"Reaching for the popcorn"? I think you misspelled "Reaching for the lifeboats because if the US falls so will the entire fucking world."

In other news, Galileo has been exhumed and re-animated (with wires and stuff) to publically recant his belief that the Earth orbits around Sol.. in truth, it's America that the rest of the world revolves around; specifically, the state of Utah.

Exactly. However, I'd point out it's not merely custody he's been enjoying at the pleasure of the 'American people'; kind Uncle Sam laid on a full spread of psychological torture for the man who pointed out the Emperor's saggy bottom cheeks behind the 'cloth of finest gold'. He's suffering even now, as we post on the innertubes.

Ahh, America, land of the free.

Note: I don't think my little shit-splat country is any better - of course, New Zealand doesn't trumpet and parade itself as a bastion of freedom like the US of A does..

From reading Alex Belits' response I'm not going to be popular when I say I largely agree with your summary. I would however add what we tend to discuss is Humanity's highly-visible behaviour, which is not representative of the species as a whole. Obviously, meditating monks don't get Press like suicide bombers do.

What is missing is a sense of community such as we have with our families. Military gung-ho types might enjoy killing enemy combatants but it's pretty obvious they wouldn't enjoy killing their own family or community members in the same way: it would be unthinkable.

If we want to put an end to violence as a way of resolving conflict, we must ensure that our children are educated to consider one another as part of their own extended family.

Our Homo Sapiens Sapiens-level suspicion of Others has assisted our survival in the past; now, many thousands of years later this same trait is the greatest threat to our survival.

People do not abuse political power because they are inhuman: quite the contrary.

    Very well said.

It's interesting when an individual's humanity is questioned in response to their heinous actions.. such as a comment I heard spoken to a reporter who was garnering local feelings on the Egyptian Christian church bombing that happened recently.

The woman being interviewed said something to the effect that '[the terrorist bombers] aren't human, they're just animals'.

Although I wouldn't say our species is worthless, personally I find it a bit shameful that we (still) collectively consider ourselves superior to the other lifeforms on this planet.

Are those the best case numbers or worst case? OCZ has a history of claiming huge numbers and terribly under-delivering. Oh, and at least for my use case MLC is a non-starter so the only OCZ card I'd be interest in is the Z-Drive e88 R2 which is ~$10k so 30% more for a two card solution (RAID1) and I only need ~120GB for the OLTP tables.

Here's another data point that agrees with you: I recently specc'd a machine for a client with a Core i7, 12GB RAM etc., including an OCZ RevoDrive. This machine is a massive beast, easily the most powerful I've worked with, yet it doesn't feel noticably faster than a machine equipped with a simple SSD such as one of Intel's offerings or even an OCZ Vertex2.

My experience with OCZ mirrors yours exactly; all mouth and no trousers. The reviews of the product don't help much because although the numbers look great, I find the devices don't get anywhere near the claimed performance by either manufacturer or the reviewer.

I'm fully prepared to accept that I might be doing something wrong but I've followed the usual block-alignment procedures etc. and have probably seen about a dozen of these things in the last year. As I understand it Windows 7 performs this alignment itself when conducting a fresh install.
