How exactly is it bullshit? WinXP is still the most popular OS by far and in a few short weeks with the release of IE 9 will be stuck with an outdated browser. Due to bad design decisions at MSFT that cause IE in XP hook deep into the system and files connected to it required to run Windows Update (which you can check yourself by running one of several "IE Removal Tools" which actually remove IE instead of hide it from view) make it even more attractive and dangerous.Finally as long as WinXP is supported what features Vista and 7 have is irrelevant as I showed above they are by far the minority when it comes to IE.
And then finally you have the actions of the MSFT "security team" themselves. While the other browser makers opened support tickets and continued working with the writer right up until release MSFT closed the ticket and cut off contact with the writer until he told them he would release into the wild, which then got back responses like "PR Nightmare" and who then tried to stall for time by saying it wasn't replicable with the July tool even though after confirmation by the writer that yes, the July tool found the same bugs they admitted they found that as well and couldn't explain cutting the support ticket but I can.
If you look up the history of the IE security team you'll see time and time again researchers finding bugs, doing the right thing and handing the info to MSFT, only to have the bug ignored until they threaten or release into the wild. This has happened over and over again. so why you would say it is bullshit when we have a history of being a day late and a dollar short is beyond me. And why anyone would use IE in this day and age when there are much safer browsers out there where the teams behind it seem to really be on the ball and listen is frankly more than a little crazy. Finally I know this is only an anecdote but here in the shop I've found by moving users away from IE I've had their rate of infection drop by a good 75% on fully patched XP machines tells me all I need to know in all honestly. IE simply isn't safe for general usage, and I've seen that with my very own peepers. Believe what you want.

Actually there IS an easy way to sandbox everything, it just isn't made by MSFT. For the clueless or unsuspecting just give them a combination of Comodo Antivirus or Internet Security (both free) and Comodo Time Machine which is also free. Comodo AV will by default sandbox everything unless specifically told not to, with full file and registry virtualization, and I have gotten several reports from customers and family members that it has stopped some serious nasties when they clicked the wrong link.
I consider Comodo Time Machine the flip side of that coin, protecting the user from themselves and their families stupidity the way Comodo AV protects them from the web. My GF is currently having to live two hours away to help with the family farm after her father had a heart attack. One day she forgot to log off before going out to make rounds on the farm and her niece got into her admin account and somehow managed to completely trash the system32 folder. Thanks to Time Machine I was able to walk her through by phone a complete restore of a machine that wouldn't even boot, and it took less than 15 minutes. Just press F11 when you see the Comodo Clock, tell the program where you want to go back to, and let it go. It was just that easy and in less than 15 minutes she was back to a perfectly running desktop.
So believe me, between dealing with clueless customers and family members that can pick up more viruses than a Bangkok whore any solution I recommend has been put through some serious stress testing, and those two Comodo apps put together makes for a pretty much idiot proof Windows. With that combo pretty much the only thing you can't fix by phone is a HDD failure, and since I recommend USB HDDs for backups set to auto backup their important folders and image the OS drive even that can be restored to health by me in less than an hour. It is a lot less stressful for them, and a lot less work for me. I'd call that a win/win all around.

I still remember holding my first 1GB drive in my hand and thinking "How in the hell am I ever gonna use this much space?" and then in what seemed like the blink of an eye I', holding a 40GB and thinking "Now what? Even if I install every app and game I ever liked I'm STILL not gonna be able to fill this thing!". Now I have dual 500Gb drives onboard, with another 1TB USB for backups, and instead of being marveled at the space I'm just waiting for the 2TB drives to come down to yank the 500GB. And this flash stick, no bigger than a stick of gum, at 8GB has more space than my first 8 drives put together. My first flash was $100 for 64MB and I thought "Wow,dozens of floppies in my pocket! What will I do with it all?" Man times they do change. Now get off my lawn!
Exactly. It really doesn't matter if you have the slowest (and thus longer lasting and cheaper to operate) HDD on the planet if all the important data is in RAM and kept there. RAM since DDR has gotten so ridiculously fast that NO SSD has a snowball's chance of catching up anytime soon, if at all, and the economies of scale have made RAM one of the cheapest if not the cheapest upgrades you can add to any system.
Even in the consumer market falling RAM prices and changes to OS design make the hard drive pretty much a backup and long term storage medium more than anything else. I advise my customers on new builds to go ahead and let me install 4GB, because with Superfetch after a week of Windows 7 learning their usage patterns all of their apps are preloaded into RAM making launching and using instantaneous, and with suspend to RAM booting is pretty much a thing of the past. It cost less than $100 to add 8GB to mine and now everything I use is ALWAYS preloaded, making the speed just insane. Everyone that comes by the shop is always amazed at how I can launch a half a dozen apps while another 4 or 5 are doing various jobs and it is always instantaneous. But with 6GB reserved by the OS for Superfetch all the apps I use are simply waiting for me in RAM.
So I have to agree with TFA. With the prices of RAM cheap and only getting cheaper having data you actually use often needing to swap in and out of the HDD or SSD is just nuts. And then if you have it all in RAM you can use the lower speed and less power hungry "green" drives for persistent backup instead of using SSDs which haven't come anywhere near the GB per $ ratio of spinning platters yet, although their speed is incredible. But if everything is already in RAM, do you really need to spend the crazy $$$ for the large SSD?
I'll add another "legal user gets screwed" anecdote to yours showing why this crap sucks: Older Games. My older games play just fine on Windows 7 HP X64, hell thanks to MSFT's backwards compatibility they work without a hitch. What DOESN'T work is the &*^%*^&%*&%^* ring 0 DRM garbage! If you are lucky all you get is classic "insert disc" even though the disc IS inserted, and if you are not? Well lets just say I hope you have a dual boot or a very recent backup, because the ring 0 crap will turn your OS into a crashing unstable nightmare.
WARNING: Many of the older SecuROM and Starforce ring 0 "drivers" WILL NOT UNINSTALL ON X64! which means if it makes your OS an unstable mess you better be able to dual boot to rip it out from another OS, or be ready to restore from backup. Their "uninstallers" hosted on their websites DO NOT WORK ON X64, yet their garbage ring 0 DRM crap will happily try to jam its X86 buggy poo code right into your X64 kernel. What fun! How they are allowed to get away with that kind of behavior I don't know, because it IS malware, no different than Sony's rootkit or any other nasty your would pick up from the web. Can you uninstall it? Nope, just like malware. Does it cause instability? Yep, again just like malware. Finally do you have to have detailed knowledge of its inner workings just to remove it, such as which reg keys to toss or which hidden files are buried deep in system folders? Yep, strike three and you're out. If it walks like a duck and quacks it is a fricking duck folks.
That is why I pretty much shop exclusively at Good Old Games now. I like to be able to replay a game I liked, not just shitcan it because I have a new OS or the company doesn't "support" it anymore. With GOG there is NO DRM, NO phoning home, No limits to how many machines I can install it to that I own, NO limits to how many times I can redownload it and NO *&^%$*&$*& "Game Client" or other BS I have to run in the background just to use what I fricking paid for. If you haven't tried them they are having a massive holiday sale with nearly 300 games on sale, many of them half off their already cheap prices. They have something for everyone, shooters, RPGs, flight sims (including IL2 with all the expansions built in), puzzlers, platformers, you name it. So support the company that actually treats you like a customer and not a criminal, buy from GOG. This is a classic example where we can "vote with our dollars" and show companies that placing their games on GOG is a wise move. Oh and all games have been tested on X64 as well as X86 so no troubles! It all "just works" OOTB, but if you do run into a glitch their forums are top notch. Enjoy some DRM free gaming today!

I just got finished installing a Quantum Fireball 18.2Gb yesterday. A frequent customer wanted to know if I had any older machines lying around because he needed a replacement for the PC he used to control his laser cutting table and I told him I had enough parts lying in the back to Frankenstein him something together. I slapped the Fireball into a 1.0GHz Celeron board I had left from a customer upgrade awhile back, along with 512Mb of PC100 and he is a happy little camper. Funny part is the XP Pro license he handed me to put on it was worth more than the box it was going on, but hey, whatever makes the customer happy. It is now sitting in the corner of his shop quietly cutting the parts to a new model gas rig he is fabricating for a client.
It just goes to show ya never know when them old parts in the bin might be useful for something. And if you ever need some weird older part be sure to check out your local mom&pop repair shop. We hate to throw anything running away so it is like a flea market of older tech stuff in the back of most shops. BS with the guy running it for a little while and we'll be happy to let you pick through the bins. And it never hurts to have a shop willing to help you out, as David would have been hurting if he hadn't come up with a replacement ASAP and I know on those models he gets paid upon completion so I was more than happy to let him just carry it out and bring me a check at the end of the week. As for TFA, don't waste your time. I don't mind the slide-show format as long as there is some information in the slides but the info contained wouldn't even qualify for the blurb under the pics at Wikipedia. And they seemed to waste about 1/3 of the slides going over RAMDAC. Surely they could have come up with better items instead? Maybe show the dead ends, like Core and Bubble? While this is true, with analog you get a kind of "warmth" that is simply hard to get out of digital. Compare a digital amp to a good tube one, no comparison. And even though digital recording is cleaner often you will run a tube preamp just to give a track a little "breathing room" but even then it will never have the natural sound of a good 8 track studio rig.

How exactly is it bullshit? WinXP is still the most popular OS by far and in a few short weeks with the release of IE 9 will be stuck with an outdated browser. Due to bad design decisions at MSFT that cause IE in XP hook deep into the system and files connected to it required to run Windows Update (which you can check yourself by running one of several "IE Removal Tools" which actually remove IE instead of hide it from view) make it even more attractive and dangerous.Finally as long as WinXP is supported what features Vista and 7 have is irrelevant as I showed above they are by far the minority when it comes to IE.
And then finally you have the actions of the MSFT "security team" themselves. While the other browser makers opened support tickets and continued working with the writer right up until release MSFT closed the ticket and cut off contact with the writer until he told them he would release into the wild, which then got back responses like "PR Nightmare" and who then tried to stall for time by saying it wasn't replicable with the July tool even though after confirmation by the writer that yes, the July tool found the same bugs they admitted they found that as well and couldn't explain cutting the support ticket but I can.
If you look up the history of the IE security team you'll see time and time again researchers finding bugs, doing the right thing and handing the info to MSFT, only to have the bug ignored until they threaten or release into the wild. This has happened over and over again. so why you would say it is bullshit when we have a history of being a day late and a dollar short is beyond me. And why anyone would use IE in this day and age when there are much safer browsers out there where the teams behind it seem to really be on the ball and listen is frankly more than a little crazy. Finally I know this is only an anecdote but here in the shop I've found by moving users away from IE I've had their rate of infection drop by a good 75% on fully patched XP machines tells me all I need to know in all honestly. IE simply isn't safe for general usage, and I've seen that with my very own peepers. Believe what you want.

Hell I'm an agnostic atheist and even I can see how lopsided these new laws and rules are being applied. Hell in many places in the USA whites aren't even the majority anymore but I don't see them getting any special treatment as a "minority" do you? Actually there IS an easy way to sandbox everything, it just isn't made by MSFT. For the clueless or unsuspecting just give them a combination of Comodo Antivirus or Internet Security (both free) and Comodo Time Machine which is also free. Comodo AV will by default sandbox everything unless specifically told not to, with full file and registry virtualization, and I have gotten several reports from customers and family members that it has stopped some serious nasties when they clicked the wrong link.
I consider Comodo Time Machine the flip side of that coin, protecting the user from themselves and their families stupidity the way Comodo AV protects them from the web. My GF is currently having to live two hours away to help with the family farm after her father had a heart attack. One day she forgot to log off before going out to make rounds on the farm and her niece got into her admin account and somehow managed to completely trash the system32 folder. Thanks to Time Machine I was able to walk her through by phone a complete restore of a machine that wouldn't even boot, and it took less than 15 minutes. Just press F11 when you see the Comodo Clock, tell the program where you want to go back to, and let it go. It was just that easy and in less than 15 minutes she was back to a perfectly running desktop.
So believe me, between dealing with clueless customers and family members that can pick up more viruses than a Bangkok whore any solution I recommend has been put through some serious stress testing, and those two Comodo apps put together makes for a pretty much idiot proof Windows. With that combo pretty much the only thing you can't fix by phone is a HDD failure, and since I recommend USB HDDs for backups set to auto backup their important folders and image the OS drive even that can be restored to health by me in less than an hour. It is a lot less stressful for them, and a lot less work for me. I'd call that a win/win all around.
It is called "Windows Live Mail" now, and I expect to be getting a call from my dad any minute wanting to know "how I can make his letters come back". At least in my experience Hotmail/WLmail is popular with the old folks who've had an account since it was just Hotmail,Gmail is popular with geeks and those that live on chat apps, and Yahoo Mail is big with everybody else.
As for your "Windows equals data loss" crack, I'm typing this on a 2004 XP box that has never lost so much as a single file. When you realize that many of those on Windows frankly don't know the first thing about PCs, we're talking asking where the any key is or falling for email spam, well then you have to give MSFT credit for designing an OS that lasts any time at all with the masses. But there are a couple of BIG differences between IE and the others that mean they should always looked at with more suspicion and scorn, and I'm a Windows guy. 1.-Refusing to backport IE 9 to XP means you are gonna have hundreds of millions of IE installs running on old versions, 2.- Thanks to their idiotic "Hey lets all run as admin!" design of XP when combined with IE just increases the risk of nasty, and 3.- the webkit based browsers, such as Chrome, Dragon, Safari, SWIron, etc at least attempt to sandbox the browser, whereas MSFT to kill off competition buried IE deeply into the system making IE the more dangerous choice.
Finally since you read TFA you would see that while the others kept working with the writer MSFT closed the ticket and cut off communication right up to when he said he would release even though the writer was able to replicate the bugs with the July tool and so was MSFT. Then when he was ready to release did they begin talking about "PR nightmare" instead of actually seeming concerned with the security of their browser. Lets be honest folks, IE was nothing but a tool to kill Netscape and once it had accomplished its goal it was left to rot. You had millions infected thanks to their lax treatment of security via IE 6, and they are just now trying to get to where everyone else was a year ago. Considering your browser is the closest your OS gets to being "bare metal" with the wild and woolly Internet trusting your machine to a browser that is only updated on patch Tuesday unless something completely embarrassing hits is more than a little nuts.
One of the nice things we have today is plenty of free choices is that department and thanks to the scourge of "This site requires IE" being all but a distant memory getting folks away from IE has never been easier. Just send them to Ninite and tell them which box to check. It is really just that easy. But trusting the weakest part of your security to a browser that always seems to be a day late, a dollar short, and has the biggest bullseye painted on it? There is a good reason to always assume the worst when it comes to IE, it is because that has been time and time again what you got.
The problem with your logic is this: Those billions in India and China are A.- In the third world where anything more powerful than the moped powered quadracycle will cost more than a year's wages, and B.-Due to all the jobs being in highly packed urban centers it will be cheaper and more efficient for them to simply take the bus/rail which a good portion of the USA simply doesn't have and is doubtful they will be getting any real public transport anytime soon, since we are big on "government is bad" ATM and pretty much the only way to make rail and or busing affordable in the vast areas of the USA would be to subsidize them.
Then you figure in that most inner cities are hellholes and you can see why urban sprawl won't be going anywhere. I live about 45 minutes from the capital, by having that amount of distance between me and the major population center I have a nice large apt in a nice neighborhood and can walk to the local Walgreen's at 3AM and the worst I'll encounter is someone asking if I have a cigarette they can bum. Compare that to when I lived in the capital where 4 times what I'm paying now got me a dinky apt where the sounds of gunfire and sirens were pretty much an every night occurrence, where you sure as hell weren't walking or riding a bicycle anyway, not unless you liked taking your life in your hands, and where if you didn't pay extra to have your vehicle stowed in a secure car park when not in use you would come out to find it on blocks with the stereo and battery gone to boot.
So even if the price hits $200 a barrel I'll just borrow a relative's beep beep car for long trips and keep my nice paid for 14MPG Ranger and my nice bullet free apt, thanks ever so much. Hey! Quit making us greaybeards feel old! I still remember holding my first 1GB drive in my hand and thinking "How in the hell am I ever gonna use this much space?" and then in what seemed like the blink of an eye I', holding a 40GB and thinking "Now what? Even if I install every app and game I ever liked I'm STILL not gonna be able to fill this thing!". Now I have dual 500Gb drives onboard, with another 1TB USB for backups, and instead of being marveled at the space I'm just waiting for the 2TB drives to come down to yank the 500GB. And this flash stick, no bigger than a stick of gum, at 8GB has more space than my first 8 drives put together. My first flash was $100 for 64MB and I thought "Wow,dozens of floppies in my pocket! What will I do with it all?" Man times they do change. Now get off my lawn!
Exactly. It really doesn't matter if you have the slowest (and thus longer lasting and cheaper to operate) HDD on the planet if all the important data is in RAM and kept there. RAM since DDR has gotten so ridiculously fast that NO SSD has a snowball's chance of catching up anytime soon, if at all, and the economies of scale have made RAM one of the cheapest if not the cheapest upgrades you can add to any system.
Even in the consumer market falling RAM prices and changes to OS design make the hard drive pretty much a backup and long term storage medium more than anything else. I advise my customers on new builds to go ahead and let me install 4GB, because with Superfetch after a week of Windows 7 learning their usage patterns all of their apps are preloaded into RAM making launching and using instantaneous, and with suspend to RAM booting is pretty much a thing of the past. It cost less than $100 to add 8GB to mine and now everything I use is ALWAYS preloaded, making the speed just insane. Everyone that comes by the shop is always amazed at how I can launch a half a dozen apps while another 4 or 5 are doing various jobs and it is always instantaneous. But with 6GB reserved by the OS for Superfetch all the apps I use are simply waiting for me in RAM.
So I have to agree with TFA. With the prices of RAM cheap and only getting cheaper having data you actually use often needing to swap in and out of the HDD or SSD is just nuts. And then if you have it all in RAM you can use the lower speed and less power hungry "green" drives for persistent backup instead of using SSDs which haven't come anywhere near the GB per $ ratio of spinning platters yet, although their speed is incredible. But if everything is already in RAM, do you really need to spend the crazy $$$ for the large SSD?
I'll add another "legal user gets screwed" anecdote to yours showing why this crap sucks: Older Games. My older games play just fine on Windows 7 HP X64, hell thanks to MSFT's backwards compatibility they work without a hitch. What DOESN'T work is the &*^%*^&%*&%^* ring 0 DRM garbage! If you are lucky all you get is classic "insert disc" even though the disc IS inserted, and if you are not? Well lets just say I hope you have a dual boot or a very recent backup, because the ring 0 crap will turn your OS into a crashing unstable nightmare.
WARNING: Many of the older SecuROM and Starforce ring 0 "drivers" WILL NOT UNINSTALL ON X64! which means if it makes your OS an unstable mess you better be able to dual boot to rip it out from another OS, or be ready to restore from backup. Their "uninstallers" hosted on their websites DO NOT WORK ON X64, yet their garbage ring 0 DRM crap will happily try to jam its X86 buggy poo code right into your X64 kernel. What fun! How they are allowed to get away with that kind of behavior I don't know, because it IS malware, no different than Sony's rootkit or any other nasty your would pick up from the web. Can you uninstall it? Nope, just like malware. Does it cause instability? Yep, again just like malware. Finally do you have to have detailed knowledge of its inner workings just to remove it, such as which reg keys to toss or which hidden files are buried deep in system folders? Yep, strike three and you're out. If it walks like a duck and quacks it is a fricking duck folks.
That is why I pretty much shop exclusively at Good Old Games now. I like to be able to replay a game I liked, not just shitcan it because I have a new OS or the company doesn't "support" it anymore. With GOG there is NO DRM, NO phoning home, No limits to how many machines I can install it to that I own, NO limits to how many times I can redownload it and NO *&^%$*&$*& "Game Client" or other BS I have to run in the background just to use what I fricking paid for. If you haven't tried them they are having a massive holiday sale with nearly 300 games on sale, many of them half off their already cheap prices. They have something for everyone, shooters, RPGs, flight sims (including IL2 with all the expansions built in), puzzlers, platformers, you name it. So support the company that actually treats you like a customer and not a criminal, buy from GOG. This is a classic example where we can "vote with our dollars" and show companies that placing their games on GOG is a wise move. I have also shown repeatedly that at the absolute reported minimum number of new pieces of malware and website infections, which Petey is free to pick whichever reputable website he likes Securina, MSFT's malware reports, AVG, which ever, that at an absolute minimum we are talking about 1.2 million sites PER DAY with that number changing by 15,000+ PER HOUR which means even if he typed at 1 IP address PER SECOND, and never slept, and had a perfect list (which doesn't exist) he would be 14 days behind by the very first day with that number growing linearly every single day, making Petey farther and farther behind.
But if Petey wasn't completely batshit insane I wouldn't have to explain this, because this is why everyone makes fun of him. it is so obvious it is like someone arguing gravity is actually invisible pants gnomes trying to steal your underwear. It is the classic "default allow" which has NEVER EVER worked. Because if a piece of malware isn't in Petey's magical HOPES file he is royally fucked, and yet again I have shown that it is simply a roll of the dice whether he gets creamed or not, simply because he will always be behind. I just got finished installing a Quantum Fireball 18.2Gb yesterday. A frequent customer wanted to know if I had any older machines lying around because he needed a replacement for the PC he used to control his laser cutting table and I told him I had enough parts lying in the back to Frankenstein him something together. I slapped the Fireball into a 1.0GHz Celeron board I had left from a customer upgrade awhile back, along with 512Mb of PC100 and he is a happy little camper. Funny part is the XP Pro license he handed me to put on it was worth more than the box it was going on, but hey, whatever makes the customer happy. It is now sitting in the corner of his shop quietly cutting the parts to a new model gas rig he is fabricating for a client.
It just goes to show ya never know when them old parts in the bin might be useful for something. And if you ever need some weird older part be sure to check out your local mom&pop repair shop. We hate to throw anything running away so it is like a flea market of older tech stuff in the back of most shops. BS with the guy running it for a little while and we'll be happy to let you pick through the bins. And it never hurts to have a shop willing to help you out, as David would have been hurting if he hadn't come up with a replacement ASAP and I know on those models he gets paid upon completion so I was more than happy to let him just carry it out and bring me a check at the end of the week. Always better to help out a good customer, keeps them coming back ya know.
As for TFA, don't waste your time. I don't mind the slide-show format as long as there is some information in the slides but the info contained wouldn't even qualify for the blurb under the pics at Wikipedia. And they seemed to waste about 1/3 of the slides going over RAMDAC. Surely they could have come up with better items instead? Maybe show the dead ends, like Core and Bubble? Or how perpendicular recording has suddenly given us another size boost? I've heard of slie-shows that were just some copypasta to get page views but this is beyond anemic. This is supposed to be news for nerds, and this thing is about like something you'd use to show your grandma what a hard drive was.

While this is true, with analog you get a kind of "warmth" that is simply hard to get out of digital. Compare a digital amp to a good tube one, no comparison. And even though digital recording is cleaner often you will run a tube preamp just to give a track a little "breathing room" but even then it will never have the natural sound of a good 8 track studio rig.
Sadly I can see tube amps easily going the same way as Kodachrome, because for the masses digital modeling amps are "good enough" and like Kodachrome there are simply too few producing the the expendables (tubes) required to keep them going. Hell do they even make classic 8 track studio tapes anymore? it seems like in our society "good enough" is the eternal enemy of great.
