OK, if we're REALLY going to nitpick, I'm pretty sure they didn't speed away in a station wagon. Didn't the T2 latch onto the trunk of the car and try to get in through the rear window? I think they pick up the station wagon later.
Anyway, what does it matter, even with all their effort the world nonetheless buys the farm in T3...
Cronenberg's The Fly is good and Goldblum gives a terrific performance, but the movie has some serious flaws (not least of which is too much of a dependence on the gross out factor).
Now John Carpenter's The Thing, on the other hand...
