You are wrong. You know why the real estate prices soar in Hong Kong, Macau and Canada? Mainland Chinese keep buying them with cash. Like everything else, this thing is not marketed to those who cannot afford it.

You Americans just don't get it do you? You have no money to finance this kind of projects anymore. Do you know how many of your banks got bailout money from China? Your government owes China a shit load of money.

When I was living in the bay area a few years ago, cell phone calls were being dropped when you crossed the various bridges from the East Bay to the Peninsula. I could never get the latest cell phones and there were just a handful of brands and models to choose from. Now I live in Asia and I am using a 3.6Mbps HSDPA high speed mobile phone for my http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/I-mode/ service. The latest phone models from Samsung, Nokia or Sony Ericsson come out every 2-3 months. Changing mobile phones is like buying new clothes for most people.

Many years ago when I realized that American programmers were way over priced than their Chinese counterparts, I decided to move my company's development center to Beijing. Everything has paid off nicely. I get a much higher margin selling enterprise solutions to various companies. I have no problem recruiting because the supply of programmers is abundant. The reality is in order for American companies to survive and be competitive, they need to look elsewhere for capable workforce. I did and am much happier. With stiff competition from companies like Google, Microsoft is doing the right thing by leaving the US for a better high tech workforce.

  5. Absolutely! on Is Silicon Valley Reproducible? · · Score: 1
There are already numerous hi-tech industrial zones and software parks housing thousands of hi-tech companies in various areas in China. So it's not just one Silicon Valley, but many dozens. Some examples include the http://www.thstp.com/NewWeb/English/default.aspx and the http://www.spsp.com.cn/SoftparkEnglish/portal/inde x.jsp?tid=8&pid=8.

It is no secret that foreign companies such as Oracle, Microsoft and Google have setup R&D labs in these zones or parks.

China also accounts for 40% of Japan's software outsourcing business.

A lot of the Menlo Park venture capital firms have branches in Shanghai, China. They are funding the future Google and Yahoo equivalent companies in China.

  6. Wake up and smell the coffee! on The Future of IT in America? · · Score: 4, Interesting

As someone who has worked in both the Silicon Valley in the US and the Far East, I can only say that I haven't looked back the day when I stopped hiring US software engineers and moved the development center to China. For companies like Oracle etc, what they are doing now is stop hiring in the US but continue to increase their headcount in India and China. The reason is simple: US IT staff salaries are just too high to be competitive. I can get the Chinese engineers to produce the same code for 10% of the cost. Then when you look at the skills that the US software engineers possess apart from the usual technical skills, they are just pathetic. For instance, I need all my software engineering staff to be able to read and write English and Chinese. That rules out 99% of the resumes I received in the US. When I started hiring in China, 100% of the local candidates can read and write English (though not perfect). The reality is it is only going to get worse for the US IT staff.
