  1. Re:So...... on Game Tech: How BioShock Infinite's Lighting Works · · Score: 1

The only thing that amazed me about Infinite was...how lame it was.

I'm sorry but as a die hard Bioshock fan (I even bought the Minerva DLC on release day even though frankly Bioshock II wasn't as good story wise as 1 and the protagonist of 2 was the definition of irritating) I could not believe how bad they fucked up the core combat, it was terrible! The guns not only had the lame Halo 2 gun rule but honestly they were not only not fun to use but the muscle bound "hero" could carry less bullets than my out of shape behind! But the plasmids...err vigors, OMFG WTF were they thinking? Not only was the range so underwhelming that you might as well just shoot the bad guy but they just weren't fun to use. I ended up sticking to just two (seduction and electric) because the rest just weren't fun. And the gears were just a waste and it made it even more painfully obvious that ALL the designers wanted you to do was use the fucking hook, I mean something like 70%+ of the gears revolved around the damned hook! I could hear Jeff Goldblum doing an Ian Malcom "Uhh there is going to be shooting in your first person shooter...yes?" the whole time because it felt like the designers fell in love with the hook (that was fun for a little bit but quickly became annoying) and the forgot to do anything else. Don't get me wrong, the story was decent (with the exception of a super lame face heel turn, you know the one) but a story without a decent game to back it up just isn't very good.

So while Bioshock I and II (along with the excellent Minerva, better story than II had IMHO) will always have a place on my drive as soon as I play Burial At Sea II I'll be uninstalling Infinite, most likely never to play again. Its not as broken as F3AR was but it really wasn't enjoyable, I ended up just slogging through to get to the next story bit, strictly a 1 and done for me and considering the low sales and studio closing I can only hope the next game under new management will wrap a decent story with enjoyable gameplay again.

Honestly the only young folks I found with TVs were the really poor, those without net use TV as a form of cheap entertainment. Even my fiance who swore "I'm not gonna be able to stand going without TV" when she moved in has been TV free for almost a year and the USB cap card I gave her for her lappy sits unused. I got news for ya pal, I fix the systems that get pwned 6 days a week and I can tell ya that hasn't been even a major, much less main, source of infections since 2004 or so. How do Windows systems get infected? The same way this page shows you how to infect a Linux system in just 5 steps through good old fashioned social engineering. Here are the top sources of infections I see at the shop, I see these constantly..

1.- "You want to see teh hot lesbos? Just give us all your info on this page (so we can pull an ID theft while infecting you with drivebys) so you can get your prize u lucky dog!"

These work on ANY system because they target the weakest point, THE USER. As a matter of fact I've been seeing a sharp rise in infected Android smartphones and ID thefts from that last one. It seems that folks just can't equate one system to another so all those scams that haven't worked on a PC in a decade? Work great on a smartphone. Its endless September all over again. BTW please note that in NONE of those, nor in the Linux example does the OS matter because the weak spot hasn't been the OS in ages, the easy target has been and always will be the users.

What you have to have is dozens of highly skilled, highly trained guys working on this stuff 8-12 hours a day every day...the requires funds folks, no way you can get around that.

What does that have to do with RMS giving corps the bird with GPL V3? Simple...where do you think ALL that money was coming from? Donations by individuals? Nope that was all being paid for by corps whom RMS made clear aren't welcome round here anymore. with GPL V2 you had kind of a "wink wink" with the corps while GPL V3 has made sure that you had better be a GPLed company if you want anything to do with GPL V3 code. This is why Google has a "No GPL V3" rule with ChromeOS and Android, and I have no doubt you'll be seeing money dry up for projects like GCC, simply because companies will be afraid to touch it.

At the end of the day encouraging corps to open their code is fine, flipping them the bird if they refuse to go GPL? Not the smartest thing. We should be able to tell within the next year whether all the money is gonna go to GCC or LLVM/Clang, I personally think it'll be the latter.
