  1. Re:Electrickery next on City-Provided Wi-Fi Rejected Over "Health Concerns" · · Score: 1

The irony of this is it's Sebastopol. Home of O'Reilly. I've lived here for over 25 years, and I was COMPLETELY blown away by this. I mean it is far from a town full of tin hats. And it's not even the strangest town in Sonoma County either - many of the other cities have bans on smoking in public places for example - any public place. This decision will get changed, but it was so strange for it to happen in the first place.

  2. UI as a standard vs. a preference on Office 12 Exposed · · Score: 1

The web is heading towards less 'standardized' UI with the benefit of technologies like RSS and CSS. The belief that there is one way to display information held with print, and while it offers a logical place for things to some inexperienced users, it's static nature is yielding to customizable interfaces that are suited for specific purposes and users. Software has been following slowly with 'customizable' toolbars, but still lacks the flexibility that anyone other than a basic user would benefit from. It is time that software be more than skinnable.

  3. we'll continue with the prior player on Flash Developers Fear Spectre of Spyware · · Score: 5, Interesting

flash is a big player in elearning, and there aren't a lot of tools that can be used at the skillset that many content developers have. We'll just continue, and have our clients use a specific non-ad based version. Macromedia has done a lot to extend the web for a lot of good reasons. They've had some tough times lately, and I think that they really must have struggled with this before selling out.

  4. This replaces the fuel tax - SUV's get off CHEAP on California Wants GPS Tracking Device in Every Car · · Score: 1

The idea here (I'm a california resident) is that someone that drives 100 miles in a 10 mile to the gallon SUV will pay the same as someone driving a hybrid thats getting 50 miles to the same gallon of gas. The intention is to make up for lost revenues as cars become more fuel efficient. So penalize the people that drive energy efficient vehicles. And give BIG SUV drivers a tax break... what a great idea. Anyone have a place to hide?

  5. Commodities like power, WiFi... on Mobile Users Plug-in Anywhere They Can · · Score: 1

Power, wifi acess, etc... seem like (eventually) would become commodities, part of the COGS of retail. I imagine that at one time the same was said of toilet paper. Starbucks made an issue of the toilet paper that they supply being of recycled materials, etc. And Like the guy in Wisconsin, they saw the value to the customer of having these things available to them for free. When you look at actual costs of things like wifi, or power access, etc., it makes pretty good business sense to absorb these things as a means of attracting customres to buy their ACTUAL products. Can you imagine Starbucks having a quarter machine on their restrooms? I think not. Many hotel chains have started offering wifi, and they are certainly getting guests as a result of it.
