  1. Contradictory? on Second Black Hole at the Center of the Milky Way · · Score: 3, Interesting

I thought that the goin theory was that at the center of each galaxy lay a black hole, which created the "spiral" effect (such as the one that we see in the Milky Way's "arms"). Does this contradict current knowledge, or is our galaxy just a fluke?

  2. Well, then on Microsoft Says Firefox Not a Threat to IE · · Score: 3, Interesting

Then Microsoft appears to be wrong. While it's likely true that Internet Explorer is no less secure than Firefox (come on, professional coders at Microsoft probably know what they're doing), the fact is that the Mozilla Project is better at getting fixes. When there was a security vulnerability in Firefox 0.9.3 (I believe) a few months ago, the patch was released within a few short hours. Flaws in Internet Explorer often run rampant for days, sometimes weeks. So while Internet Explorer's code may be no less secure, it is effectively the weaker browser. Saying that Firefox poses no threat to Microsoft is either naive, egotistical, or idiotic.

  3. Re:Not to mobiles, though on BT to Offer Free Internet Calls · · Score: 1

I didn't mean to imply that telephone lines are useless- far from it, they don't run out of batteries (most of the time), don't have static-y reception all the time, and are very useful in themselves. My point was that in an emergency (let's say a fire), it might be difficult to get to a landline phone, where a cellphone would be in a pocket, for example. Also, in an earthquake (I'm in San Diego, I have to mention Earthquakes!) telephone lines go down, but cell towers are usually reliable. I didn't mean to start an argument over which is better, since cellphones and landlines both definitely have their strong points.

Hmm, last I check through almost every major emergency the phone lines are about the last thing to go out, heck even power loss doesn't effect corded telephones. Cell Phones while improving, simply don't have the same reputation.

Power loss doesn't really effect cell phones, either. Hell, there could be a complete cable, phone and power outage at your house but your cell phone would still have reception. I'd think that they'd have the best reputation!

  5. This is great! on Half-Life 2 Street Date · · Score: 1

This system will work well! After XBox's all die and overheat from overuse (no comment on Microsoft's engineering), people will now be able to come back to their trusty computers and play Half Life 2! Although, I think that there would be a greater reaction to the it's-gonna-be-damned-awesome HL2 if Valve waited, until, say December 1st, when the novelty of Halo 2 has worn off and people are ready for something new.

Are you suggesting that since people are "still in denial about the resulting effects", the research should stop? People will eventually realize what the work has done, but it must be completed before it can have any effects.

  12. Re:Electronic Voting == Trouble on Avi Rubin and More on Electronic Voting · · Score: 1

non-open source electronic voting is a dangerous situation.

Although I support open source as much as the next guy, I think that making the source code widely available in a situation such as the presidential election is far more dangerous than having it closed source. The thing is, if a non-company-affiliated programmer sees a security flaw that no one else does (possible, but not that likely), this one anonymous person could, for example, change votes and not be suspect at all. I'm not sure that there is any way to completely secure electronic voting machines, but I'm confident that making them open source poses a greater risk than help.
