What you need is some ear training... and learning the language of music. I can't think of any reasons to assevere is better to learn that "outside". The posture and technics depends on the musician, it's like sex, whats good for me doesn't need to be good for ya.
To learn music, you don't need software, find a web page you like, and check the disposition of the strings and tones. What is important is for you to train your ear, that way you'll be able to play anything:
