Of course, you'll note with a quick search, there are no Britney songs available for download.

Smart move as I see it. Both guys are very capable, so it is nice to see this office start staffing with real professionals rather than just pay lip service.

  3. NSI Support Group - Used and Abused.... on What Should Happen To Expired Domains? · · Score: 2

I too have had numerous problems with NSI. More than I care to mention here. I've recently started migrating all of my domains to another registrar. It turns out the process is much easier than I anticipated. I chose register.com as my new registrar because I like their management system (being able to see and configure all my domains via a web interface). I called their "transfer of registrar" 800 number at 10:00 on a week night. In two rings I got a live person on the phone. I told him what I wanted to do and he informed me that I would be incur a charge of $35, but that this would extend my domain registration by one year.

While I was on the phone, he initiated the transfer. An email was sent to the registered point of contact listed in whois. It contained a link, which I clicked on. The link brought up a transfer agreement at a form in which I typed "I agree to the transfer" and clicked submit.

Five days later, I got a notice from NSI that they had approved my transfer. A day later the domain showed up in register.com and no more NSI.

Bottom line, there are alternatives, and as consumers, we can speak with our $. It also gives me great personal pleasure to diminish NSI's revenue stream, because they have put me through hell many times in the past few years.

  5. Anyone else having problems registering DNS hosts. on NSI Botches Domain Transfer, Says 'Not Our Problem' · · Score: 1

I stood up a new DNS server to serve a few older domains I own. However, when I tried to register the host with NSI as a DNS server (required for domains registered under Internic), I was told that I could not because the top level domain had not been registered with them.

This is complete bullshit. The new dns server name resolves and it points to a valid IP address for a machine offering DNS services. Where is the requirement for the domain to have been registered with NSI. It is my choice who I give my money to to register the domain and it shouldn't prevent me from offering a vital network service.

Also, if you have a domain originally registered under Internic you are not allowed to use the NSI 24/7 support line. You have to call a special Internic tech support line that is only open during normal business hours. Why?!!?! I still have to pay NSI $35 a year...how does that make me different and worth less support. I have found however, that the level of incompetence is consitent in both support centers.

Has anyone else had problems registering a DNS host with NSI where it was denied because you didn't register the host's top level domain with them. DNS is what makes the Internet work and right now NSI is deliberately breaking it.

One of my favorite Bruce Sterling moments was a skit performed at CFP several years ago called "Speaking for the unspeakable" One of the characters in this keynote was called the "truly malicious hacker". You noted that while he doesn't exist, he will soon. Do you think we've encountered him/her yet? If you had to revisit this character, what might he say to today?
