    Sure you can.

    3. Search for and download 'Windows XP Professional Corporate' and 'WGA killer'

True. But if you say something the editors don't like, you can get 'bitchslapped' -- they run a script which mods a whole bunch of your posts to -1 so that you end up with negative karma. In essence, all your posts start out as -1. Still not the same as not being able to post -- unless they decide to ban your IP. But you have to do something pretty egregious to get bitchslapped or banned.

Nope. They do affect a person's karma. They don't get meta-modded either. That's why they get used. If someone has a vendetta against you because you said something mean about their favorite toy or their favorite superhero or whatever and they have mod points, they can mod you down by modding you overrated, but metamods can't "fix" it, because under and overrated are not subject to metamod. So, the person with the vendetta can hurt your karma, but no one can hurt theirs for moderation abuse.

Your analogy completely breaks down; buggy whip manufacturers went out business because demand vanished. Here, demand isn't vanishing.

    Except that:

    • not everyone who pirates content ends up not paying for it
    • not all content that is pirated is available by purchasing it
    • not all who pirate would actually purchase the content anyway

I mean, unless the "lost to piracy" claims are figuring in these factors, then they're simply dead flat wrong.

    Could this work?

No. "Fair Use" says that it's alright to use 30 seconds provided that it is used for the 'purposes of critique' or something like that. The basic idea is that it must be used as part of an original copyrighted work and that there is 'value added' in that copyrighted work.

    So the answer is 'no'.

'The dock' has been part of the Macintosh OS and user interface since its introduction in 1984. There have been plenty of imitators, such as the GNOME System Notification Area and The Windows 9x System Tray and the 'dock area' in so many other environments -- KDE, NeXTStep, OpenStep/GNUStep, XFCE, CDE, etc., but I don't think any of them predate the Mac's 'dock'.
