIEDIEDIEDIE!!!!" (yes we run win9x, it's company policy, I have no choice) but enough digressing. Could not a slightly modified network of IRC servers essentially duplicate all the features of an IM? For instance seeing if they are online, file transfer, video conferencing could easily be added via DCC or something like that. Why must we reinvent the wheel when we already have a protocol which can be modified to suit? of course I could be completely wrong, so flame away. ----------------------
silvio's going to shoot me for putting this up on slashdot. however, for those interested in virus development upon unix, have a look at unix-virus.beergrave.net. it's mainly dealt with linux and freebsd techniques, however sparc/solaris has been discussed. The charter has recently been revised, so it now includes worms as well as viruses. check out virus.beergrave.net, or send a message to majordomo@virus.beergrave.net with 'subscribe unix-virus' in the body

It's good to see some people here recommending ovms!, I would recommend anyone with an old alpha or vax to try the openvms hobbyist program. Because, well, let's face it, sometimes unix can get a little bit, err, boring. old. learned. done. or maybe that is just me. further information on the OpenVMS hobbyist program can be found at http://www.montagar.com/hobbyist/ and if I know HTML like I hope I do OpenVMS Hobbyist Program

Not sure what's happening in canada. But here in Australa, the queen has not been thought of as the leader for a rather long time. In fact, next month australia is having a referendum on wether or not to cut all ties to the monarchy, and to form a republic. And the funny thing, is that the monarchist's aren't even defending the queen herself as a leader (or rather, head of state) but rather that we don't need change, and that if we do become a republic, we'll suddenly be like indonesia and mass riots and instability and fun stuff like that will occur, the other favourite tactic is that it is all a Big Plot By The Government (woooooooohhh).
Sometimes I think the real reason australia stays in the commonwealth is so we can trounce all the other countries at the commonwealth games every four years.
Anyone got a mirror of this? I got it up to where it says "Compact Disc Surprise" after the adolf hitler part. now it looks like it's been removed, golly, wonder why?

err, of course, for the IM/ICQQ user, this
would require a modified GUI client with lots
of pretty buttons and so forth, oops

Yes, I am a 70 year old woman from Antartica making over 150,000 US$ a year, really!
Uh oh,

Dvorak used the word "hacker" in the context of "cracker"
I can hear it now
the fists beating loudly against the chests of all
self righteous slashdotters out there.
just quit it, it's annoying, yes we all know that
they mean "cracker" it's been debated numerous times
we don't need to be reminded again
please?
