  1. Re:Looking before I leap on Applications Service Providers May Change Your Life · · Score: 2

My company has outgrown Quickbooks. In light of that, we have been investigating several Application Service Providers for potential financial service candidacy. The big debate has been to use an ASP for accounting services or purchase a reputable software package, a server to run it on and keep it in-house. The final verdict: the latter, and here's why:

    Small to mid-size biz
Several of the ASP's I researched and spoke with advertise that they specialize in solutions for the small to mid-size biz. Dell defines a small to mid-size business as a company with = 10 concurrent users. For a biz that cannot afford a $20,000USD accounting package, I can hardly see how that same biz can swing the cost for an ASP (see below)

    Cost
For a 15 install/user-base (their minimum requirement) Corio charges approximately $13,000USD per month for software, hardware, bandwidth and technical support for financial services. PeopleSoft is used as the backend and I do understand that PS isn't exactly $15 shareware from Tucows, but $13K is a lot of money, regardless.

I realize that the Application Service Provider market, as it is defined these days, is a relatively new field of service. However, the cost is excessive, the requirements haven't been as accurate as they appear and all of this causes the people that could benefit the most, to be shut out.

It's an excellent idea, but the market needs more competition. Lower the prices and scale to what you advertise.

Before you upgrade your Palm to PalmOS 3.3, be sure to check here and the websites of your software vendors to make sure that what's working today, will be working tomorrow and the next day (particularly TRG apps) ... Many vendors that make the more popular and enterprise level apps have updated their software because of problems created by the new OS. Then, there are vendors that aren't effected by this change.

Regardless, double check. Once you've upgraded the OS, there's no turning back.

  3. Re:Handspring Visor on PalmOS 3.3 Released · · Score: 2

No, it can't. HandSpring did not put the OS on a flashable area of the device. Thus, there are no full upgrades to the OS. The only possiblity of OS enhancements would be like what Palm did for PalmOS 3.1.1. It was an update, not an upgrade. It exists on the device like an application and yes, it could be deleted just like an application.

I would imagine that it's the jail time (less time served) that would actually be the "punishment". Even in the smallest of tech companies these days, the guys in charge take home > $150,000. Now, multiply that by the hundreds of millions that a large company makes in a year. Sure, a million dollars (in any country) is a lot of money, but when you make more than that in a year, it boils down to a minor annoyance in your style of living.

I'd like to point out that C$1 million is more like US$681 thousand (US$ > C$).

I'd prefer to see hacking winked at, but actual damage responded to in a proportionate matter.

I have a close contact in the Computer Crimes division in the Atlanta, GA FBI office. She has explained to me that the FBI (at least the GA office) has been focusing a considerable amount of attention on the small-time hackers. The script kiddies.

Unfortunately, the FBI is unwilling to assist in a reported incident unless they "hacker" (and I use that term loosely) damaged a system/network or stole confidential information.

    It's a step.

    Two words: Baby Bell

Is everyone that works directly or indirectly at Microsoft tainted with the same monopolizing attitudes as those that have created the monopoly? I have to say 'no'. In every poorly managed, back-stabbing company, there is always someone, who could move up into the executive level, that doesn't have the same agandas which caused this mess in the first place.

With that in mind, the forced breakup of Microsoft could allows those people to "step up to the plate" and possibly change the monopoly and win by having a better product.

Microsoft is, itself, dead. Baby Microsofts could prove to be stellar company which produces an excellent product.

AvantGo has a wonderful section desined for palm content builders. This area provides all the information required to do graphics, layout and forms.

I use it for specific data on my company's intranet. All of the exec's and a handful of developers have a Palm device -- being the IT manager, it's so simple to distribute updated information.

    <editorial>
I read people complaining about the display and about the memory -- let's keep in mind that the Palm device is a PDA, not a PHED (Personal Home Entertainment Device). Yeah, it would be very cool if I could control my car gadgets with my Palm Vx (which has been done), but that wasn't the intent of the device.

  9. Payment methods on Open Source E-commerce Engine Announced · · Score: 2

I'm curious to know the extent of any payments methods that may be implemented into the system. Now would be a perfect time to look into the open specifications for OFX. OFX is still relatively new, but it's XML-style approach to secure financial exchanges would be an excellent approach toward lowering the costs of the more "difficult" areas of e-commerce.
