  1. Re:Right... on AOL: We're Not Spying on AIM Users · · Score: 0, Flamebait

It's okay for the US to have WMDs. But if you want to have them we reserve the right to invade you....We're no evil. We promise. Trust us. Just because we say we can doesn't mean we will.

-Sorry about the politics you just reminded me of the Bush admin.-

Now onto the topic at hand....
I never really liked AIM, and this was the final straw, uninstalled it and went to different services. Do you know what this is like?

    This is like tapping phones

If I may make an analogy for a second here because I see a parallel between normal communication and internet communitcation. When you send an email it's like sending a letter. If you post of a public message board, you are in essence entering a public discussion. And when you talk over IM it's not really to different from talking on the phone.

Now can you imagine if the phone companies came out with a statement saying they reserve the right to monitor your phone conversations and use them as they see fit? There would be a public outcry. If say to AIM, make the agreement more understandable and less shadey then I'll consider coming back to you.

Why are you joining the Marines? If you think you're 'different' and 'very smart', then you're probably going to have a very difficult 4+ years....

I'm not all that different and I'm not even going to say I'm smart. As for why I'm going into the Marines? There's alot of reasons.

One, I think it will be good for me. I'm a high school senior, varsity soccer player, and all and all what you would call a computer nerd. I'm not that strong physically, nor do I pretend to know my way around firearms. When I'm in the Marines I have a feeling that will change.

Two, they're paying for my college. I'm a reservist for 4 years and then active duty for the next for. While in the reserves the Marines will pay for me to go to college (I've been accepted into Carnegie Mellon and Case Western but I haven't chosen yet).

Thrid? Because for 18 years of my life I really haven't done anything to protect the freedom that I'm lucky enough to have. Throughout history fellow Americans have sacrificed and even given their lives to protect this country. I felt it was my time to do something.

Think about it. D&D attracts imaginitive players who are able to think for themselves. Now does that seem like people you want in your Army? I ship out to Marine boot camp Aug. 1st and people have told me over and over again that when I get there...I shouldn't stand out. D&D players are different...and normally very smart. In an army you want drones who can think for themselves but will never question orders. Why do you think the great dictators killed teachers???

The resume's for our top leaders look something like this: George W. Bush: Served one term as the THIRD most powerful man in Texas politics and his dad was president..............elected president Dick Cheney: Former CEO and adviser during the NIXION years......elected vice president Personally I'd think these two are alittle more of a worry than them letting the a spyware guru into office. You're not going to change the minds of your politicans, how about you smack the hell out of the people who voted for Bush????? If 50% of the people think he's qualified to be president than I'm willing to bet that we have bigger problems than who he's appointing.

  9. The reason they try to get around popup blockers on The Return Of The Pop-Up Ad · · Score: 1

Many people have noted here that it doesn't make sense for them to get around popup blockers because people who have them installed obviously don't want to see popups. That's not always the case. Who do you think popup's were targeting? Anyone who's clicked on a "free trip to vegas" or a "there's a virus on your computer" ad proablly wasn't too computer savvy. I'm willing to bet they didn't even have much common sense. Atleast not enough to knowingly install a popup blocker. Many companies and schools have them installed by default. SP2 came with a built-in popup blocker for IE. So the result has been alot of people having popup's blocked without them knowning what happened. Those are the people the advertisers are targeting.
