  1. Re:VMware? on Microsoft Plans Hypervisor for Longhorn · · Score: 1

VMware is very fast. We use the GSX server version at work. We found using Linux as the host for Windows guests is the most effecient implementation.

Our development and testing environments being used daily by about 12 developers and 3 testers run smooth day in and day out. It's funny how surpsied each of the develoeprs were when they first found out they'd been using Virtual servers for over a year. They were impressed with the speed.

If we were developing for Linux, I'd give Xen a try though. I checked out the link on performance. It's a shame only VMware's workstation version could be compared to. I should install Xen at home and get some experience though.

    Thanks.

You left off my response to support:

In my limited exeperience using support from commercial vendors, in general, it's rarely been adequate support anyways, so if any issues crop up, we fix them ourselves (or with community help).

That's part of my point. Even with required setups, support is more a blame game, and not a real problem solver, at least in my experience. They'll be a tropper with ya on the phone and email tons of documents and utilities, but it's always been internal IT that find root cause and solve any problem. Guess we've just been unlucky with 3rd party support. But it's more a gamble to not have the skilled people on staff.

Incidently, we use Sun to host Oracle. But develpoment systems running gentoo works fine (obviously different loads). But it is easier for us to find contractors with knowledge of Oracle on Sun.

    Thanks.

Little off-topice, but I wanted to share my experience. We've successfully used Gentoo on commercial apps that say they "require" Red Hat. I'm sure other distributions would be similar, but we like the control Gentoo provides. In my limited exeperience using support from commercial vendors, in general, it's rarely been adequate support anyways, so if any issues crop up, we fix them ourselves (or with community help). That's regardless of using the required OS or not.

I work at mostly a Microsoft shop, but the mix of Linux is a great education. Best (and worst) of both worlds I guess. :)

Is there linux proxy I can script against?

Kinda off topice, but regarding hardware compatability, I thought those days were gone. NOT. Here's some lameness I went through:

It took my five years to find there was incompatability between my mobo and scsi controller. Back in 2000 I researched and compared motherboards and Scsi controllers. For the mobo, it seemed I couldn't go wrong with an ASUS board (A7V266-E). I wanted SCSI in my workstation with striping. After researching, comparing, and my pocket book whencing, at the time the best bang/buck seemed to be from ATTO, but I hadn't heard of them... I took a chance and picked one up (UL3D).

I loved the speed, but every blue moon I'd get a blue screen of death, sometimes referencing teh Scsi controller. While waiting for the reboot the prevailing thought running through my head was "God Windows is the suck".

Then I upgraded to GigE. Jumbo frames here I come! My excitement quickly turned to frustration. I couldn't even copy files across the network without a crash! Booting to a ubcd4win disk wasn't any better, so I figured the OS wasn't (completely) to blame with my limited tools at hand. I updated firmwares, Bios, drivers , searched for any information I could find and submitted support requestes to ATTO for information (never got reply). Then I found the answer. The last item in ATTO's "Compatabilty FAQ" mentioned "many models of [motherboards from ASUS, Tyan, and Abit] are incompatible with ATTO SCSI and Fibre Channel adapters." OMFG!!! When was that added?! Wish Atto would have at least told me which models they knew about... *sigh*

All those "random" crashes all those years now explained. I swapped motherboards with my wife's MSI, and BAM! All working great. I'm thinking I won't buy another ATTO product, and probably will skip ASUS too.

This is the year (month?) I am switching to a Linux desktop! Wish me luck. :)

Your use of Proxomitron caught me attention. I use it regularly at work. (Probably typical scenario: developers use Firefox for regular use, but company mandates IE, so we target for IE... slowly getting all developers to `test` in Firefox too.) The log window has helped the team debug some odd session issue. There seem to be some good Linux progs to do the same thing, but I haven't found a Windows program that holds a candle to Proxomitron. Real gem. Did the programmer ever release the source?

I used to frequent Tom's years ago when they where only linked at sysdoc.pair.com and you got unique and relatively dependable reviews. Just not worth my time for hardware reviews. Either they've spread themselves to thin or gotten addicted to the money. Ho-hum.

Replayability I can't quite speak too as I've only gone through about half dozen exercises/minigames. But I think it'll be fun from time to time, especially with the chapter selection mentioned above. I am currently viewing this as meditation time. You have to "get excited" to increase your heart rate for some of the minigames, so it's more than just solemn relaxation with rhythmic breathing. Very yogic.

The book says you can play alone or with someone, and that towards the end it may be required to solve a puzzle? I'll have to double check that. Essentially, it says one person can wear two of the rings, and the other wear one. I can't quite imagine it though. For me this is a single player. Even having my wife comment on random things kinda distracts, but I guess that's sort of a part of playing -- better focus and recognition of internal states.

  15. Playing it as Fantasy game on Biofeedback Video Game · · Score: 3, Informative

I have been looking at this game over the past year or so and received it for Christmas. The biofeedback works well and I'm just beginning to learn to control the various elements. I've worked with sound-induced brain wave synchronization (anyone remember mindsync?) and this game reminds of some of those mental states.

The "new age" theme to me is more like playing a D&D game in the role of a wizard or cleric.

The graphics remind me of Myst -- highly rendered static scenes with motion captured "actors" and some CG decoration (waterfall, birds) and objects for biofeedback training exercises (floating balls, fire, pin-wheels...). Navigation is like watching a short movie as you progress from area to area.

I rather enjoy the music -- it fits the mood well. I'd classify it as Ambient.

I'm cheap and skeptical so the price is more than I'd want to pay without a trial (however that'd be achieved), but I am very satisfied with the product. The only two additions I'd like so far are 1) recording biofeedback input of what was being detected by the sensors, and 2) ability to quickly jump from exercise to exercise instead of navigating the game-space. I look forward to exploring the project on source forge posted above. Thanks for the link!
