"they are simply super-human awesome (closed source) progamming experts (like Bill Gates and Steve Ballmer). " Bill Gates and Steve Ballmer are not programmers of any kind at all - let alone 'super-human'.
From the article, "...Portability,reliability, extensibility, compatibility, performance."
Portability - what does NT run on these days? I'd like to see them port 30 million + lines. Reliability - as a relative measure (VMS, Unixes, etc.) - failed. Extensibility - up to 30 million lines of code and counting.... Compatability - how many file systems does it know? Compatable with MSDOS, apparently. Performance - Ask c't magazine or check out Mathematica, bovine, SETI, or rc5 stats. Thats five clear strikes. Good thing they didn't include security as one of their goals.
It would seem these gentlemen showed up at a baseball game with bowling balls. They must work for microsoft...
Doesn't the Smithsonian have sections where they showcase other oddities and/or notable failiures?
And still sell the OS that shows up on the radar as the universal worst? (Win98). Even if you want to talk about NT, its still poor on the everyday server task list.
I predict that Jim Henson will come back from the dead in the form of Godzilla with the head of Richard Nixon to destroy Disney in response to this profane development.
Perhaps we are seeing the result of a generation exposed as children to commercial advertising. It seems that independant critical thought is at an all-time low for the so-called information age.
What contractual obligations? I was under the impression that motorola disc'd the Starmax because of apple's license bomb - the program wasen't around long enough to show a clear profit/loss performance history.
Why are people attributing performance gains in the G4 to Apple? Altivec was Motorola's contribution.
Apple's contribution is being the biggest customer for the Altivec version of the G4. Giving Apple all this attention is in my opinion quite out of order.
I'm much more interested in whether or not an Altivec G4 can run one of the new IBM-spec NON-Apple mother boards that are starting to show up, and how well linux might do on such a system.
Apple is doing the exact thing almost every other big corporation does, which is to work very hard to market a product. I think Steve Jobs gets credit for putting Apple back in black, not the G4 Altivec technology.
What I have heard from most people who I would not think of as in-depth computer enthusiasts, geeks, nerds, or the like, is that Bill Gates came off looking like a sociopathic theif, and Steve Jobs a big jerk.

"For Linux to succeed," It is succeeding.

Anything that dumps on msoft is probably good, even if it is apple. Wonder how long their mac will hold up....

Marketing is the root of all confusion.

I didn't watch the movie, myself.
Cool....
I do not want to have a conversation with a computer.
