Actually thinking about it I almost want this to be true, we need strong competition and a dipshit move like this would push a LOT of business towards AMD. I can tell you I've been building AMD exclusively for nearly 5 years, even putting my money where my mouth is and having my entire family on AMD (5 desktops including 3 gamer, 1 netbook and 1 laptop) that 90% will never know the difference between Intel and AMD because the CPU just isn't the bottleneck anymore. When you look at the jobs folks have, movies, IM, gaming, surfing, burning DVDs? I could put a high end Intel system and a bottom of the line $70 AMD quad side by side and they honestly wouldn't notice a difference, even the low end stuff is MUCH faster than the users ability to come up with useful work to give it.
So I do hope everyone here is putting their money where their mouth is and supporting AMD by buying their chips, because i can tell you I play the latest games, including the latest shooters, transcode video, do multitrack audio editing, and even on this $100 AMD Hexacore it just chews through the tasks with ease, and the money I saved on the CPU lets me get more powerful parts where it DOES matter, like faster GPU, more RAM, and an SSD for caching I'm gonna pick up after the silly season. Plus being able to go from a single to a dual to a quad without replacing the board or any other parts? Niiice, and as a bonus when I decided to go hexa I could just pass that quad and board to the youngest who is blasting through his MMOs without a bit of trouble.
Only advice i'd add is for those that are just switching? don't bother with the stock AMD coolers as they are crap, pick up a Coolermaster 212 or N520, they can be had for under $40 (under $20 for the 212), they fit in any mATX case no problem, and they really do make a BIG difference when it comes to temps. I went from an idle of 112f and load of nearly 140f on stock to an idle of 84f and a max load of 128f on the N520 with just the stock Coolmaster paste that is included, I changed that for Arctic Silver with the oldest boy's X6 and dropped 4f idle and 7f load, so well worth the $34 for the cooler.

Now let me tell you about reality, and the simple fact and reality of ARM is it can't even manage the IPC of an 8 year old netburst P4, it sure as hell isn't gonna get enough IPC to run triple A rated games. Hell even the ARM holdings group has realized this, which is why their last couple of talks have been about "dark silicon" because you can't turn all of the chip on at once without killing the battery or slamming into the thermal wall just as X86 did around 4Ghz. This is why you see Nvidia piling 5 cores into its latest Tegra, because they can't get the single core IPC up enough to make up for the weakness of the ARM core so they are throwing more cores at it, but anybody that has run any kind of modern gaming benchmarks can tell you most games will NOT gain from multiple cores, at best they need one "supercore" for the main game and a few weaker cores to take sound, pathfinding, etc.
So the only way ARM is gonna be a "gaming platform' is if you specify gaming to ONLY be the "cut the rope, Angry Birds' casual games. try to do a Crysis 3 or gears of War on ARM would be an uberfail, it just doesn't have the IPC to deal with the physics, ragdolls, fire and water effects, it just won't cut the mustard. ARM is designed for low power and just doesn't scale, in fact it'll be easier for Intel to scale down to meet ARM's power than it will be for ARM to scale up, just because intel has such a huge lead on IPC they could cut the chip performance of a Core i3 in half and still curbstomp ARM.
That's not to say ARM is a bad chip for mobile or embedded, its just not made for the heavy lifting required to give people AAA gaming, not anywhere even close to what X86 was cranking out 6 years ago much less the latest stuff, it would be like trying to replace a semi with a moped, it may be cheaper on gas but it just can't carry the load.
Uhh...what you just described was the exactly polar opposite of an enthusiast, what you just described is what we call a 'soccer mom' in shop circles. I mean sure if all you do is play angry birds and facebook games then ARM is just fine, but those kind of people frankly won't give a shit if its a black box or not, see the lines for the latest iDevices.

As for me this is all the more reason to continue buying AMD, as all my games play fine, I went from a single to a dual to a quad on my last board and on this one I can go up to the latest 8 cores if I want (although those $100 6 core Phenoms are nice enough for me) and most importantly I'm not having to throw the whole damned thing out if I need more speed down the road. if this kind of bullshit had been in place I'd be on my fifth board now instead of my second, and when you figure in how much higher the boards would be if you were stuck with whatever CPU they soldered in? NOT a smart buy. I have a feeling the big board companies like AsusRock and Gigabyte will be pushing AMD, not like they've got a choice as Intel would be doing to them what they did to Nvidia.
But I have no desire to get stuck on some locked down ARM wannabe playing Angry Birds, I want AAA gaming, I want to be able to transcode, I want to be able to build up my system as time goes on, and if this is true that just means Intel won't be coming near any of my computers, the loss of choice won't be worth the increased IPC.

Want some good AI? Play Far Cry 1 (Do NOT play Far Cry 2, its so retarded they had to come up with an in game excuse to why so many guys on your side is shooting at you), play Fear 1&2, I like the Crysis series although they don't come up to Far Cry 1 levels, I also like the Deus Ex series although again, not as good as Far Cry 1 and Fear AI.
To me good AI doesn't have to be brilliant, just make me work for it, like the way I'd have to look for any ways I could be snuck up on in Fear and place mines, or have an exit strategy like in Far Cry or Crysis.
This is why I will always look for games that have mods, because often a mod can make a bad game good and a good game great. take your Bioshock example, there is a mod called "Bioshock for real" or something like that that will make that game so damned hard you won't believe you are playing the same game. you get different amounts for killing the sisters (thus putting an actual moral choice in it) and you won't be getting much of nothing from the bad guys and hacking? fucking HARD and you won't get any great rewards for pulling it off, just slightly lower prices which with money so scarce you'll be damned grateful for.
But I agree, even though I looove the Bioshock series (yes I even loved the second one, Minerva's Den i thought was nearly as good as the first game) the game devs are obviously more about telling a story than beating the player. While I think this is fine i do prefer games where there is a hard level that is REAL hard, so if I'm not feeling challenged I can ramp up. For the games that don't though, give me mods. Frankly I haven't seen a game that mods can't make better, from the dozens of new systems in Freelancer to taping the flashlight to the gun in doom 3, mods can fix a LOT of problems.
That is why I like sandboxes like Just Cause II and Saints Row III, while they are open as hell and you can just ignore the missions if you want there is still a story with a beginning, middle and end. That explains why I also have never been able to get into MMOs, I like having something other than a hamster wheel as a goal. But thinking of it as a toy rather than a game? something I haven't thought of, but makes sense.

And the simple fact is look on project greenlight, you have more games being chosen per day than you could possibly ever play, and nearly all the indies are old school and like old school gameplay which includes SSMP, but not only that but there are so many FTP MMOs on there now it isn't even funny. So you are talking about dozens if not hundreds of free games to play right off the bat, no worry about them getting some game with malware off of Steam, nearly every game that has come out in the past few years supports the X360 controller, and unlike the consoles it can game AND IM AND surf AND watch YouTube AND be a media tank AND do any other task a full fledged PC can do. When a PC can't game anymore there are plenty of other uses for it, bedroom PC or media tank or office box, when that console isn't supported anymore? into the closet it goes. i know because my youngest was into consoles and handhelds for the longest time and he has a fricking pile of them gathering dust, PSP, DS, Wii, Xbox 1, PS 1, Dreamcast, Gamecube, all of them gathering dust. Meanwhile the PC I gave him to game on 8 years ago is now an office box for a former neighbor, got enough for his old game PC to buy him more RAM for his new system.
So unless you can point out a section of TFA I missed where he imposed these limitations you are just coming up with hoops to jump that frankly in all likelihood don't even exist IRL. Here let me give a few examples...Bulletstorm, sounds like a winner right? you got the guys that did Painkiller, that was pure fun, hooked up with EA to do their own take on the whole modern shooter genre, it ought to be a hoot! Nope, the jokes fall flat, the weapons SUCK MASSIVELY, and by tying the UPGRADE SYSTEM to how over the top you make your kills you just turned fun into a fucking grind.
How about F.E.A.R. 3, or how they spelled F3AR, should have known off the bat when they do a douchey letter to numbers switch we were in trouble, but fuuuck! Fear 1 & 2 were fricking great! Bad guys smart, weapons satisfying, sure the horror didn't work but like Yahtzee said "The only way to have horror in an FPS is to tape a picture of Dracula to your iron sights" but it was still FUN with a capital F, so the third HAS to be good right? Nope, AI retarded, weapons are WORTHLESS, and I mean that, if you haven't played it there is not ONE truly good weapon in the whole fucking game, I mean you can only carry 36 fucking bullets for the pistol? WTF? My out of shape ass can carry more than 36 9mm rounds! Levels bland, and the whole thing took what was a great franchise and turned it into a bunch of co-op maps with bad weapons. Frankly it would not surprise me to find out like Mario 2 that this was some other game that someone just slapped the Fear name and characters in to make a quick buck.
So I have to agree with TFA, especially on shooters, sure they look great but where is the FUN? Where is the next funny shooter like No One Lives Forever, where I can set kitty bombs and giggle as a bad guy walks up and goes "ohh, its a kitten...meow BOOM!" or the next Far Cry or Fear where the AI uses squad tactics and makes me feel that sense of "fuck yeah! You didn't see THAT coming did you?" when you manage to set up an ambush? Where is the next Painkiller or Crysis that gives me some really bad ass weapons instead of the same shit they hand us in every game, so i feel like Arnie or Stallone starring in my own action flick?
Sure the VISUALS have gotten better, but everything else took a wrong turn and ended up in shit town. The weapons unsatisfying, AI Forest Gump stupid, levels boring, it all feels like a fricking chore.
See this is what I don't get, how does "measuring" them make you win? That is like saying if you can take a measurement of the fish in the water he'll jump right into the boat. Hell I'd argue that most if not all of the polling was completely worthless, sure it'll let you target more ads to the groups that are tuning out but you can target ads all day but if you do a serious fuckup like mittens and the "47%" or the "ugly car" flubs then give it the fuck up, all the focus groups in the world can't fix that.

It has already been reported that Sony is going with a COTS AMD APU because they simply don't have the money to build another monster (last figures were a billion dollars for the PS3 R&D) so not only does MSFT know what the competition is doing, they also know that one more good smack would be all it would take, they could let Nintendo take the casuals while they take the hardcore and leave Sony out in the cold.
but the reason that they won't pull the trigger on Sony isn't IMHO worries about anti-trust, its the fact that the board is probably shitting puppies right now over the fact that their billion dollar marketing campaign for Win "Cellphone" 8 has been a giant bust and its looking to be another Vista, so sinking another couple of billion so soon after getting a body blow like that probably ain't real high on the board's priorities. More likely they'll bump up the speed and RAM and add a hotter GPU and it'll be more of a "360+" than a true next gen, because they have bigger fish to fry, like how to get a foothold in mobile and what to do about nobody buying their latest OS.
Why did he get modded down when that is pretty much it in a nutshell? Nintendo bought a chip that is barely more powerful than the one they have in the Wii and expect devs to deal with it by using the more powerful GPU instead. Problem is with more and more games having tons of physics and ragdolls and the like there is only so much a powerful GPU will cover for before you end up gimped by the CPU.
Hell this is pretty much the same strategy AMD has been using for a couple of generations now and they aren't doing so hot either, are they? It all comes down to a balancing act and Nintendo just went too far when it came to how weak a CPU they could get away with, simple as that. My guess is because they are gonna be targeting casual gamers they figure its enough to run Mario and Animal Crossing and so they figure its "good enough". Lets be honest folks, Nintindo hasn't gone for the hardcore players for a couple of generations now, so it should be of no surprise that their new system just can't run the hardcore shooters that are the hallmark of the hardcore gamers.

Actually thinking about it I almost want this to be true, we need strong competition and a dipshit move like this would push a LOT of business towards AMD. I can tell you I've been building AMD exclusively for nearly 5 years, even putting my money where my mouth is and having my entire family on AMD (5 desktops including 3 gamer, 1 netbook and 1 laptop) that 90% will never know the difference between Intel and AMD because the CPU just isn't the bottleneck anymore. When you look at the jobs folks have, movies, IM, gaming, surfing, burning DVDs? I could put a high end Intel system and a bottom of the line $70 AMD quad side by side and they honestly wouldn't notice a difference, even the low end stuff is MUCH faster than the users ability to come up with useful work to give it.
So I do hope everyone here is putting their money where their mouth is and supporting AMD by buying their chips, because i can tell you I play the latest games, including the latest shooters, transcode video, do multitrack audio editing, and even on this $100 AMD Hexacore it just chews through the tasks with ease, and the money I saved on the CPU lets me get more powerful parts where it DOES matter, like faster GPU, more RAM, and an SSD for caching I'm gonna pick up after the silly season. Plus being able to go from a single to a dual to a quad without replacing the board or any other parts? Niiice, and as a bonus when I decided to go hexa I could just pass that quad and board to the youngest who is blasting through his MMOs without a bit of trouble.
Only advice i'd add is for those that are just switching? don't bother with the stock AMD coolers as they are crap, pick up a Coolermaster 212 or N520, they can be had for under $40 (under $20 for the 212), they fit in any mATX case no problem, and they really do make a BIG difference when it comes to temps. I went from an idle of 112f and load of nearly 140f on stock to an idle of 84f and a max load of 128f on the N520 with just the stock Coolmaster paste that is included, I changed that for Arctic Silver with the oldest boy's X6 and dropped 4f idle and 7f load, so well worth the $34 for the cooler.

Now let me tell you about reality, and the simple fact and reality of ARM is it can't even manage the IPC of an 8 year old netburst P4, it sure as hell isn't gonna get enough IPC to run triple A rated games. Hell even the ARM holdings group has realized this, which is why their last couple of talks have been about "dark silicon" because you can't turn all of the chip on at once without killing the battery or slamming into the thermal wall just as X86 did around 4Ghz. This is why you see Nvidia piling 5 cores into its latest Tegra, because they can't get the single core IPC up enough to make up for the weakness of the ARM core so they are throwing more cores at it, but anybody that has run any kind of modern gaming benchmarks can tell you most games will NOT gain from multiple cores, at best they need one "supercore" for the main game and a few weaker cores to take sound, pathfinding, etc.
So the only way ARM is gonna be a "gaming platform' is if you specify gaming to ONLY be the "cut the rope, Angry Birds' casual games. try to do a Crysis 3 or gears of War on ARM would be an uberfail, it just doesn't have the IPC to deal with the physics, ragdolls, fire and water effects, it just won't cut the mustard. ARM is designed for low power and just doesn't scale, in fact it'll be easier for Intel to scale down to meet ARM's power than it will be for ARM to scale up, just because intel has such a huge lead on IPC they could cut the chip performance of a Core i3 in half and still curbstomp ARM.
That's not to say ARM is a bad chip for mobile or embedded, its just not made for the heavy lifting required to give people AAA gaming, not anywhere even close to what X86 was cranking out 6 years ago much less the latest stuff, it would be like trying to replace a semi with a moped, it may be cheaper on gas but it just can't carry the load.

I mean sure if all you do is play angry birds and facebook games then ARM is just fine, but those kind of people frankly won't give a shit if its a black box or not, see the lines for the latest iDevices.

As for me this is all the more reason to continue buying AMD, as all my games play fine, I went from a single to a dual to a quad on my last board and on this one I can go up to the latest 8 cores if I want (although those $100 6 core Phenoms are nice enough for me) and most importantly I'm not having to throw the whole damned thing out if I need more speed down the road. if this kind of bullshit had been in place I'd be on my fifth board now instead of my second, and when you figure in how much higher the boards would be if you were stuck with whatever CPU they soldered in? NOT a smart buy. I have a feeling the big board companies like AsusRock and Gigabyte will be pushing AMD, not like they've got a choice as Intel would be doing to them what they did to Nvidia.

Want some good AI? Play Far Cry 1 (Do NOT play Far Cry 2, its so retarded they had to come up with an in game excuse to why so many guys on your side is shooting at you), play Fear 1&2, I like the Crysis series although they don't come up to Far Cry 1 levels, I also like the Deus Ex series although again, not as good as Far Cry 1 and Fear AI.
To me good AI doesn't have to be brilliant, just make me work for it, like the way I'd have to look for any ways I could be snuck up on in Fear and place mines, or have an exit strategy like in Far Cry or Crysis.
This is why I will always look for games that have mods, because often a mod can make a bad game good and a good game great. take your Bioshock example, there is a mod called "Bioshock for real" or something like that that will make that game so damned hard you won't believe you are playing the same game. you get different amounts for killing the sisters (thus putting an actual moral choice in it) and you won't be getting much of nothing from the bad guys and hacking? fucking HARD and you won't get any great rewards for pulling it off, just slightly lower prices which with money so scarce you'll be damned grateful for.
But I agree, even though I looove the Bioshock series (yes I even loved the second one, Minerva's Den i thought was nearly as good as the first game) the game devs are obviously more about telling a story than beating the player. While I think this is fine i do prefer games where there is a hard level that is REAL hard, so if I'm not feeling challenged I can ramp up. For the games that don't though, give me mods. Frankly I haven't seen a game that mods can't make better, from the dozens of new systems in Freelancer to taping the flashlight to the gun in doom 3, mods can fix a LOT of problems.
That is why I like sandboxes like Just Cause II and Saints Row III, while they are open as hell and you can just ignore the missions if you want there is still a story with a beginning, middle and end. That explains why I also have never been able to get into MMOs, I like having something other than a hamster wheel as a goal. But thinking of it as a toy rather than a game? something I haven't thought of, but makes sense.

And the simple fact is look on project greenlight, you have more games being chosen per day than you could possibly ever play, and nearly all the indies are old school and like old school gameplay which includes SSMP, but not only that but there are so many FTP MMOs on there now it isn't even funny. So you are talking about dozens if not hundreds of free games to play right off the bat, no worry about them getting some game with malware off of Steam, nearly every game that has come out in the past few years supports the X360 controller, and unlike the consoles it can game AND IM AND surf AND watch YouTube AND be a media tank AND do any other task a full fledged PC can do. When a PC can't game anymore there are plenty of other uses for it, bedroom PC or media tank or office box, when that console isn't supported anymore? into the closet it goes. i know because my youngest was into consoles and handhelds for the longest time and he has a fricking pile of them gathering dust, PSP, DS, Wii, Xbox 1, PS 1, Dreamcast, Gamecube, all of them gathering dust. Meanwhile the PC I gave him to game on 8 years ago is now an office box for a former neighbor, got enough for his old game PC to buy him more RAM for his new system.
So unless you can point out a section of TFA I missed where he imposed these limitations you are just coming up with hoops to jump that frankly in all likelihood don't even exist IRL. How about F.E.A.R. 3, or how they spelled F3AR, should have known off the bat when they do a douchey letter to numbers switch we were in trouble, but fuuuck! Fear 1 & 2 were fricking great! Bad guys smart, weapons satisfying, sure the horror didn't work but like Yahtzee said "The only way to have horror in an FPS is to tape a picture of Dracula to your iron sights" but it was still FUN with a capital F, so the third HAS to be good right? Nope, AI retarded, weapons are WORTHLESS, and I mean that, if you haven't played it there is not ONE truly good weapon in the whole fucking game, I mean you can only carry 36 fucking bullets for the pistol? WTF? My out of shape ass can carry more than 36 9mm rounds! Levels bland, and the whole thing took what was a great franchise and turned it into a bunch of co-op maps with bad weapons. Frankly it would not surprise me to find out like Mario 2 that this was some other game that someone just slapped the Fear name and characters in to make a quick buck.
So I have to agree with TFA, especially on shooters, sure they look great but where is the FUN? Where is the next funny shooter like No One Lives Forever, where I can set kitty bombs and giggle as a bad guy walks up and goes "ohh, its a kitten...meow BOOM!" or the next Far Cry or Fear where the AI uses squad tactics and makes me feel that sense of "fuck yeah! You didn't see THAT coming did you?" when you manage to set up an ambush? Where is the next Painkiller or Crysis that gives me some really bad ass weapons instead of the same shit they hand us in every game, so i feel like Arnie or Stallone starring in my own action flick?
Sure the VISUALS have gotten better, but everything else took a wrong turn and ended up in shit town. The weapons unsatisfying, AI Forest Gump stupid, levels boring, it all feels like a fricking chore.
See this is what I don't get, how does "measuring" them make you win? That is like saying if you can take a measurement of the fish in the water he'll jump right into the boat. The PS3 cost so much because of BD not because of the RAM, and again we are talking about an 800 pound gorilla that is in bed tight with the GPU manufacturers thanks to DirectX....you telling me MSFT couldn't pick up a phone and get a good deal on GDDR3 when we are talking EXCLUSIVE CONTRACT to make RAM that will go into millions of units?

He didn't say a thing about the Wii, because Nintendo targets a different demographic than the one MSFT is after, so they really don't care about the Wii as you don't see the hardcore players getting down to some Animal Crossing, they are all playing shooters, which is MSFT and Sony.
And in case you haven't heard Sony has been bleeding money for several quarters now, we are talking serious losses, so all it would take is for MSFT to release a monster to crush Sony like a bug. It has already been reported that Sony is going with a COTS AMD APU because they simply don't have the money to build another monster (last figures were a billion dollars for the PS3 R&D) so not only does MSFT know what the competition is doing, they also know that one more good smack would be all it would take, they could let Nintendo take the casuals while they take the hardcore and leave Sony out in the cold.
but the reason that they won't pull the trigger on Sony isn't IMHO worries about anti-trust, its the fact that the board is probably shitting puppies right now over the fact that their billion dollar marketing campaign for Win "Cellphone" 8 has been a giant bust and its looking to be another Vista, so sinking another couple of billion so soon after getting a body blow like that probably ain't real high on the board's priorities. More likely they'll bump up the speed and RAM and add a hotter GPU and it'll be more of a "360+" than a true next gen, because they have bigger fish to fry, like how to get a foothold in mobile and what to do about nobody buying their latest OS.
Why did he get modded down when that is pretty much it in a nutshell? Nintendo bought a chip that is barely more powerful than the one they have in the Wii and expect devs to deal with it by using the more powerful GPU instead. Problem is with more and more games having tons of physics and ragdolls and the like there is only so much a powerful GPU will cover for before you end up gimped by the CPU.
Hell this is pretty much the same strategy AMD has been using for a couple of generations now and they aren't doing so hot either, are they? It all comes down to a balancing act and Nintendo just went too far when it came to how weak a CPU they could get away with, simple as that. My guess is because they are gonna be targeting casual gamers they figure its enough to run Mario and Animal Crossing and so they figure its "good enough". Lets be honest folks, Nintindo hasn't gone for the hardcore players for a couple of generations now, so it should be of no surprise that their new system just can't run the hardcore shooters that are the hallmark of the hardcore gamers.
