All the user needs to remember is the phrase and the rules to make it complex. And the phrase can be something VERY easy to remember like "my daughter was born in march" which turns into "mydAught3rwAsbOrnInmArch"..
It produces a complex, easy to remember password.
For nerds like me and most of the people here this is trivial. But for most people it isn't. I once explained a simple password technique that used a regular password with one letter that changed based on the first letter of the website name. I was amazed at how many people (regular users of the internet) found this difficult.
There is a conflict of interest when the camera company is given 50% of of the fine. It would be like paying a bonus to cops based on the number of tickets that they write.
We need Wikileaks and others like them to tell the truth to the American people. What good is a democracy if the voters are kept ignorant of the government’s actions?
The government routinely lies to us. How many times have there been news reports about attacking insurgents only to later find out that it was a wedding that was bombed? The government never acknowledges the truth until it is widely reported. Do you remember the story of Pat Tillman?
The vast majority of information that is classified is classified to keep the Americans from finding out about it, not because it would strengthen our enemies. They government tries to create the impression that we are the good guys; that we only attack terrorists; that our attacks are “surgical” and that killings of innocents are rare. The reality is quite different. How do you minimize “collateral damage” when dropping a 2000 lb. bomb?
I’m not blaming the soldiers here. I’m blaming the government that lied us into war.
I'd like to know more about this BBS. How many incoming lines did it have? What modem speeds did it support? What topics did it cover?
Will the OP put the BBS (or a copy of it) back on line (perhaps in read only mode)? I'm not sure how easy this would be to do but it would be cool if it were possible. Or perhaps just the text of the messages.
Several years ago I had to give a fingerprint to renew my drivers license. I seems clear that even without a National ID the government has plenty of identifying information on all of us. If the FBI (or other agency) asked the DMV for my info, surely the sate would give it to them.
Also if someone from the government went to this company and demanded the fingerprint information ( and the software / hardware to process it) how many companies would refuse them? Especially if they used the secret magic word (terrorism).
Now on one hand I don't trust the government any farther than I can spit a rat. On the other hand I don't know of anyone being dragged off and falsely accused by the government. That doesn't prove it doesn't happen; just that I haven't seen it.
There seem to be very few people in this country who give a shit about objective, responsible journalism.
There seems to be very little high quality unbiased news reporting done.
Example when a politician claims "Bush kept us safe from terrorism", isn't the interviewer obliged to point out that, in fact, the 9-11 attacks happened on Bush's watch.
Do a rough calculation of the percentage that the warranty costs vs. the value of the item. Then make an estimate of the probability that the item will need repair during the period of the extended warranty (say year 2 and 3) of a 3 year extended warranty. This often looks like a toss up.
Add to that the fact of depreciation. The computer you pay $1100 for today will be worth $100 in 5 years. In this example it drops in value about $200 per year.
Add to that the hassle in getting a warranty repair ( your time involved in finding your paperwork, getting the warranty company to actually honor the warranty, your own willingness to persist in getting the repairs completed, etc).
It almost always turns out that you would be better off saving the warranty money in a replacement account that you could use when some item failed.
When I get the "You need to buy the extended warranty" pitch I look incredulously at the salesman and ask, "Are you telling me this is no good?".
The vast majority of these extended warranties are just plain rip offs.
Microsoft gives the schools free software and Russian students learn to use it. They get the Microsoft propaganda (Lower TCO, innovative, how easy is is to do... etc). In a few years these students are the experts and will be working in government, industry and where ever. When they are asked how to solve a problem they will usually recommend Microsoft because that is what they know. Now had they been trained on OSS they would recommend that.
This is a quite a bargain for Microsoft, even if they give the schools free software forever. If it works for them a large part of Russia will be using and paying for Microsoft software, just like here.
5000 KWH @ 10 cents per kwh = $500.
I know the 10 cents per kwh doesnt apply to industrial use or in the countries where computers are made. Even so it makes me skeptical of the 5000 KWH to produce a computer.
We can buy a complete computer for less than $500. When you consider the additional costs of making a computer (labor, engineering labor, materials, shipping, sales costs, money paid to various governments etc.) it is hard to believe 5000 KWH estimate.
Let's sic Sheriff Joe on the wall street bankers.

I preferred DOS and Desqview to windows 3.1.

But what will China do if we are unable or unwilling to pay our debt?

The BBS was The New Age Connection In Riverside Ca. The software changed over the years. It started as PC Board, then GAP then Major BBS.
The topic was alternative religions, but mostly it was a place where people hung out.
Thanks for the links to the BBS documentary. I used to be a sysop and it brought back a lot of memories.
At the risk of stating the obvious, do the math.
