Having had my first major battle last year with a DRM CD (EMI, not Sony) and despite the best efforts of their tech support staff still not being able to copy the CD so I could listen to it on my MP3 player I decided that I WILL NOT BUY DRM CD's AGAIN. I hope the pigopolists are reading this! DRM is killing the the CD market. As I list to 90% of my music on the train each comute, if I can't copy the CD to MP3 that I don't want to know.
The EMI answer was to change my MP3 player to something that would use Microsofts WMP v10 ! Yeah, right, thats likely too.
Back in 1980-82, I worked for GEC Traction at Trafford Park, Manchester. We had an implemented design to use electro-restive breaking in diesel/electric trains, which we added to full electric trains. We then advanced this in to use with trams and (if memory serves) we looked at putting it on duel-fuel buses. This is back in 1982, so I think this predates this patent.
Where was the oligatory "no animals were hurt in these clips" caption? Personally, I think putting snakes up high trees, cages, wires, etc and telling them "fly, or else.." is sort of cruelty.
But, darn, they are snakes. Throw them higher.
Somewhere, sometime, a lemming will learn to fly. Is this related?
The real issue of substance is whether TT really has a case, not in US law, but under EU law. We simply don't know this until someone challenges them. TT have been very clever in pitching their cost per trade metric well below the pain threshold, so it's cheaper to pay TT then take it to court. As its not challenged, there are no papers to make public, and TT can request as part of the agreement that the agreement terms and conditions are confidential.
There is a much larger issue at stake, as this thread points out. Whether ideas can be patented, and just what legal regime a patent in the US for an idea would be fought under when EU doesn't (yet) recognise the patenting of ideas.
... Yet another standard that can confuse just about everyone.
"You have a problem on the server, wait thats written in JSON, we only do XML. The JSON developer is on vacation."
I tried to sell some software to database stuff to the EDS group in charge of the tax system (based in Telford, England). I kid you not. We asked if they has an ERD of the database. "Whats an ERD?" we got back.
You kn ow a database design. How do you design the database? "Well Dave here gets on the console and types SQL statements in to Oracle". On the test system, right? "no, direct in to live".
We got up and left. There is no way I am going to be front page news for my software taking down the live tax system in the UK!

Is this related to http://science.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=05/08/1 7/224231&tid=99&tid=14/? I think we should be told.
