Ubuntu Edgy works very well on a 750MHz Athlon. I use one with 640mb ram occasionally. It even runs Windows XP inside VMWare Server usably.

Don't bother installing a modern Linux on a machine 500MHz, though. I've tried it many times as recently as November (a few weeks after Edgy was released) on a few PIII 450MHz machines with 384mb-512mb ram (Dell Optiplex GX-1). It's barely usable.

I disagree with an age tag. Who's to say what's appropriate for a 12 year old or a 17 year old?

What I'd like to see is something similar to PICS. There are different categories. For example (from ICRA):

languagesexual, languageprofanity, languagemildexpletives, nuditygraphic, nuditymalegraphic, nudityfemalegraphic, nuditytopless, nuditybottoms, nuditysexualacts, nudityobscuredsexualacts, nuditysexualtouching, nuditykissing, nudityartistic, nudityeducational, nuditymedical, drugstobacco, drugsalcohol, drugsuse, gambling, weaponuse, intolerance, badexample, pgmaterial, violencerape, violencetohumans, violencetoanimals, violencetofantasy, violencekillinghumans, violencekillinganimals, violencekillingfantasy, violenceinjuryhumans, violenceinjuryanimals, violenceinjuryfantasy, violenceartisitic, violenceeducational, violencemedical, violencesports, violenceobjects

What could then be done is have the client (ie, the TV) have preconfigured settings based on the above ratings. Similar to G, PG, PG-13, R, NC-17, etc. However, the user would also be able to customize the settings to however they wish. That's the important difference. Ie, if they believe that "nuditysexualacts" and is fine for their 13 year old but not "violencerape", they could configure it that way.

This may or may not impact you but I also factor in add-ons such as anti virus I don't use it. Even on Windows. If you use common sense and a user-level account it's not that important. If you're the kind of person to search warez and porn sites and download random "FREE!!!!!" screensavers, cursors, and other programs then yeah, it's required (and still not very effective).

office suites With OS X you'd still have to pay for one. I use OpenOffice on Linux and Windows and NeoOffice/J on OS X. If I wanted to run MS Office there is still Crossover, so I can run it.

*AND* my time. Linux loses for me since I do not want to spend the time to fiddle with it My time is also valuable. This is why I like running Ubuntu. Including the install time, I have a usable desktop with all the software I use and configured to my tastes in about 45 minutes.

When I factor all then in I think Apple was my best, least expensive purchase overall. Apple hardware and software rocks. I love using my PowerBook. I just wish they'd make midrange systems that were expandable. I don't expect them to compete with the $300 PoS machines out there, but something around $1000 that can be expanded would be awesome.

    Cost?

I heavily use a 12" PowerBook which dual boots with OS X Tiger and Ubuntu Edgy Eft. It's great, often I use OS X heavily and am very happy with it. But the thing cost me $1500 when I bought it a year and a half ago.

I've been wanting to buy a new desktop, but the options are limited. I could get a Mini, but you can't expand it. I don't want to have to clutter up my desk with multiple external drives and audio interfaces (I do audio editing in my spare time, so I need lots of storage and good audio interfaces). The only option for something expandable is a Mac Pro, which is ~$2000.

Instead I built a Core 2 Duo E6600 based machine with a ASUS P5B Deluxe, two 320GB sata drives, 2GB DDR2 800 ram, M-Audio Delta 1010LT sound, etc for $1100. It's now running Ubuntu Edgy Eft and works perfectly.

If Apple would sell some midrange machines that were expandable I would of bought a Mac for that instead.

That annoys the hell out of me as well. Sometimes my window will jump across the screen and be halfway off the screen, and no matter what I do to try and move it, it keeps popping back in that position. Closing that window and starting the session over again seems to be the only fix.

One other "bug" I'd love to see fixed under Linux and OS X would be to fix the form controls. As it is, on any version of Windows they look native. Under Linux and OS X, though, all controls look like copies of the controls in Windows 95. Camino under OS X has native-looking controls, so it can't be too difficult to fix.

Personally, for both of these bugs I'd be willing to donate for. Especially the second one as I'm primarily a Linux user.

I'm aware of both suggestions. Creating a partition (and drive letter) is a hack. What you mention is an improvement, but it's not as elegant as a swap partition.

The swap partition would have a drive letter, and would probably confuse the heck out of non-technical folks. It's not like it'd have to be visible to the user. It's possible to have hidden partitions in Windows. For example, Windows Disk Protection (part of the Shared Computer Toolkit) keeps it's data in a hidden second partition.

Also, in Windows 2000+ (unsure about NT4) it's possible to mount a partition into a folder. So, it's not like a drive letter is a requirement.

It would hurt the GPL as much as anything else that's copyrighted. If that happened, Microsoft, for example, could take the source to Linux and release it as a their new OS. Sure, there wouldn't be anything stopping you from copying it freely, but it'd still be binary only. They'd still be building off of your work and not giving anything back.

What's cool about the GPL is that it gives everyone access to the source code. If you make changes, your changes must also be available to everyone under the GPL. Everyone is given the same freedom.

I personally like JAP, though it only does WWW. The servers are in Germany, go to google.com and you get "Google Deutschland". It's the easiest of the three. Tor makes you set up something like Privoxy, not sure about I2P. For JAP, just start it (it's in Java and runs on Linux, OS X, and Windows) and point your browser's proxy settings to localhost:4001.

Tor has the advantage of letting you route anything through it. If you use it, don't be an asshole by using it for Bittorrent or anything else high bandwidth or illegal.

I personally like using JAP when at public access points, though for anything other than casual browsing I use OpenVPN and browse through my home network.

You don't need the restore disks. If it's Windows ME, all you need is a Windows ME CD. Just download it from somewhere. On the side of the computer is a product key, just type it in while doing the install.

Hell, the install files are probably in "c:\windows\options\cabs". Zip it up and copy it somewhere, make a DOS boot floppy, reboot into a Linux live CD, create a fat32 file system with parted (it does the best job, don't use mkfs.vfat), extract the files back to "c:\windows\options\cabs", reboot into DOS using the floppy, and run setup.exe in "c:\windows\options\cabs".

If it's XP, all you need is an XP Home OEM cd or an XP Pro OEM cd. It doesn't have to be a Dell, HP, etc CD. Just a normal OEM cd. Just use the product key on the side of the computer. The downside to that, though, is you'll have to call Microsoft to activate it.
