I love the history and tab completion features of BASH. It works perfect on any Linux box I sit down at, and when it is put on a Sun box it makes life so much better. I would like to take advantage of the fact that Sun packages KSH with the OS, but I have found that none of the usability features are pre-configured. Even the teacher of a sys admin class had trouble setting it up. What gives?
and software would create a fake persona (the software is already there, check freshmeat), auto-register, and log the user into the page. This would be seamless for the user.
Not only would this skip the annoyance, it would fill up the Times database with imaginary people.
I have plans for a PIM that works on the desktop and palmtop. With a linux handheld I can write the same back end and change a few things (display, interaction) on the front end. I CANNOT do that on the 3COM or windows products as easily. Realize that PalmOS HAS NO FILESYSTEM accesible by programs. None, notta, all they have is executables and databases. No way to use fils system hiearchy to your advantage.
I want to write my programs in mature, free, multi machine, multi operating system languages.
Just because the TOS says they can terminate an account for no reason doesn't give them a liscense to discriminate. I have an "at-will" employment contract, but they still can't fire me because of my religion, skin color, etc.
Contact resistance is the problem here. Yes, making the surfaces "flatter" on the macroscopic level (.0005") will help, but there are still microscopic variations in surface height. You don't get enough ACTUAL contact. This is why you use a thermal grease or paste. Ideally you have a layer just thick enough to fill the gaps. Lapping the surfaces may help a little, but without that grease you are not going to get very far.
ViaVoice is NOT free as in FREE beer. Heck, I don't think they would even qualify as Open Source. At least that's what you get by looking at their webpages.
Why everybody using it in apps (Can you say GNOME?) when IBM hasn't clarified this?
They SHOULD be monitoring the internet for comments on thier products. They SHOULD say, HEY! here is another market! And they should slap a model with a 2.5" HDD and Linux bundled and sell it for $199!
I've used VB too, think rather highly of it, and would be using it right now if it was free (beer and speech) and worked on unix and macs.
As it's not, I've been learning Python. It's about as close as you are going to get to Basic. Go out and jump on it. I also recommend wxPython, a graphics system for it.
The useability rules on your site is great, but how do we get sites that have the information or product we want or need to give it to us in a more usable manner?
You should have to ASK your ISP to be allowed to set up a server. The vast majority of users never will, drastically reducing the number of unsecured machines, and reducing attacks such as DDoS.
Something I would like to see is ISP's block ALL incoming TCP/IP packets (incoming with the SYN bit set) unless the customer requests otherwise. It would seem to me that only servers need incoming TCP/IP connections. Am I missing something here?
It doesn't sound like we ARE focusing on how it was done. I haven't seen many really lucid converstations on these issues.
I've been reading many articles today, as well as listening to the radio. All I can tell is that it is a distrubited attack, and it SOUNDS like normal http requests were used.
I have several questions:
Were the IP's spoofed? I suspect they were, to make filtering harder. (However, that does require root access.)
Were full port 80 requests made? What about half-open SYNs? Was only the main page pounded on, or was the attack across the web site?
Did administrators of other systems try to track down their boxes if they were used in the attack?
The ability for a group of people to manage and understand a large interacting group of computers depends on organization.
That can mean any of the following and more:
Organized, color coded cabling.
Documented and correctly written/etc/init.d scripts.
Keeping patches up to date.
Etc.
You need to see that these type of things happen if you are going to keep things working smoothly. If it means ISO9000, then do it. If it means a 5 page set of guidelines, by all means, DO IT!

What if someone created a website, say, www.nytimesneedstogrowup.com and when someone wanted to go to:
5 78 _00.html
www.nytimes.com/cnet/CNET_0_4_4347578_00.html
They would type in:
www.nytimesneedstogrowup.com/cnet/CNET_0_4_4347

I want ease of programming and compatability.

Here's my input:
Yank the posts that copied the original Microsoft documents. They clearly own the copyrights, and that is a reasonable request.
As for the links and the comments about the EULA, tough nouggies, theose are protected free speech, copyright the original posters.

Why everybody using it in apps (Can you say GNOME?) when IBM hasn't clarified this?
-Jeff
Did you actually go and read the FAQ or the law itself?
The largest part isn't opening source code, it is opening the communication formats to allow for other companies to compete.
While there is a chance for the source to "fall into the public" I'm sure companies could get reasonable reassurances in this area.
This legislation is well thought out. I suggest you go read it.
-Jeff
Does anybody know if these will stick? I heard on Slashdot a while ago that the courts struck down some non-compete clauses.

Right cause, wrong effect.
This is the new economy, www.cluetrain.org and all that.

I mean, I hope they get a clue!

*I want it to be free (as in free beer)
*I want ink that won't gunk up my fingers
*I want it where I am, not in a box on the street, but on my desk.
*I want more comics.
That would help me read it. The more I stay away from the computer, the healther my hands are.

Security should be the default.

You can get all that groovy data here:
U.S. Gazetteer Place and Zipcode Files
They have zip codes, towns, locations, populations, and the file sizes are small and straight text. No need for 2+ gigs of TIGER information.
