It would be interesting to dig deeper in that respect.
The fact that corruption inside a Communist society leads to
a private person could not make much money out of his or her copyrights or "invention brevets" unless they already had a cosy position in the hierarchy of the state, party or one one of the professional guilds
Is alarmingly* similar to the current capitalistic practices:
a private person can not make much money out of his or her copyrights or "invention brevets" unless they already have a cosy position in the hierarchy of the MAFIAA, party or one one of the professional guilds
*How would you use "scary" hear? is scarily the correct adverb?
Real people (working on real projects like the ones I mentioned in my previous post) use MsAccess database as a compromise between easiness of use and features.
Professors, post-doc's, economists, etc, do not have the time to be poking around with phpMyAdmin or any other "web front end" in vogue. They either use a spreadsheet or an MSAccess like database.
We get the data from the government (usually CSV, dbf [for GIS] or xls) and put that into excel files. Either those or mdbs are shared around project (EU FP7 project) members.
Some people use such data for statistical analysis (STATA, R, SPSS) and other use it as input for simulations (myself counted).
I can imagine writing an email to my colleagues telling them "here is the SQL dump of the database from my mySQL server", please do install mySQL in your office and run the SQL file to replicate the database."
In other things, is the new paint pattern in your mom's basement going well?
And nowadays, emphasis should really be on enjoying music live, anyway.
Unfortunately for some stiles of music like Metal listening live is not always better than listening a good mastered album.
I still love going to an orchestra hall (Leipzig Gewandhaus). In contrast, after going to several heavy metal concerts of groups of my preference (dream theater, COB, stratovarius, satriani, vai, maiden, etc...); I find that the objective of going to such concerts is different than when I listen them at my desk/gym/home.
Why use a toy single user database when real ones are free and also run on MS Windows and have nice GUIs you can get to from any web browser?
Because to use the alternative databases you will have to install a server and a client in such database and waste a lot of time to understand the whatever UI is the "most user friendly" now.
I use MySQL and PostgreSQL to manage web site data (for an NGO and for a company I have) but I would *never* imagine using something like that to share data with my research colleagues (Agriculture/economists/biologists/ecologists). The only other alternative would be SQLite but it is just a library/database format.
The only application that is close to Access is OOo base.. and that is a sad fact. And it does not even open MDB files:(
Uninstall PulseAudio = uninstall entire frigging GNOME desktop. I kept trying to tell it "no, I just want ALSA playback" in sound settings.
No, it won't uninstall whole GNOME desktop, that is just meta package for ubuntu-desktop, so you can uninstall it without any problem.
Well, not really, if you install any audio apps that have pulseaudio output (like MPD) you will have to reinstall it again. In that case try changing alsa setting, pulseaudio takes alsa output by default, you can change that by set alsa output device to hw device (you will lose the ability to have multi programs to output at the same time that way). Or the better way is to fix/etc/asound.conf and make a dmix device (google for more information). Good luck!
Howdy shit... and you expect this to be the year of Linux on the desktop??
What, actually get a job? No way, you're paying for my room and board. Forever.
That's already solved. In Mexico public Universities are completely free (well, only about 50 US Dollars every 6 months). Now, how do you get your food and roof while you study is your own problem.
filthy healthcare system that one would want to end up in, compared to say, Germany, France or Australias systems.
Interesting opinion. Living and working in Germany at the present time and having lived in the UK for 4 years, I am curious what are the benefits of the German healthcare compared to the NHS.
In here (in Germany) I must pay 15 EUR every 3 months if I want to go to the doctor. Also, depending on the doctor I use, I may need to pay two times in a quarter. (in the UK I never paid when visiting a doctor... nobody paid AFAIK).
In addition, In Germany I must pay for any medicines I get (in the pharmacy). One doctor I visited gave me IBUPROFEN, because it was cheaper than other possiblities (his own words...). In the UK, you only pay about 10 pounds for a prescription. I once got about 2 months worth of IBS medication for only that from my doctor.
Regarding specialist medicine I have had no need to use it in Germany, but in the UK I did have several tests done and they cost me absolutely nothing.
Your POV on the subject vastly exaggerates the problems in the US, and completely ignores the numerous problem with the NIH in the UK.
Yeah, I am sure the NIH in the UK is terrible. On the other hand, as someone who studied in the UK for about 4 years (PhD) as an International student, I have to agree 100% with Simon's view on the NHS quality and availability.
I used the NHS for several tests while studying in the UK (I suffer form IBS). I had even a colonoscopy and ultrasound scans. How much did I paid from that? NOTHING.
And everyone there knew I was just a passer-by student whose student-VISA (as I am not from within the EU) will expire in less than 2 years.
The NHS is not perfect, but it is really a godsent. Any Birton who think otherwise should really go to the USA to get scared.
Big deal. Scratch your itch! Check out the code from CVS and contribute a fix. Don't just sit there and complain, do something about it! This is F/OSS for God's sake. How many people would contribute fixes to Microsoft's buggy audio drivers if they had half a chance?
Bah! As a computer user I do not have time to do that. The previous to last version of Linux I tried had this "ALSA" sound driver, which was *almost* behaving OK. Then the last version had this "PulseAudio" sound driver which was completely broken. My 10 years old Windows XP operating systems gives me no problems when playing audio.
I put the blame in Distribution makers, who added PulseAudio to "production-ready" distributions when the software is clearly in Alpha stages.
ALSA is on the other hand in BETA stage IMHO. Still, it was good enough.
IDA?? OllyDbg is all I need. why wait until you get all the asm listing just attach, NOP-NOP-NOP JNZ->JZ and you are done.
By the way, the news here I think is that they are doing this to replace Microsoft Works. I think that will certainly piss off people from some industries (I think lawyers use that no?).
The update's working as designed. Better they magically stop working
LOL How's that new basement lamp?
I can see it now, "yes boss, our Amazon.com portal stopped working because we updated the libc library to the last version to patch a security issue; and our Apache server stopped working because it is not compatible with it... what? clients? who cares? better the page to stop working and receiving orders than having a potential possible risk of maybe someone trying to r00tz0r us."
Haha, just yesterday I told my wife about how cool would be the SouthPark guys mocking The Windows/Mack/Linux offering, imagine this scenario:
- The south park kids enter into the "computer convention" - The first exhibit they see is the "Microsoft Windows" one, with the heading "Now More Secure than ever". There also is Steve Ballmer, with his bully/baldy/sweaty self bullying you to get Windows "buy it, NOW, NOW,NOW!!"
- The second exhibit they see is "GNU/Linux", with Richard Stallman, with this dirty/beardy/nerdy self eating his toes' nails.
- The third exhibit they see is the "Apple/Mac" one. Over there they see Steve Jobs talking his way generating his distortion field.
This is one of the successes that should be advertised in the "commercial" portal of Linux.
This should be along with other "enterprise success stories" linked in the front page of Linux.com
Along with "learn you way around Linux" in minutes. like this guys
Seriously, the Linux.com portal must be purchased by RedHat, Novell, IBM, Canonical or other commercial Linux company, to make it a real starting point for people that come in touch with the Linux OS (being it Enterprise, Workstation or Desktop users).
That's great until some common library needs to be updated for a security hole, and you have download 20 updates from different vendors (assuming they even provide updates...) rather than 1 item in Windows Update.
And then magically, the other 19 programs stop working because they are not compatible with the updated library.
It would be interesting to dig deeper in that respect.

You just do not get the point.

I had played this game before and just spend $10.00 on it to have a "legit" copy of it.

Now *that* is gold... I would kill for an interface like that
This is a game that should *definitely* be available in Ubuntu Software Store for next release.
Now now...
If you have used Microsoft Word to write your blog you would have seen that "more easier" is kind of green-underline (i.e., it does not make sense).
That hurt even *my* eyes... and my native language is not English.
DOCH!
That is a great German word I learned.
Q: Gehen sie nicht mit uns?
A: doch! (on the contrary, I am going.)

Free education? Excellent!
I'm off to earn fifteen PhDs, now.

Vista is the new Microsoft iteration of "Windows ME", "Windows 3.11" and DOS 6.22.
All of them offered nothing but minor upgrades which you live without if you had the previous version (XP, Windows 98, Windows 3, Dos 6).
12 years and still no decent unicode support
12 Years and still no decent editorial...
btw. It seems both of us has had too much free time in our hands... I have seen you a lot in slashdot recently :)
*readies his version of IDA*

Ahh, that was a nice trip.
And also depends on the quality of the card.
Of course you can find a brandless slow SD card but it does payback spending 5 bucks more for better quality.

Well, except for those audiobook fagots, or the guys using pdf's (morons).
What do you use? djvu?
lol :) offense not taken, in fact as a Postdoc dong simulation research in Germany I was laughing at the idea....
mhmmm maybe that is more profitable!
