I guess the whole thing about the dangers of this thing comes from the well known fact that if you step into the break while driving a normal car, you'll just stop and you're more or less save.
If you decrease the speed of a plane to much you'll stop too, but you'll tumble down and be more or less dead...
I can't imagine that this is going to work in a sane way.
Even in "professional" aviation navigating via GPS is only a BACKUP system, not the regular case. Still flying via VORs, NDBs and ISECs is essential.
How should Mr. John Doe learn when to go around, or what to do in very bad weather conditions.. How are they going to keep the civil and this "private" aviation apart?
How is Mr. John Doe going to pay for thes "driving/flying" licence (which won't be cheap, I'm sure)?
How can we decide who is allowed to fly, how can we be sure he is not going to insure/kill others?
Don't you think that with everybody and his brother/mother/etc using this system an reasonable amount of chaos is going to arise?

I'm sorry to speak a bit against the spirit of this discussion, but I'm a webdesigner and this is going to cause havoc in my Industry.
I thought that we were ready to drop netscape/gecko/mozilla in favor of IE just to make things easier nad cheaper for the designer/customer.
I know you'll hate me for this, but IE IS the best browser. It'S a very fast and spiffy piece of software (Yes, ok, it's insecure).
If we just had it under Linux it would definitely dominate everything.
Coding for this browser (CSS, Javascript) is very simple and efficient.
So, what happens now? AOL jumps in, basically stabs us in the back and merely evens out the browser market. That my friends is just not right.
It's going to make things more exensive for our customers, it's going to take more time from our tight schedule, it will bring down our efficiency since we have to code it all twice.
See, I'm huge Linux fan, but I say that the browser war is over. It died when AOL bougt NS. This brought it down completely, the war is over, IE won.
Now AOL wants it again. Nice. Thank you.
This guy deserves to get public attention. Nice job! Please don't moderate down this posting too much ( I know it's slighty OT, but it's a good example), I'm just trying to push the community a bit forward;)
Maybe setting up a/. Presskit for each article would help...
Some details, in my opinon a Presskit should be published when a thread is closed. It should consist of the article itself, an overview of the links used in it, and all Informative/Interesting/etc. comments with a threshhold greater than 3.
It could be called the "Voice of the/. Community" or such..
I'm sure that some newspapers would be interested in publishing comments approved by the mass moderation system...

If you want to change something, donate food and donate money, but don't bitch about it in the wrong places.

Hmm I think you're just going the "American way" For Example, here in Europe ISDN is something really great.. we are using the ATM network technology, a really intelligent network switching/routing protocoll...
In the states you just waited for a year or two and now you have that bigass OC lines for your voice over IP needs... With SMS it's going to be the same quality-quantity situation... (But I have no idea what you are going to use to outperform our SMS;))
but it seems to me that the states are pretty retarded when it comes to SMS and digital mobile telephony...
Here in Austria (Yes that's the little spot in Europe...) we use SMS for our daily needs... There are 7 million inhabitants in my little country and the number of SMS sent per day exceeds 8 millions, we basically use them for everything, like getting Slashdot news, as a beeper to wake up, for better marks at school (cheating via SMS is GREAT;))
So my 0.02 of opinion I want to share is that everybody should literally *BEAT* their cellphone providers to enable sending and receiving SMS to and from every network... It's really cool, SMS are like ICQ for your mobile;)
Can anyone tell me why Dimensonal Media is not on the comdex's exhibitors lists? Their website is not working (www.dimensionalmedia.com is under construction).
I never trust articles without pictures, links or anything that makes them different from a commercial presentation...
Microsoft and a Remote Desktop? I guess that is something like "Back Orifice 2k included!"

I don't want to know what happens if someone looks how far up one of those SATS planes can go. Talk about tourism in space ;)

Yes, I do know how hard it is, I noticed while reading your posting.
