...But I find this absolutely disgusting.

I'm not some knee-jerking animal rights nut. I'm just a human being. The thought of deliberately breeding living creatures so that they'll become arthritic sickens me.

What gives us the right? How can we do these things to living creatures with minds of their own?

Put yourself in their position. I know that's laying it on a bit thick, but it's at this point that most people start turning away from what anyone says if it's against this kind of thing. They dismiss it as a "silly idea" without actually doing it.

Are scientific advances really worth the equivalent of torture? It depends upon your point of view, I know, but from a moral standpoint, is there any way of justifying this?

(Slashdot being Slashdot, I look forwards to being modded down for this.)

Clamwin antivirus takes up a grand total of 27MB of HD space- definitions included.

Unless this is at least 27 times better, then I can't see any real reason why it should be that much larger.

Your computer does not have enough available hard disk space. Windows OneCare requires at least 550 MB of free space on the system partition to proceed with Setup

550MB? For an antivirus solution? You've got to be kidding.

What on Earth could be taking up that much space?

(Hopefully this will make the scene a lot more vibrant. Things like this worked before- the DC coding contests for example. They were pretty good. Nothing can really help the DC scene now, but they helped at the time.)

This doesn't really affect things in the long term- for all intents and purposes, this is just a change of frontend. It doesn't matter one bit. Firefox isn't about to turn into Opera (Pity).

Safest? I don't know about that. It's certainly the most comfortable to surf with, though. And it doesn't seem to go into convulsions at the sight of Java on my system- which is more than I can say for Firefox. They're pretty much equal in most aspects. But the question we must ask ourselves is why are we bothering with these newfangled, "next gen" browsers when we have a perfectly functional IE6 available right now? We might like the tabbed browsing, and added security, but with Microsoft putting such a herculean effort into patching the holes in IE as soon as they appear, it's not quite as insecure as most make it out to be. Popup blockers can be downloaded for free. It's all that most people want- your average joe won't be fussing about it lacking tabbed browsing or not supporting Foxytunes or the like. Firefox is unnecessary for most people. As is Opera.

...In all seriousness, what are you people complaining about? It still picks up on the program. It still allows you to delete it. People will still delete anything on their systems which the program picks up through sheer paranoia if they're technically illiterate. It's pretty much harmless.

Just remember- Mars can't be terraformed. The gravity is too low to retain a sufficient atmospheric pressure to make it "Terra-like". There isn't enough water. It's too cold. It has too weak a magnetic field. Life could survive there unprotected at a stretch- but we couldn't.
