I find FireFox to be slower than IE. Let me load it up now and see how long it takes to load... approximately 10 seconds. Now, on my virtual PC, let's see how long IE takes to load up... under 2 seconds. Exactly. Until FireFox can be as quick-loading as IE, I'm not going to use it. That time difference is the most annoying thing about FireFox, as I'd use it over IE if it could just do what IE does best - a very lightweight, fast browser.
Based on what you've said, it seems to me that there really is no compelling reason for you to switch, so I won't attempt to proselytise you (too much!;)), but just out of interest, what version of Firefox was this? On my machine, initial start of Firefox 1.0 takes about 5 seconds. After that, opening a new Firefox window (not something I do very often, as I always use tabs) takes, literally, an eyeblink - if there's any difference between it and IE, I can't notice it. I seem to recall that earlier versions of FF were much slower, though...
If you start Firefox and have that "Default profile in use blah blah" (I thought they were getting rid of this...?) then go into your Firefox profile and remove the parent.lock file [I'm not at a Windows box right now, but I think it's in Documents and Settings//Application Data(?)/Mozilla/Firefox/]. Firefox should then be able to start, with your default profile, without a hitch.
Yes, this is fully in accordance with Microsoft's mindset - whenever a new pie appears in the horizon (a floating pie lol wtf?!) Microsoft cannot stand not having a piece of it. To be honest, I think the fact that they cannot have all of it rankles them. I hate to sound like a typical anti-M$ "slashbot", but whenever I think of adjectives for Microsoft's whole corporate mindset, the only ones I can think of are "broken" and "diseased".
Various advantages of tabbed browsing have been expounded above, but for me the most interesting one is that I can flick to any one of my open tabs without touching the keyboard, or navigating down to the Taskbar - in fact, without moving my mouse at all! Check out the "rocker" feature in the All-in-one-Gestures extension (a simply indispensable extension, in my opinion) for more information!
(-1, OffTopic), but I recall you earlier expressed some interest in slashdotgrab.pl (which I mentioned as an AC, before I joined up a few days back:)), the script for downloading and formatting slashdot comments and marking the ones you've already "read". If you want to check it out, I'm happy to put it up somewhere if someone can point me to some free, easy hosting that can survive a slashdotting:)
Cheers,
Si
Unfortunately, I don't think it's for want of trying: I'm sure the efforts to import Microsoft Word docs are substantial, but the closed-ness (and indeed, the actual deliberate obfuscation, according to some sources) means a large amount of work nets little gain. Other closed proprietary formats will pose similar challenges.
Hi there -
I'm the original anonymous coward:)
I don't really have anywhere to host it, but if you remove the underscore from my username and add "at a certain webmail host involving the word "hot" " to the end, that's my e-mail address. Drop me an e-mail and I'll be happy to send it to you, to do with as you wish.
Cheers,
Si.
