Actually, it's extremely hard and ambiguous to test the presence of life within the Martian soil without a human lab. In Antartica, there are microbes that live under a few millimeters of rock and ice, similir to the situation on Mars. Current robotics cannot find this.
Windows can be virus free if you know what your doing. With a DSL line, one can download updates and spyware and virus protection within 4 minutes. Unfortunately, most people don't have this level of intellect.
And you are lying to yourself if you don't acknowledge that the root of all Windows security problems is the fact that it's so mainstream.
I use Windows, and I've been virus free since I installed it. I tried Linux, but it's a lot more limited. I couldn't imagine any of my friends switching to it and not being extremely frustrated and/or bored.
Also, consider the fact that a new Linux version comes out constantly but it takes Windows a couple years. Users are not going to upgrade an operating system every 6 months; they wait until they have hardware limitations. This doesn't make them lazy, it just means they expect a little less maintainence than Linux gurus, who have to upgrade a lot more often.
Personally, I think Microsoft can fix it's reputation by fixing their users. It takes a full 15 minutes to secure a Windows machine, permanently, but neither Average Joe nor Linux nerds understand this. If Microsoft just put out a TV ad showing a beautiful woman going to Tools -> Windows Update, maybe you'd all understand.
Seriously, I would trust a robot a lot more than a human being on the battlefield. A remote controlled drone does not have the intelligence to rebel against its controller, and it does not have the intelligence to shoot anything other than its target.
A lot of people are focusing on the almost scary aspects, but this is the perfect way to save money and lives.
If there ever was such a thing as immortality, the only way to sustain it without running out of resources, or even room, would be uglier than mortality.
We'd have to go nazi to keep from killing ourselves. I could imagine people being denied such a service over questions of race, ugliness or intelligence. A low income population, hell bent on having unprotected sex would have a huge impact on resources.
I guess the catch-all solution would be this: if you want to live forever, we'll need to cut off your balls.
I disagree. I like to think of the economy as the means for never ending technological improvement. If we ever achieved a balance of creating and consuming, there would be no need to improve anything, and we would never have heated houses.
Can I see it?

Jealous?
Too bad. Now brush your teeth.

Besides, how cool would that be?

Economy Plan 1. Work B. Buy things that others worked for 3. Work more
