  1. This is not UN vrs. US ... on Should the UN Replace ICANN? · · Score: 2, Insightful

All this about who is better, US or UN is not relevant to the article. The question is who would be better handling domain names and IP address for the world. ICAAN or ITU? I believe ICAAN is doing a fine job. Why fix something that is not broke? ICAAN is not a department of the US Government, but ITU is a department of the UN Government. ICAAN is an internationally incorporated non-profit. If the UN takes over the role of ICAAN you can bet we would be removing domains and domain names from the private business world and putting it in the hands of governments around the world. I do not see how small dictatorships or China running all the domains for there assigned nation could possibly help progress free thought exchange now being used on the Internet. Example: All China IP's will start with 86.10 (Beijing) (using phone codes). Then the China government can stop any domain from its government run/regulated ISP's from allowing any non- China approved country code. What we will have is huge communication blockades. Why is this good ????? Please explain???

SBC/ATT ATTWS/Cingular has been transitioning to this model for years. SBC is the parent company of Cingular. This is the reason for the double merger. SBC would like to be a one-stop telecommunications place. 3G (3rd Generation) and 4G (4th Generation) models are to use your cell phone at home while your phone connects to a home station and receives calls transmitted over a broadband (VOIP). On both home and work I use Gnome (ga-nome) Sun is making an aggressive move here to directly compete with Linux. They have a superiour product to Linux and probably see a very short window for them to act. I think its genius of them to do this. Under there CDDL the technology is Open Sourced and Copywrite at the same time. It prevents other OS's (competitors) from using it and gives an effective medium for OpenSource software to be used commercially (You can use the SourseCode and if you do not change it you can add software and re-distro it w/o giving back to the community). In the long run any commercial IT department should look to Sun as an alternitive to Linux or Windows as a desktop solution. As it is already ready for such a move (unlike Linux see IBM artical above). And Sun will continue to make Software it can sell for its open OS, it will make money selling support for its open OS, and for the 1st time might become the mainstream OS. Something Linux, Mac, BSD has failed to do. I think this CDDL is a smart move not only for Sun but for *NIX in general.

In 5 years IBM code (and any other giant who joins them) will be in almost every distro and software databases, Office suites, and many many other programs. IBM code and Linux could be inseparable. It will help develop Linux software that is inexpensive to remove MS from its extortion ring it has going now. And prevent other companies from trying to not share code. I am a Network Engineer in the NOC for ATT/Cingular. Anyone can say what he or she want about former ATT Wireless coverage, customer service, or lack of good phones. But they are leading the industry in future Technologies. They are promoting the UMA. Why? The plan: You take your cell phone with you while you are traveling using UMTS high frequency bandwidth (GPRS has limitations but will be around for many years still for backward compatibility) When you get home you switch to your local area network voip. Your Cell phone becomes your home phone. When you are at work your cell phone switches to your corporate network. Your cell phone becomes your work phone. Also via Bluetooth Your cell phone is your modem to your laptop / or even PC. This technology is not going to remove Cell phone service ... it will expand the use of your Cell phone. This is not something ATT and now Cingular is fighting it is something they are leading in the development of. GPRS/GPS (Now UMTS) Technology is the world open standard. Sprint and Verizon still use proprietary technology that will have a difficult time migrating to what is called 3G or 3rd Generation (or 4G) phones. This is the future with UMTS bandwidth already in 4 markets (Seattle is one of them) faster then DSL. I kept this as non-technical as possible (1st post)
