I manage a Helpdesk at a Midwestern University. We have a program where we checkout laptop computers to students for their use on a week-by-week basis. We buy Dell equipmen, and that equipment has Computrace LoJack for Laptops by Absolute Software Corporation installed. We had one of our laptops stolen from a student about a year ago. Knowing the chances for recovery were probably very low, we 'wrote it off.' Much to our surprise, the laptop was returned to us yesterday by the student from which it had been stolen! It had been returned to the student by the local police, who recovered it during one of their investigations. From the Absolute folks: "We had a call from a fine citizen that responded to a pop up that we had installed on this stolen computer, your Dell 510."
So, in this case, it worked!! I don't know if Absolute has Computrace for Linux or not, but at this point I would certainly recommend this company and its product.
