I agree, number one is valid English. Number two might be a bit clumsy, but is valid. I had to re-read it a couple of times: I think I was expecting "to fall" rather than "to falling". The third one is debatable, but I would tend to think it bad. "pseud" might be a valid word for people who visit chat rooms, but elsewhere it's very uncommon. Jon is writing to a bigger audience, so slang is not a good idea. Or, he's just being lazy by not writing the whole word, which is also bad.

  3. DANGER: ignorant moderators on the loose on ABC Ads Target Answering Machines? · · Score: 1

What idiot moderated the parent to this thread down as "off-topic"? If the fool had read the story, they would have seen that the last sentence read "(course the only show on ABC I actually watch is Who's Line is it Anyway, but since Comedy Central airs the much funnier sans-drew English version several times a day anyway, I don't consider that a huge loss either). "

The parent thread discusses the English version. The parent thread discusses the ABC version. The main thrust of the story is about telemarketers, but the story also opens up other discussions too.

So moderate me down too. Ignorant pigs!

Do you feel good now that you've pointlessly flamed somedbody - and sounded condescending and like a complete snob in the process? Quite pathetic aren't you?

You might not have liked it, or thought it was a quality film, but don't bash others who did. Everybody enjoys different things. One of my favourite films this year was "Eyes Wide Shut", but that got really hammered some people. So what?

Express your opinion, but it's not necessary to put somebody else down in the process. I happen to think that it was a quality film. I also think that Hong Kong turns out far more crappy action films than good.

  6. Americans don't speak english on Ask Slashdot: Comp-Sci Graduate Schools · · Score: 1

If you used a style of writing that wasn't so lazy then people might have less difficulty understanding you. Writing in a manner similar to the way you speak isn't a good idea: people speak English differently all over the word (normally more in line with the British than Americans), and a lot of detail that is conveyed in speech is lost. But I don't need to tell you that.

As an American - a supposition on my part - you don't have any right to tell somebody how to speak English. English being the language of the English, the people from England. See the Oxford English Dictionary (British Edition) for any queries concerning the language, including pronunciation.

    Blime' guv'nor! I'm a pompous twat tonight, in-I?! ;)
