  1. A man caught in The Law on When Would You Accept DRM? · · Score: 1

P'sha to the arbitrary laws of men
    -Socrates, updated for 2005

You see, the point of having a discussion on the ethical/financial standpoint of copyright laws is to porpose how they ould be more moral/just for all. This includes both the content creators, distributors, and customers. Currently, the market is HEAVILY slanted in favour of the true middlemen (the record and production companies who take creative content, mark it up thousands of percent, and sell it to us poor CD/DVD buying saps). This is unsurprising considering the relative financial, and thus political, standing of the parties involved.

Ergo, if we are to view this mark-up as unethical, we ought not be constrained by what IS "legal". Instead, we should be discussing what OUGHT to be legal. If, as is likely, DRM will be used to facilitate such immorality, it should matter what impact it's rejection will have on "legal" downloading sites (iTunes, Napster-to-go, etc.). In DRM's absence, the above mentioned middlemen may be forced to accept certain digital freedoms. When/if that happens, lawmakers will follow suit. After all, the laws of a land are supposed to reflect the ethics of those residing in that land, aren't they?

  2. Whoa Back.... on Got Game · · Score: 1

Easy Tigers.... the book in question i one aimed at mangement(y'know them guys whut tell us all how to better do the jobs that we, not they, went to school to learn how to do). the primary role of a manger in an organization, is well....to manage and organize. as many of you who are griping that your bosses don't communicate or that video games have made your youths fat and lazy (far too many people seem to speak a tad to knowingly about the plight of a 'friend' sleeping his mom's basement playing Zelda) i would seem reasonable to expect these manager to want to acquire new methods and avenue of communication with employees. (so as to manage and oranize them). while "game-based" management (which is incedentally used as a vital planning tool for policy-makers across the world), might not be universally applicable, those who derride/disiss it as useless obviously miss the point of the book (ie. easier communication with younger employees). and if you can't see that well....you should get used to people telling you what to do (no managing for you)

    a) drugs are avaialbe at many prices. the legal ones, many of whom are narcotics(mmmm...lithium). moreover, they are in ample enough supply to be more effectd by seasonal weather than by any law enforcement strategy. ergo, the good old 'laws' of supply and demand apply. b)given that 'fair' use of copies is slightly oxymoronic, a war on copying given the widespread nature of its practice is unthinkably expensive to do on a wide scale. Think of the time required to send angry letters to suspected copiers. the legal fees, and zip-ties alone would make victory in the WAr on Copying impossible. c) you and the chap to whom you are responding are missing the real meaning of Christm...err...i mean the real reason to have a War on something: war require soldiers, soldiers get paid, that pay is spent on consummer goods. ain't war grand.
