    no one is preventing someone from releasing binary only drivers (note nVidia). What they are trying to do, is prevent people from presenting binary-only drivers as "Linus supported" when in reality they are not.

    There is a mechanism for this. Either work with it, or do not.

    Think of it this way: What would Microsoft do if someone started signing their WindowsXP modem drivers as Microsoft HCL Certified without Microsoft's permission/approval? This is no different.

    Which wouldn't work, because the compiler would still insert the whole string as a static entity into the resulting object code.

    A sufficiently advanced inlining compiler might not, but I don't think something of that sophistication exists yet (or Itanium wouldn't be called Itanic).

    Nevermind that the Bible in any form doesn't contain *ANYTHING* that purports to be Christ's own words. You take it as "gospel" that Christ though so, through the words of his disciples.

    Yea, some of us do crazy things like release version 2.1-stable, and 2.2-unstable which might eventually become 2.2-stable, or might evolve into 3.0-stable depending on feature set. :-)

    Developers are a crazy bunch.

    Right, I have time to read an 800 page configuration guide. Personally, I prefer a system that's locked down to start, is easy to get going, and is scalable. Everything that sendmail is not (or wasn't under 8.x). ;-)

    I've used sendmail, and I've used postfix. I definitely prefer postfix. I didn't think I would, I had a serious sendmail bias a few months ago, but I'm a convert. PGSQL support did it for me, I think.

    He meant for clients, not server config. The typical:

    system("/usr/bin/sendmail -m user@host.tld");

    Is unchanged when migrating to postfix. The backend, however, has some extremely significant differences.

    You weren't trolled, you just didn't understand his argument correctly.

    Why? You're the idiot (no personal offense intended) who built an entire product line around an encumbered technology. Who's fault is that?

    That's like moving into someone's summer home while they're away at their winter home, and bitching when you have to move out when they come back in June.

    Okay, bad analogy, but still. It's not *MY* fault you infringed on my patents 10 years ago, but I'm gonna do something about it now, and it's called greed. Sorry, human nature. :-)

    oh come on. Name me *ONE* scsi disk since scsi was invented that couldn't be read today? IDE? damn, the first IDE drive I ever had, purchased in 1988 STILL works.

    Serial-ATA can still read ATA drives with a simple adapter. Disk compatibility isn't going away anytime soon. Especially SCSI.

    Bind 8.2 (maybe 8.0, not sure) had some serious nasty exploits. I know, I got nailed by 'em. But there were patches available like 5 or 6 days later, none of this 30 day - 6 month crap Microsoft gives us.

    No, because any decent hospital is going to put you on a managable payment plan that won't kill you. Probably interest free. Bankruptcy is NEVER in the creditor's best interest.

    IIRC, defaulting on a hospital bill won't end up on your credit report. Not sure how true this is or if it's some pernicious urban legend...

    APC and others are now selling TCP/IP based KVM's that can help mitigate some problems. APC even has power switches that you can remotely reboot. I'm sure there are security concerns, but they're designing half the hardware for these colo's, and remote management is an important thing for some clients. Not every colo has 24x7 access that's easy to use of doesn't depend on that guy in your IT department who just went on a 3 week African safari.

    Yeah, that was me.

    I lived under a semi-active AFB for a while, and let me tell you, a 747 has *NOTHING* on a C5 galaxy hanging 100' above your bedroom at 3AM on a Sunday.

    I could sleep on jet engine. :-) The only thing that prevents me from sleeping gate to gate is the pressure changes.

    While I don't disagree with you on your C/free example, I tend to disagree with you specifically on auto_ptr. It's billed to newbies, experts, and everyone in between as a panacea, when indeed it has pitfalls to trap the unwary.

    I think can agree that references are by far a much better mechanism for the majority of problems pointers try to solve. :-)

    Why can't we make one? I can understand why Linux and other kernel developers would be LOATHE to have a binary API (considering their already public stance on this issue), but what's prevent the OSS community from providing one? Hmm?

    Nothing. Somewhat like what nVidia does with their driver. At least one vendor has figured out this problem.
