Not bad points, although it relates more to personal use than to corporate server use. One of the reasons that I don't use linux at home is having to hunt down and often pay quite a bit for expensive documentation. Hopefully as *nix moves forward applications will begin to evolve with better GUIs. I can usually figure out how to do something by just screwing around with it in the gui and occasionally look at a help file, with command lines I actually have to sit down and read up on the subject. Then again, any time I begin to learn much of anything about a windows app I find out I enjoy it and buy books to find new things to do with it. (A simple example is my stack of Photoshop books... and none of them came cheap). Books are just a big part of computing in general, I guess.

No decent web browsers is another reason I rarely use linux. Netscape blows ass in any OS out there. Opera is cool, but not all that friendly to neophytes.

Like it or not, IE 5 is probably one of the best web browsers out there. It is still a big bloated mess tho.

Hopefully if enough people BUY Opera for linux, at some point it will really go from a great web browser to a great web browser that anyone can just start using as intuitively as he would use IE 5.

  8. About time! on New Desktop for Linux · · Score: 1

One of the reasons I don't use linux very much is that it lacks the ease of use I need in a desktop system. Sure I can install a dozen different utilities and end up with something that is almost as easy to use as Windows or a Mac, and keep up with the updates to those programs, but it is far more efficient to just run Windows, especially now that Windows 2000 has created a much more reliable (In relation to Windows anyway, it still sucks compared to Linux for reliability) desktop OS. If someone could get me a linux distro where EVERYTHING, especially driver installs and file management were as easy as they are in Windows, Linux would become my primary OS on my non-gaming machines right then and there. And if someone knows of such a distro, please let me know!

This is not a democracy, it is a republic. Politicians call it a democracy over and over again to make you think it is, so that you will be more likely to assume that their decisions are the will of the people, and not the will of the people who paid to get them in office.

and you do NOT own the government. They own YOU. They have the right to imprison, torture, kill, slander, and do ANYTHING ELSE to you that they want to. Just check out the case of Mumia Abu- Jamal for obvious proof. And don't forget that congress investigated FBI involvement into the death of Martin Luther King, Jr.. While they said that there was no evidence that the FBI had anything to do with his muder, they did threaten to reveal damning information about him and his family if he did not commit suicide, in response to King's protest of the vietnam war.

If you really look deeply, there is NO GOVERNMENT. Do you think that M$ would be under investigation for Antitrust if Sun and Netscape had each been spending more lobbying the feds than M$ had before the investigation started? Do you think that Mumia Abu-Jamal would be on death row if the Fraternal Order of Police had less lobbying money than Amnesty international? Would the government continue spending billions on a drug war proven to be failing if it were not for the money that the prison industry pumps into campaign funds?

You have no government. You have no freedom unless someone with much more money than you lets you. Don't ever think you are anything more than a slave who can be forced to do anything if someone wants you to do it enough.

It doesn't help that he was going on with paranoid rants about conspiracies against him for a while, although I don'y know if he still does this, as I stopped readinghis site months ago.

If /. is going to post about hardware sites, post about anandtech more often. Anand and his buddies know more about computers than Tom ever could, they write better, are more objective, and although they have a ton of ads, they have less than Tom.

When I was in dare all the propaganda we saw in dare was of hard core ghetto junkies using and selling drugs, and of dirty old men trying to molest little kids by drawing them into the house with sweets or a kitten. We never heard about alcoholics, familial sex/child abuse, or the happy suburban couple that smokes a joint after they put their kids to bed because is spices up sex a little. Truth is propaganda like this is nothing BUT teaching ignorance, and teaching kids these things young doesn't help them respect the government or the public schools when they grow up and learn the truth about life.
