    My totally uneducated guess :

If the software can be used for legitimate poiposes, then you could argue any illegal usage is the fault of the user

    However if the software

illegal activities, then the fault lies with the programmer

  2. A quick experiment i did.. on The Dismounted Soldier Problem · · Score: 1

After reading this, i went out into my hallway, and shut my eyes, tilted my head (ear touching shoulder) and tried to walk in a straight line. If my head was leaning on the right, i would bump into the left wall, and vice versa.

  3. Dont let the feet touch the ground.. on The Dismounted Soldier Problem · · Score: 2

The problem with walking, is that when people start doing that crazy leg thing, they actually get somewhere.. If that somewhere does not correspond to whats on the VR display, then you have your problem. Solution : Dont let the feet of the walker touch the ground, ie. suspend the 'user' in a harness and attach their legs to an exoskeleton, whilst the 'user' is suspended 30cm (1 foot) off the ground. The exoskeleton serves 3 purposes : 1) Senses leg movements to feed into the VR unit0r. 2) The device can be mechanically active, so that you can have some sort of feedback from the machine. For example, walking 'up-hill' will require more work that going down a hill. 3) Its not every day that you can use the word exoskeleton in meaningful conversation. Josh

I had no option other than viewing porn in b/w, and uploading it to my 512k of memory via the serial port.. These palm pilots now.. well, i guess not only can i view my porn in colour, but i can use the IR interface to upload. Thats nuts :)

But there is one thing that doesnt work with me as far as small devices go... they dont mix with back pockets and a poor memory. Sitting on a palm is no good, and 3 mobile phones... well.. im just not hip to the new microsize millenium vibe.

So we are all leaving our computers on to calculate this stuff... lets say we have 5000 participants over 1 year... (even tho they say they want ppl for 50 years)... computer+monitor == about 200watts.. thats 200 joules per second.. thats like 3x10^13 joules per year... energy sourced primarily from the burning of carbon based fules... What does this relate to in terms of temperature rise ??

but hey, i leave my computers on all the time.. im a slave to uptime

  7. Re:Woohoo! on Monsanto Agrees Not to Sell "Terminator" Seeds · · Score: 2

    Two issues :

    1) Re: Antibiotics.. As a medical student i beleive the only really agricultural issues involved with antibiotic use is in the large mostly unregulated amounts and varieties of antibiotics which are available to farmers for use on livestock. When it comes to this, farily potent chemicals are used with trace amounts being detectable in the end produce, which is then eaten by man. The problem with this is that basically when humans take unrequired antibiotics, they expose the drugs to whatever microbiological species that may be residing in the host human. The result is darwinian evolution leading to selection of micro-organisms that are resistant to the drug. However the importance of trace amounts of antibiotics prolly is quite insignificant compared to the EXCESSIVE amount prescribed by medical practitioners... from memory the french have the worst prescribing habits, followed by australia...

    b) Re: Terminator gene. Although monsanto has canned the terminator gene project, they are now funding for switchable enhancement genes. For example they may design a gene that enables rice to surivive wider ranges of temperatures, but this enhancement would only be active in the presence of a secondary substance that would be added to soil etc... and in the absence of this substance, the rice would revert to being plain old rice..
The socio-economic ramifications of this are obviously not as sharp as those of the terminator gene (which limited the reproductive capabilities of the grain, effectively forcing farmers to purchase grain each season), however from a argo-biochemical perspective i would be VERY interested in the techniques involved in embedding such a regulation mechanism.. and then see if u can get it to factor large polynomials :)
