I think MS has been very successful getting into new markets. A few examples to back up my case: - the network OS with NT, eventually displace Novell - the web browsing market with IE, eventually displacing Netscape - the database market with SQL Server, gaining market share on IBM and Oracle - the development platform market with.NET, certainly a worthy competitor for Sun/Java - the gaming console market with Xbox, likely to gain share from Sony
Seriously, what significant market has MS gone after that they haven't done well in? If MS wants in the large-business computing market my money would be on them, not on their competitors.
I sure hope funding for this Earth Rotation Service has been secured for a long time. It would sure be a bummer to be stuck on the dark side of the earth if they couldn't keep it spinning.
