Teachers, steel workers, and so on have unions because they're not involved in the future of that business they're simply holding it up a la wooden wheelless chariots.
Programmers working for corporations should have unions. Hackers building, improving, and selling the stuff corpses use need an attitude adjustment not unions. You can't keep sweeping it under the rug.
And what the hell does DeCSS have to do with geeks. We can't let the idea that it's only for geeks continue to screw users who may not be geeks just somewhat savvy.
DeCSS needs to be seen as a practical tool not as the fairy tale evil wizard threatening to destroy the MPAA it's been made out to be.
And what's with the communism crap? The GPL is no more restrictive than the US constitution.
It's time to start building businesses at home over DSL. Start changing the landscape. As long as we're thought of as MP3 pirating misfits, we're going nowhere.
Once we have local businesses over the net. We will succeed in getting attention. As long as we're mere consumers we're fucked.
Huyeah, Crazy alright. I should run Windows, an OS that is built like those disproportionate Gothic churches.
/. needs a buffer organization to answer FAQ questions perhaps through an AI agent. Answering the same questions over and over is very disheartening (geez newspeak).
I have not bought the beautifully telnetable Dreamcast for its lack of a selection of role playing games. Also I wonder if worldforge games will run off it.

I gave up on Altavista when the same damn site was linked down all the way down the list.
One observes that the post before yours did do that. And at 35 posts (where 200 is normal, 500 we're pissed and 1000 script kiddie attack) I think you're jumping the gun.
The whole difference between communism and capitalism is the fact that one recognizes that evil exists and the other doesn't. The extreme right capitalism is in no way capitalism. It's communism with a few business people at the helm. Stick to the dynamics the details are just a distraction.

about talking to people who aren't in the room with you.
Last I checked it was considered a communication/togetherness/relationship/involvemen t when you were in the same place with someone. Check every traditional holiday celebration. Check the fact that people freak out that IRC is replacing the phone or the local restaurant. I mean let's face it: If you live in a shithole of a town are you going to want to be involved with someone local if all you want to do is leave?
So taking the above and putting 2+2 together, I would say that statement was twisted to be more persuasive in the techology is a social no-no sense.
Cell phones are perfectly acceptable. It's no different than someone calling on the phone during an otherwise private night. Course the cell phone is a no-no if say you're...busy... I say it's fine otherwise and frankly what I'd like to see is people carrying speaker cell phones so you could have a meeting over IP during lunch.
I personally don't like the idea of cell phones used to keep tabs on people. If a partner's going to call every other hour to check up on you, then the relationship is over. Contrasting to the above post, I believe cell phones intended to put people in the same accessible space at the same time and you get rid of the cell phone freak because that person doesn't understand that communication isn't just about being in the same place at the same time which is what a cell phone allows you to do. Talking to people in different places is a superficial interpretation of what it does.
It's like saying roses are red... is a stupid poem talking about roses. The second abstracted layer (2nd and 3rd lines) is what's important.
This is the kind of confusion we create when we look at only the details instead of the functions of how reality works and it only leads to poor attempts at making reality fit shallow models like the poster above tries to do.
Hi, I really apologize for the tone in this letter but I have to ask where you're coming from?
Please answer this: What in hell makes you think it's easy? I really don't understand how you can assume that.
It is perfectly possible to develop a filter list that will filter the really egregious cases without filtering political speech and the like.
Go for it, chief. When you can't read the weather because winter was hard on cars don't come crying to us. Sorry, dude. No censorship. No way. I was born in that fucking bullshit. No hell in way. Whatever. (Now was that stubborn refusal or do I have a point?)
If effort is not made to make it easier for parents to filter genuinely offensive content, then the current bunch of censorware will go into wide use
In my experience, no one should ever make compromises against their conscience. When I say conscience I mean not guilt nor some learned morality, but having the wisdom to see the cliff you're jumping from. Such compromises only make people numb, apathetic, cold, and terribly bitter. Sickening. Fear of such compromises make people into flamers, but not quite as bad as the fool who continually let's things slip.
I approve of the 2nd Amendment. Do I think there should untrained shooters playing gang lords? No. I think people should protect their ideas or rather themselves, from oligarchs? (Ayn Rand agrees also contrary to most people's beliefs.) Should they do it with broken patent laws? Hell no. Guess what? Supporting a broken ideology is no better than allowing a broken tool to go to market. I view choosing between one or the other as a distraction from spending my time on productive efforts such as teaching people about technology and the importance of this modern day printing press.
Incidentally... ZDNet (yes, I used to go there) did a poll after Columbine and found 55% of parents would let their kids play games. Where do they get 75% from?

Everything I've worked with in the past year has been full of tradeoffs.
Every science has limits that lead back conservation principles.
Some examples: Cache RAM: associativity If assoc goes up hit time goes down miss penalty goes up.
Classic time vs space: The faster the program the the bigger the file unless it's badly designed.
Badly designed code: Code structure accssible to bad designers. More overhead though.
You'd have to be superficial fascist fuck to think genetics is going to be free of these problems. Heck we're fucking up even without genetics. Look at Columbine a couple of drugged up kids blew up a high school. Big surprise.

Suspended animation of society by fascism/communism vs destruction of society by fascism caused by the digital divide?
Aren't those the same problem?:) I love it. Either we're not mature enough or we're not mature enough.
Technology can go forward. People have to grow up There's no substitute.
The Digital Divide is the problem
You don't see people strangling people with let's a baby's diaper.
