  1. Finally a good reason... on Internet2 Going Live · · Score: 1

...for being at Yale. :) I *know* we're on Internet2.

  2. "chaos manor" UGH! on 2 Scoops of Quickies · · Score: 1

Blah. Horrible web site! I couldn't find anything on it. And people sent him money? What the hell for, it's utter crap. That site is enough to make you dyslexic.

He's one of those people who thinks that he gets instant credibility because he's published stuff in mainstream press (i.e. books). Remind anyone of a certain other slashdot irregular? ;)

BTW he does write decent SF (and I'm quite picky about SF). Check out his Mote series...quite decent. Lucifer's Hammer is ok too, if a bit pulpy. Footfall is also a good read.

  3. Ugh this is no way to go about things on The Road to Linux: The Descent (Part One) · · Score: 1

Jon, why another long winded article which basically says "I didn't get around to doing it" ? If you spent half as much time actually *trying* to install, instead of reading a million books about the subject, you'd already be running Linux.

Why do you make it sound that installing Linux is the most complicated thing ever invented? For God's sake I installed RedHat 4.2 for a friend of mine based on the README alone. Mind you, I'd previously installed FreeBSD on my own computer, so I wasn't a newbie at it. Buy a cheap computer, get a Linux CD, install it. It's NOT that hard.

Honestly, you're just psyching yourself out. *sigh*

  4. Phrase of the Day: Fact Checking on NYT covers WINE · · Score: 1

Ugh, this was so full of errors. Did they even bother to visit the wine homepage, or did they look at the name "wine" and say...well the "win" part must be windows, and the e, well hell that's emulator gosh darn it. Wine is not an emulator. :)

On another note, I have wine installed on my FBSD system...but have yet to get StarCraft to run. Anyone tried this? What options/switches do you give wine in order to get it to run? I wish that on the page where it shows compatibility it also showed HOW it was run.

  5. I didn't like it myself on "Pi" is out on VHS and DVD · · Score: 1

Ya, geek factor was high in pi. Gotta love the grungy decorum. I found the movie confused...the mysticism was pretty sketchy. It was kind of like an X-files episode really. Know the saddest part? Him listening to his next door neighbour have sex. This is NOT something anyone should aspire to. :)

  6. How about perspective? on PC style as important as Clock Speed · · Score: 1

It never ceases to amaze me how many of the people who read /. are completely unable to understand the thinking processes of the common computer user.

Of *course* people who read /. regularly care more about what's inside than outside, but the VAST majority of people are HIGHLY clueless about this sort of stuff. They get confused about ROM and RAM for Pete's sake. All they want is to be able to run MS Office and some games and some educational stuff for their kids. Does it surprise you that these people care about what color their computer is as much as what CPU it uses?

The fact that aesthetics are so important leads me to believe that bringing Linux and other Open Source software to the masses will require bringing it to the clueless, and not the other way around (as many people would like to think).
