    On a side note, the emacs versioning system is amusing in itself ... IIRC they were numbering the releases 0.x and working up to 1.0 as normal. But it took so many releases that they ended up just dropping the "0." designation and calling it "x" instead. Which is why emacs is at version 23 where vim (on my machine) is only at 7.2 and nano at 2.0.9 ;-)

    Wait, what you're saying is....that Emacs hasn't even hit 1.0 yet? This is actually emacs 0.23? *looks scared*

    I have used emacs on ITS, TOPS-20 and Multics. I am still getting used to this Unix emacs thing, I still smile at the fact that I don't have to put up with gosling emacs any more.

    For the last time, it's not Unix Emacs, it's GNU Emacs. The operating system it runs on is GNU. As in GNU's Not Unix.

    *sigh*

    Nevermind. Most you kids are too young to even be able to argue with me. :(

    This is also called 'multitty'. You can open a new frame anywhere, whether on another X display, or on a TTY.

    You can even start Emacs in a screen session in your .profile.

    And ... did I mention that because each emacs server can have it's own name, you can different emacs servers for different purposes, each with their own .emacs file.

    Oh, yeah, and someone even told me that it has a decent text editor, too!

    The exploit is that people, especially in the U.K., will tend to trust results of a search that appear to be emanating from the MI5 website, and hence, with a well-formed set of "search results," a site could be setup that mimicks MI5's, thus tricking people into revealing passwords, credit card numbers, etc.

    I am sure some old hardware does exist that still doesn't have 64bit drivers for Vista/2008, but you really really need to try to actually find such hardware.

    Well, you don't need to try too hard if you have older Dell or HP equipment. See what I mean?

    The "bastard child" appellation applies to XP 64. Under Vista, hardware manufacturers have been pretty good about providing 64-bit support, as far as I can tell.

    Really? Well, then you don't have a Broadcom 5700, 5701, or 5702 NIC. These NICs work fine on 64-bit Linux with the tg3 driver, but on Vista, they're not even supported. You have to use the XP driver, which doesn't work right.

    Errmmm....more or less. Not counting the dozens of minor languages and dialects I know.

    Theme is the same: BASIC was the gateway drug.

    My point is that you're praising DRM not because it is good in itself, but because you believe that it's necessary for companies to license content.

    No, I'm simply stating the obvious: it is false to say that DRM offers no benefit to the consumer ever. I come to bury DRM, not to praise it. ;)

    And I do not believe that it's necessary; the publisher of George Orwell's 1984 does, obviously. (Oh, the irony!)

    And when that happens, and you wonder whatever happened to the first sale doctrine, I'll be reading my paperback copy of 1984 while wondering what has become of the free world.

    I sincerely hope that while you're reading that paperback, that you have the Right to Read it.

    While I agree with this 100% because it is totally accurate and totally to the point...

    There is NO FUCKING BENEFIT to the customer. EVER. Things are not cheaper, they are no easier to access - in fact the opposite is often true.

    I can't agree totally with this. DRM makes content that would otherwise be unavailable in a digital format available, only because some companies refuse to license their content unless it is protected by DRM.

    If you don't like that company's stance, then don't pay for/license their content. Vote with your feet. It's what the free market is all about.

    And now you know why I do not now, and nor will I ever, possess an Amazon Kindle. (Hear me Bezos?)
