Apple engineers and beta teams are on vacation until January 3. I don't know if this has already been addressed in the next patch to MacOS 9, but I guess they'll fix it now that it's known. Does this work in older versions of the MacOS?
Does anyone from the vast/. readership know an address or phone number for Mr. Amano's are dealer? I'm honestly interested in purchasing one or more of these paintings, but have had no luck reaching anyone at Vertigo about this.
As a note, this book is fantastic. I couln't reccomend it more, although many of you might want to wait for a trade paperback version rather than the cher hardcover.
I contest the notion that the availability of DVD-ROM drives creates the urge to pirate films. If the proposed changes the the DVD format were enacted, the same Hotline warez kiddies who pipe VCDs out their dormroom ethernet would just hook up a VHS player to their machines.
Multimedia files are no longer beyond the file capacity of home computers. My first CD-ROM drive came with a computer that had a 1 GB drive (Macintosh Quadra 840AV). At that time, although the software for duplication existed, it was hardly logical to make a disk image of Myst.
Although a MS Word file might take up a megabyte instead of 100kB, the 10GB+ drives that come with any new machine reflect the users' desire for media files, be they MP3s, AIFFs, or VCDs. Storing the new NIN or Tori double CDs has become trivial and inexpensive.
It is the state of computing today, of storage and of bandwidth, that allows for personal piracy. Stopping mass duplication and distribution should be the goal of the industries affected. Hampering the technology and the products can only be a shot in the foot.
Well, giving people in a given geographic location the correct.us address would require a major overhaul of the nic.us.
In trying to get my name, a few local interest sites and a company name at.charlottesville.va.us, I found that the registrations are handled by hand, rather than thought the InterNIC-esqe automation we all know and hate.
However, should the nic.us become automated and local governments OK the use of name-based domain names for personal use (at the moment, nic.us infers that you've cleared the domain name *.city.state.us with that city.
I'll apply as soon as I can to get bugger.charlottesville.va.us, feo2.charlottesville.va.us and maxfenton.charlottesville.va.us. but I doubt those will be approved by nic.us
As for the big company coming down on the little guy, I have to side with squatters over corporations, digerati over old business. Hell, if I had reznor.com I'd set up a NIN fanpage, at trent.reznor.com, but that's just me.
As much like Eliza as it is like a William Gibson novel. Is the USPTO so out of it that they can issue a patent for what has been in science fiction for a decade?
And for added benefit, the Star Wars trailer is 2.2:1, but the important part of this "cinema" display is that it takes advantage of a feature on many DVDs that uses the maximum width even if the letterbox bars are cut off. Besides, this monitor can display a full 11x17 page which is just incredible for one of Apple's strongest legacy markets: newspapers and print media.
