  3. Re:I believe it on Western Union Blocking Money Transfers to Arabs · · Score: 1

Valid points. Assuming that the management of Western Union is reasonably intelligent, why would they have to profile anyone or delay transactions if it wasn't warranted by regulation? After all, heck some guy GAVE them money to GIVE someone else. Last time I tried to pay at WU with my credit card, they politely informed me that wouldn't be possible. So, I doubt its anything do with credit/identity theft. I agree in that something has to be done to prevent terrorism and terrorists. Profiling certain communities is a way, but not an intelligent way. Not only does it cause frustration, but those within the community feel that they aren't being understood correctly. Not a good feeling if you've been there.

From a PR perspective the egg on the face is the problem. From a management perspective, the means in which he got access is the problem. Even though the FBI folks aren't the most creative (else they wouldn't have been suspectible to a dict. attk), I'll bet that they know the next time around such a inane thing happens.....some butts are going to be flying out the door - much like the blessed chair.

  6. Re:Excellent news on Microsoft to Support ODF via Plug-In · · Score: 1

This is good news for the present ODF tools since it gives them access to Office-07. And, this proves that MS acknowledges the significant presence of Office substitutes.

Another thing that bothers is - Does a system require Vista to run Office-07? If so, then I'd reckon it is a ploy to boost interest and sales for Vista. Vista has otherwise taken a lot of bashing for performing sluggishly and hogging memory.

    That said, Viva Italia!!

...If Microsoft's business theory is antiquated, then Apple's- - which is for the most part derived from Microsoft's -- ought to be antiquated, too. So what's antiquated about making a product and selling it? Sure it's been done for a 1000s of years but that doesn't mean it's outdated... people will be doing exactly the same in the next 1000 years

Author didn't mean that "making a product and selling it" is antiquated. He only meant to illustrate that Apple's business and MS's business are intrinsically similar, and thus: Were the market/industry/experts to believe that MS's business is antiquated, then Apple's business would also be same since both businesses are one business. Woah, hope that made sense.

  8. Re:What I don't get... on NYT on Paul Graham's YCombinator Bootcamp · · Score: 2, Insightful

It is always possible to develop your start-up into a viable self-sustaining business by yourself. One reason many start-up founders flip the company is because they are passionate about their product, and realise that they are probably not the best people to manage it in the long-run. Furher, by flipping the company to a larger potential competitor you keep the product alive as opposed to having it later buried by the competitor. But that is entirely depended on competitor, market positioning and etc.

    Smart idea.

Step - 1: Understand company and its performance
Step - 2: Analyse it like an analyst
Step - 3: Predict what will happen based on your understanding AND what other analysts will predict.

Simple 3 step procedure, except, you would be doing exactly what a heard of analysts out there are doing. Basing your predictions on your understanding of the comapny performance, AND predictions of other peoples' actions.

Classical Game Theory. So, in essence, you would be doing what is expected of you to do. Thus, System fail: core dumped

Sure Wikipedia is a great tool. I use it all the time too. But everyone has got to realise, it is NOT the ONLY source of information.

Like all sources of information, it will be biased at some point. That is precisely why you refer to other sources to use your intellect to make your judegement/opinion. In short: Wikipedia - great source of information. Biased? Very possibly. Thus, use it as a reference. It is not a one-stop truth center.

    Remember, truth is subjective.

  11. Similar concept in another site. on Web Game Helps Predict Spread of Epidemics · · Score: 2, Interesting
I remeber visiting a site that adopted a similar concept - Book Crossing. Except, instead of dollar bills, they tracks books.

You can assign each book a reference number at the site. Crossers can leave a book at any location once they are done. Those who pick the book can then goto the site to login information about where they picked it from and etc.

Pro's and cons to each mechanism:

Dollar bills:- Better to track since they are more widespread in usage as oppose to an eclectic few who might be interested in reading particular books (tastes come into play).

Books:- Their network holds uniform across borders. Dollar bills on the other hand may not be as exchangeable in another country as they are in the U.S.
