Mozex is an extension for Firefox that can handle mailto links (just about) anyway you want. I use it with pine, as I (ALSO) don't like graphical mail.
Mozex can also be configured on how to handle: news, telnet, irc, ed2k, ftp, aim, downloads, Viewing source and editing text areas. Great program, I hight recommend it.
