Myself and a group of 5 others built a pretty cool defender style game with a sweet scrolling background of canyons and what not.
Now you are all going to say that everything has to be 3d now and I'm an old timer without a clue. But actually I've poked around with alot of the latest free code and libraries (D7, OGL, Java 3D, Genesis Eng., etc) and the work is mostly done for you. Use these as references. Don't be affraid.
Oh... and we built the game and a sprite editor in 6 weeks:)
