Does your 'average' user even know that most 'mechanical' slot machines are computer-driven? Many posters on this forum assumed that the slot machines were video slot machines! The article doesn't even say that.

My point is this: having played slot machines before, they don't count credits in terms of '$', but in terms of 'points'. Some slot machines really do give you 10 credits (pulls) for $1 (these are called 'dime' slots).

What are you, 12? It seems they've been announcing desktops are dying almost every year since laptops first hit the scene.

The bottom-line is this: yes, the price premium on laptops has dwindled some. No, it hasn't disappeared. Yes, laptops still sacrifice performance for mobility. And, yes, many people are still willing (and sometimes are even required) to sacrifice mobility for power. And, yes, a lot of people, including me, hate laptop screens, laptop keyboards, and, yes, despite statements to the contrary, lack of expandability of laptops.

Get over it, laptop snobs. I hasn't happened yet in the 20 years they've been claiming desktops will go away, and it's not likely to ever happen.

I never had a TV in my room and I turned out just fine. The TV was in the living room, so my parents could monitor what my sister and I were watching. There's no difference between your seven year old telling to the teacher to 'fuck off' and the seven year old telling the teacher rudely to 'go away'. People need to stop abusing terms like 'broadband.' I have news for all of you: Even 300 BPS modems are BROADBAND. That is, they are not 'baseband' (~'digital'), but broadband (~'analog'). 1000GB/s Ethernet is not broadband, it's baseband.

Passwords are never entered automatically -- you can double click the KeePass password field to copy the password to the clipboard for 10 seconds, and then paste it into Web page's password field. After 10 seconds, the password is automatically removed from the clipboard. Works for more than web pages, too.

There's nothing to prevent Vista from under VMware, QEMU, XEN, Parallels, etc. As long as the emulator makes Vista 'think' it has DRM-capable hardware, then you'll have no problems capturing anything coming out of the sound card when running under a non-DRM-restricting OS.

What is needed is a total review of what patents are for, why society should grant them, and how this should operate in a post-industrial world. Compare, for example, the trademark system (an industrial-age protection) with the domain name system (proper digital age protection of the same thing), and you see what could be possible.

Hmmm...what if you had an online database of implemented original inventions, peer-reviewed, of course. Those with truly inventions would then post them in the database. Peers in the industry would review the invention to determine if it was truly original. Laws would prevent implementation of inventions that haven't yet completed the peer-review process -- if it passes the peer-review, the inventor gets the sole right to sell/produce the invention for 5 years. The 'payment' for receiving a patent would be that the inventor would have to participate in the peer-review process for at least 3 other inventions. A registrar, consisting of a panel of 3 trustees and 3 judges would oversee everything to ensure that everyone was playing fair -- violators would be prosecuted.

I can't think of a way to stop 'streamripping.' I mean, even if you closed the loop all the way down to my soundcard, it would still have to come out as sound in some quality or another. Once it's in that analog form, I just pipe it into another input device on the same or different machine and begin recording. I've used TotalRecorder to just copy the buffer of my sound card to a file and have captured many NPR shows that I could not find otherwise to purchase.

And similar tools exist on Linux to capture the ALSA buffers. There's absolutely no way to prevent 'streamripping' with any DRM. The broadcast has to be decoded at the time of play -- there's no way around it. For that matter, these same techniques work with any DRM.

The bottom line here is that DRM schemes are inherently broken and can't be fixed. So let's just get rid of all DRM and be done with it, 'k Mafiaa?

As far as that goes, any software developer knows that when it comes to performance, you can maximize for size or speed, but not both. In this case, FF chose to optimize for speed, rather than size, but left a config option for those who would rather they had taken the opposite stance. I see no problem with this, given that memory is cheap (and getting cheaper). Anyone worried about a browser taking 60MB of RAM doesn't have enough memory; however, if they can't afford more memory for whatever reason, they still can decide to reduce FF's minimized size in memory.
