That's preciselly the whole point. classic army-style war o "guerrilla"??
This is the new focus internet is bringing into scene. Till now, the scene (political, economic & social) has always been ruled by 'big'. I mean, big companies, big unions, big partys, blablabla.
It's clear that now we're in a situation you can't get anything done unless you start 'putting an army together' by means of an association, an union or whatever. If you're a single one, there's nothing you can do. The only way we individuals have to do things is looking for an 'army' which is near our interest and join it. So, the main 'characters' in the democracy are not the people, but the 'armys' people make (unions, companys,etc..).
But this is the turnpoint I think internet in general (and the 'thing' slashdot started many years ago in particular) is bringing. Now it's been born a new way, cause what you do through internet and through publishing stuff related to something you don't like (or do) can easily be expanded with no promotion, no money, no legal army, etc...
So this 'geeks' webpage telling 'bout spyware may be more powerfull than all the 'old-fashioned' 'army-style' wars. I mean, why is Microsoft running this war??? Well, maybe is just for good, but the question is : Why do I have to hope for somebody 'big' to make something??? This time , this 'big' guy is doing it for good, but if the big buddy decides to do somethig for evil, how can I say no, if I've just said 'yes' to this??? I mean, if you trust some 'big brother' to do something for you, you're tied to it somehow, and maybe we just don't need these 'big brothers' anymore, now we can communicate & expand points of view without their help.
Greetings
Sorry for my bad englis (I'm spanish)
Ok, I got it.
When I was talking about reaching somebody on the phone, I'm afraid I had my tiny contacts list in mind.
As far as they can help memorize how to reach somebody, they're useful. Anyway, maybe in the future we don't use 'area' codes, but 'job' codes, or some other agrupation method (that's what it is at the end, an 'aggrupation' method -and Sorry for my awfull english-).
I think the point is How do we organize people?? Nowadays we use the old geographical method, which was and still is good, but more & more often people doesn't need to "settle down" to make a living. (And my secret hope is not to need it anymore for anybody). We actually need to belong to some territorial tribe, but I think most of these 'needs' came from the fact that there are many things we need to use, to have, or to live in, that needs lots of people working together in the same place, but that's not mandatory, as more and more things are digitalized and more and more robot-style machines do the stuff right....
Anyway, sorry for this amount of 'nothing'.
Just to say YOU GOT ME!!!
have fun.
I still see nosense in this 'area code' stuff. What is coming with IpVoice is no charge for phone calls. You pay for your 'multipurpose information highway' piece a fixed tax, and do whatever you want over it for free. The convenience of keeping local codes or whatever is economic, but it's based on a per-distance paying system, which is itself based on old technology standards.
I just don't get this fuzzing around 'area codes'.
Area codes are based on the telco structure of an ordinary phone. I mean: you have to interconnect small phone networks from one state to another (or one country to another, and so and so).
That's the 'area code' reason. It simply substitutes the 'operator' of the first days.
If you have a glance at any old days movies, you'll see why we have 'area codes':
-riing
-"I want to make a call to chicago"
-"yes sir, which is the number?"
-blabla
the area code simply allows a machine to do that.
The point is. What do you really want when you call someone?? You just want to talk to that 'someone', you don't want to talk to the 'someone's house', so the phone number is just a synonym (a sort of an id number) of that someone's name. The area codes are just 'routing prefixes', useful for the machine that handles the connection.
Now, if you have a cell phone, that is really not necessary. In fact, in Europe it is handled that way. I'm very surprised of reading here about cell phones with 'area codes'...
Anyway, the voIp just wipes out this last frontier between the machinery you need to talk to someone, and what you need to localize him
Area codes are just dinosaurs waiting to die.
have fun.
Hi!
Just to say that.
Today, in El navegante (a blog section of the spanish newspaper "el mundo"), there is this new about the spanish CMT ("Comision del Mercado de las Telecomunicaciones"), which is -more or less- the spanish FCC, had drop out a kind of a recomendation sheet on the IpVoice in spain, and it's point is the same. give 'phone numbers' for IpVoice users.
have fun.
Well, I kept tuned txs to the FFII, and emailed with very polite and personalized texts to both the two spanish members of the JUI (One was against patent, the other was in favor of it). I also posted in the official web page.
That was not too much, but, you see, I had this thinking yesterday. Why is it so important what 'media' says? (newspaper and so on), and why does politicians care about it??
It is not because of the 'power' of the media. They don't have any by themselves. The can't lobby, they don't use to have much money, neither contacts.
Their power is based on the people who read them, because they can change their mind.
And why politicians are afraid people change it's mind? becaouse that people may not vote them, or may talk to another about it, etc...
So, If you post a politician, you're getting over the whole 'media-in-the-middle' proccess. One always expect the media to cover one's concerns, in the hope that that can change it. Anyway, if one just post it straight to the politician, he may get the same result....
Whoa! sorry for this amount of 'nothing'.
Yeah, I've not read the reference, but I'm pretty sure that in those sectors Microsoft's been involved in, prices has gone down but, why??
It seems to me that this is more or less a 'spartanian tactic' (sorry for the bad english). There's a myth we've all heard of about spartanian guys who dropped ther childs to a hole with wolfes (I'm not pretty sure, indeed , of where I've heard of this. Maybe it was on a Conan comic, or in the great '300' from frank Miller). Anyway, you drop your childs into a hole with wolfes, and a few days later, you rescue the survivors. You can be sure those survivors are 'the best of the best' (from that point of view).
Microsoft simply gets in as a tank in the middle of a hardware store. It buys the other companies, ir it simply bundles everything with his OS, or whatever, so, the tiny amount of software companies that survive this 'wolfes hole' has done so because of ther so low prices, or so high features. This is just evolution , but the wildiest one.
This is the point.
We're not talking about 'engineering'. This is physics. Well they may had discovered the 'yellow holes' in universe, and nobody knows that, or whatever.
Anyway, even in the atomic bomb project, which was really a huge and secret one, the physics of it was universally known before they started building paloa lto. The can be as far as you want in 'engineering', but what is needed here is physics, and is much more profitable for them to keep their ears open till some discover shows up in the public scientisc community, and use it, and put zillios of engineers on it.
